The theme of this one is Angry Old Guys! Between Yangil and Ajakae, there’s a couple of majorly pissed-off dads right there. And both well played.
Pretty straightforward episode; we knew we would get a battle and we got it. It was extremely well done. Chaotic to try to follow, especially in the nighttime, but exactly what it would be like. Good stunt work too. The only issue was a little too much phony lighting. Again with my complaint about that, I know...It isn’t so much that there’s extra lighting, it’s that they don’t yellow-tint it to look like it’s coming from fires and torches. It’s obviously the pure white tint of massive location lights that production companies use. But it’s wasn’t a big deal-—nowhere near the problem it was in EOTS, for instance-—and it didn’t detract more than a bit from both of the battle scenes. Terrific stuff.
Oh and they did pull out some of the old music with too much tympani. But that probably doesn’t bother anybody else so ignore me.
“Hasty action can lead to yet another upset. Let us remain still until the rest of our troops arrive.” Yangil said that? Suddenly he’s an oracle of wisdom. Of course that lasted for about five seconds!
Geez they brought in the A-list hairdressers for the women, didn’t they. But good stuff written once again for them. Legitimately suspenseful; you really did not know what would happen to Mihyang. And it sets up a great angle now, going forward. Let’s face it, Jongkahn is in a heap of trouble if Goongyae finds out about this.
“I’m told your son is being kept somewhere in Myungju.” There’s some news right there.
“Looking for him?” Well that was darned funny! Who would have expected such a big laugh right in the middle of a decisive battle. And Park Sulhee was the best possible person to hold up the head, with that crazy-looking smile of his. I don’t ever remember a battle scene with such a big laugh in the middle of it. Not in any other historical we’ve done here. Just another piece of evidence of the talent behind this series. Well done.
The complicated feelings Goongyae has had towards this whole situation, it’s all been very well written and makes the story more interesting. In the end I was shocked that Yangil kneeled before him. You expected him to charge like a warrior and have to be struck down. Makes a heck of an ending; sure am eager to see what happens next.
