Well we certainly aren’t going to run short of material, are we. An entire episode just setting up Kyun Hwon’s first push for regional authority. And it was good, too. I prefer it when we get a little more of a mixture, but if KH emerged before the other two like the narration told us, then at least they’re being faithful to history and not creating a lot of filler just to give equal time to all three in every episode. So give them credit for that.
That first guy sure didn’t try very hard to argue for his life, did he. He was all cocky and blustery until they nabbed him and then he could barely talk. Enjoy your big haircut, dude.
“Teach these loafers what military order is about!” Geez these guys aren’t messing around, are they....but the physical abuse and executions right off the bat were surprising. Necessary? Maybe, interesting question. Even more surprising after KH released all of those smugglers—some of whom were former soldiers. “I know the sorrow of hunger and desperation.” I guess he’s showing he can be both tough and merciful.
Didn’t catch who the double agent was but I don’t think it was a named character. That sequence was at nighttime—and big credit to the director and producers for not over-lighting the sequence. We’ve seen some terrible examples of nighttime scenes with a ridiculous amount of light illuminating everything. Not here. Can’t see everything perfectly, well so what, neither could the real people.
Speaking of the narrated text, here it is:
Hey we're already through 5 percent of the series! Time flies when you're having fun.

At this time Kyun-hwon was fighting his formidable enemy in the southwestern coastal region, our hero Wang Guhn was steadfastly training in both literature and martial arts. Living under the care of Kihwon in Jukju, Goongyae was building the trust of his peers while waiting for his time to come. Let’s set these two men aside for now and learn more about Kyun-hwon, as he was the first one of the three principal characters to rise to power....and that’s perfectly fine because we have a good story going here and KH is already shaping up to be an excellent character.
