Terribly sorry for this being so late—things got away from me for a few days.
“The people are our masters—do not forget that.” I still keep looking for cracks in his altruism. Obviously he’s supremely ambitious but it’s not for ego or other personal reasons-—not at all what you’d expect from someone in his position. At least not yet. Fascinating character.
Three narrated texts; here’s the first:

And apparently our storyline, with Kyun Hwon going to see scholar Choi, was based on this story about Liu and Zhuge.
“Your majesty, please stand. I’ve committed an unforgiveable sin to determine if you are my true master.” Okay so it’s all good, Choi agrees to serve KH and pays him proper respect, but the way they got there, well it sure didn’t make us like Choi, did it. They set him up in the last episode as a stereotypically arrogant scholar, but geez to talk smack to the king like that, even if it was only as a test, that’s pretty disagreeable stuff. Needs to redeem himself big-time.

“Do you think his daughter is fit to be an empress?” Well there we have it. So is this going to be star-crossed lovers again like in Geunchogo? They won’t get to be together? Ugh please let’s not do that.
“If I resist you, you will forfeit your life. Legendary Wonyuh also broke discipline because of this.” Another one that shot past me but yay Internet. Here’s the historical figure who Goongyae was talking about:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonhyo
terebess.hu/zen/mesterek/Wonhyo.html
The first page mentions him marrying a widower princess, and the second credits him “as one of the men who took Buddhist study out of the aristocracy and spread it among the common people, a development that followed his resignation from the monastic order (Saṃgha) and subsequent marriage.” So here’s another storyline that was based on an earlier historical figure-—unless Goongyae actually did marry Yangil’s daughter (which I haven’t found any reference to; it may have happened but there's nothing online about it in English).
Whatever, that was certainly one of the more unusual endings you’re going to get for an episode! I don’t ever remember an ending quite like that one. Presumably we won’t even see what happens next.

Goongyae was truly worthy of being called a living Buddha at this time. He was like the rain and the savior to the peasants who suffered from hunger and continuous drought. He strictly controlled his men and himself, and won the trust and support of the people who had lost all hope. This was the power of Maitreya that he was counting on.“Yubi solicited Jegalgongmyung three times to recruit him.” That one shot right over my head...it turns out we’ve encountered this reference before. Yubi is Liu Bei and the other name is Zhuge Liang. Here’s the story:

As introduced previously, Choi Seung-woo was one of the three prodigies of Shilla. As a nobleman of Shilla, and a onetime bureaucrat of Tang, he unerringly understood and experienced the confusion and war that raged through China. And now he had become Kyun-hwon’s right hand. He was a man worth kneeling for. Meanwhile, Goongyae was headed toward Bukwon at the order of Yangil....“He will change his tune once he has possession of Myungju.” That Bokjikyum is a sharp one.
Secret Script of Dosun. Intrigue and fascination for this book of prophecy has continued for a thousand years to this day. The details of this book are unknown, but it is presumed to have contained Dosun’s findings about geomancy and its effect on human fate. Dosun shared this book with Wang Guhn. Koguryo Chronicle writes about the incident like this: “When King Taejo was 17 years old, Dosun came to him and said, ‘You came to the misfortune of a hundred years, and people of suffering await you.’ And he taught Taejo to direct and position an army, how to discern opportunities and geographical advantages, and how to honor, understand, and protect the nature.Geomancy, by the way, is sort of like reading tea leaves in a cup, but with rocks or dirt tossed on the ground.
