Starting an episode by giving us the year number—they should make a national law in South Korea requiring every episode start that way! Extremely helpful.
“Could we defeat Goongyae’s army?” Seriously? They spent all that effort building WG up into the unique one enlightened by the amazing Secret Script...and the first we hear of him is asking a dumb question like that? Ugh.
There we go, the bird soaring, the scout running into the fortress...no more flashback status; we’re fully caught up to where episode 1 began. And most of this episode was repetition of things we already saw in the first episode, so there isn’t much new to add here. Certainly what we saw made more sense this time, having 20 episodes of backstory between then and now.
Enjoyed the battle scenes just as much as the first time...although there were a few momentary glimpses of “boulders” bouncing around like rubber balls and those should have been edited out. But the stunt work more than made up for it! Great job by those guys. Some big falls taken, and some dangerous sequences with soldiers climbing walls and falling off ladders with fire flying around them. Very impressive.
Looking at all of those wooden fortifications at the outer defense line, for once you can totally understand the use of flaming arrows. Made short work of it all. (I promise to get back to the topic of flaming arrows at some point.)
“Maitreya works through me, and I will lead you to eternal paradise!” Certainly we know Goongyae’s selfless intentions here...but the way he’s talking, it’s a little scary because people like Osama Bin Laden talk the same way. Taking advantage of religious fervor is a dangerous thing in the wrong hands.
The one brief narrated text:
Goongyae to Jongahn: “You’ve forgotten about the past...we owe them a debt of gratitude.” So there! Pyungdal was right.
Nice ending—even after the repetition in this episode, we jump right ahead into an interesting situation coming up with Goongyae’s envoys approaching Song-ak. So we press forward in real time now—flashbacks are over.

The one brief narrated text:
Goongyae—he conquered Chulwon and proclaimed himself the king. This was the second overthrow after Kyun-hwon created his own state in Mujinju. The year was 896 A.D - the tenth year of Queen Jinsung’s reign. 230 years after Kim Chunchu united the Three Koreas, the United Shilla was once again divided into the Later Three Koreas.Pyungdal: “Goongyae is indebted to you for what you have done for him in the past.” THANK you sir—why has nobody mentioned this before now? Everybody else belittled him for suggesting it, but there’s plenty of reason to think that Song-ak would get a great deal from Goongyae for that very reason.
