What’s so funny? Everybody’s laughing, even Goongyae—tell us why! Ugh, not a good start.
Too much of this one was about the one-more-meeting that Yunhwa just had to have with WG. She had to have it...why? Because she thought what would be different? That THIS time she could get him to grow a pair? The die is cast and everything is in motion. You can’t help but feel sorry for Yunhwa, but dragging this out one more time served no useful purpose. She ended up crying on his shoulder, but what the heck, we admired her in previous episodes for coming to terms with everything—or so we thought, apparently not. They milked their meeting for emotion and it just felt like overkill at this point. I wanted to feel sad for them but I just couldn’t, because enough already.
And then he kisses her on the lips? Seriously? After all of that noble talk about how she’s the emperor’s woman now, he plants one on her? Good grief. At least he didn’t slip her the tongue! What a loyal subject. Sheesh.
“His majesty has sent us dowry, so we must return the courtesy.” Really? I thought a dowry was a one-way deal.
“Just imagine if Yunhwa gives birth to a son. There will be generations of glory in our family! Our grandson could become an emperor!” Yeah...no pressure, Yunhwa.
The best scene was WG’s private meeting with Goongyae. Once again we get some terrific character development; an unexpected look into Goongyae’s soul. Calling WG “the finest warrior in Goguryeo” is laughable...but seeing how he longs for some sort of family attachment, it does finally give us a good reason for his favoring WG so strongly. Obviously their meetings from when they were younger and his future was so uncertain made a big impression. Plus remember that he spoke so gratefully about WG’s father. Well done.
“We will live and die together as brothers.” Does this remind anybody of a similar scene? Early in DJY when Yeon Gaesomun was ill and got DJY to call him father. Same sort of thing.
On top of everything else, Yunhwa has nice penmanship too.
“He has an innate gift for magnetizing people to his side.” No he does not! Certainly not like Goongyae or Kyun Hwon. He’s daddy’s kid who inherited the top spot. And he’s done well enough that the people around him have come to respect him, but he certainly isn’t the charismatic alpha-male type that the other two are. This Jongkahn angle is kind of awkward...
...and speaking of which, I hope they don’t take it to unreasonable lengths. Those smug looks of satisfaction he had at the reception, thinking about how unhappy he’s made WG, this is right on the edge of getting childish and bullying. At least he’s not doing any evil laughs, thank goodness for that. And I did like Eunbu showing the flash of doubt and speaking well of WG, that was well-written because it said what we’re all thinking—that nobody else has any reason to doubt WG’s loyalty.
Beautifully staged scene of the reception. Looked fantastic—really, really good. But there certainly needs to be more to it than we were shown. Here’s your chair, go sit down, hey everybody you all serve her now. That’s it? Hope it continues into the next episode.
