QUICK SUMMARY
The magistrate’s compound has fallen into terrifying chaos. People are running for their lives and zombies are seemingly everywhere, gorging on the bodies of those who aren’t fast enough or lucky enough to get away. The magistrate Beom-pal and two of his men are lucky—at least temporarily. They lure the zombies into the jail and herd them into cells, and lock the doors behind them. It sort of works, but there are just so many, and they keep coming...and some of the prisoners in the cells don’t get out quickly enough...and one of Beom-pal’s men gets bitten and goes down.
The one bit of good news in all this is that Seo-bi is still alive, in the jail. Her cell his opened and she does get out, and then she saves herself and Beom-pal by picking up a sword and letting the bitten man—who’s gotten up and turned zombie astonishingly quickly—run full-speed into the tip of the sword as he charges her. It pierces his throat and apparently severs his spinal cord because he drops on the spot. Serendipity! Down the street, Yeong-sin manages to kill another one with a pitchfork to the head—interestingly it didn’t get near the spinal column but it worked. So apparently any kind of traumatic head injury does the job.
Now the zombies are spreading out into the surrounding countryside and attacking anyone they can get their teeth into. Which is bad news for the crown prince. Remember we left him next to a small lake looking across at the burning town. Well, now through the darkness he realizes that there must be fifty zombies running along the lakeshore, right towards him. He flees and gets help from just-in-time Mu-yeong, who’s shown up on horseback and is firing arrows that knock down the closest pursuers. They get away from all but two, and with a couple of perfect decapitations from the learned-it-the-hard-way prince (“You must aim for their heads,” he advises) they make their escape.
They reach a local military base, where the soldiers are quietly hiding inside and have barricaded the door and won’t let anyone in. Already dozens of citizens are there, begging for safety...but the soldiers suddenly appear on top of the base wall and actually fire arrows downwards to drive everyone away from the walls. And here come the zombies...so it’s more chaos and running. The prince and Mu-yeong run away, reach a rocky outcropping overlooking the lake...and yes it’s a cliff-dive. Not a tall one, but splash. A whole bunch of zombies dive in after them...but look at that, they’re sinking! What a surprising turn. The prince and Mu-yeong easily swim to safety.
Well here’s a pretty sight. As the queen and Cho Hak-ju look on, the king of Chosun is gorging himself on a young woman’s body. Isn’t that special? This, Cho says, is “what happens to a powerless king.” Huh? What the heck does that mean?
Back at the town, the chaos continues and Seo-bi and Beom-pal are now trapped in a prison cell with zombies all around them. But look: sunrise! The zombies flee for cover and hide themselves anywhere that’s dark. The chaos ends. Beom-pal and Seo-bi leave the jail and are greeted by the cowardly soldiers from the previous night, who have all emerged from their base. Now the obvious need is to round up all of the bodies and destroy them. But wait, a complication—relatives of the higher-class zombies are demanding that the bodies be preserved. “My precious son,” says the mother of the previous commander of the base, “is our family‘s only son for three generations.” Seriously? At that point crown prince shows up, takes charge, and respectfully but firmly orders that ALL of the bodies be destroyed, that survivors be evacuated from the area by boat, and that the entire region be quarantined.
Hanyang: The head of Sungkyundwan is talking to an official who’s a crony of Cho Hak-ju (but who’s uncomfortable with the recent mysterious events in the palace). We need to find out the truth, he says—and we need the help of Lord Ahn Hyeon. Apparently this Ahn person is VERY influential and could sway significant public opinion.
Beom-pal tries to thank Seo-bi for saving his life last night. And he’s even trying to flirt with her, clumsily but unmistakably. But Seo-bi is such a hardcore geek physician that she doesn’t pick up on it--because she’s too busy diagnosing him! This condition and that observation and somehow she concludes he has gonorrhea. Lucky him.
Unfortunately zombies somehow destroyed all of the available boats but one last night.. Ugh. So of course, the officials end up comandeering it and launch before the commoners can get wind of it, and the commoners are left abandoned at the deck as the boat sails away.
A sudden flashback to the disastrous night at Dr. Lee’s clinic. “It was not like this,” Lee says, as he and Seo-bi and Yeong-sin hide themselves. When Dan-i was bitten by the king, “he got sick for days and died as a human being.” Clearly something has changed, because now people get bitten and they turn zombie on the spot. But he says he can fix it, and he has all of the information recorded in his logs. But no he won’t fix it--because right then he falls and dies.
Flashback over, the crown prince and Seo-bi are studying the logs. The prince tells Mu-young that he now has just cause to act against Cho Hak-ju and the queen—having concluded that his father had died from something more conventional (he doesn’t say what) and that the pair had used a mysterious “resurrection plant” to keep him alive for their own power cravings. And we see a momentary flashback of the prince as a young boy, being told by his father, “You must stay alive.” He says he’ll travel to Sangju to see Lord Ahn Hyeon—again that name comes up. So he and Yeong-ju and Seo-bi head there on horseback.
As the boat travels on and the afternoon sun fades, some of the officials have second thoughts and wonder if they’re doing the right thing. But they’re beyond second-guessing now, aren’t they. And look who’s on board with them: the mother of that former army commander who we saw earlier. And she’s looking at a very large trunk that’s stored below and apparently belongs to her. You don’t suppose....
