Not a lot to say about this one. Throwing lots of characters and situations at us to set things up.
“Instead of suppressing them with force, we must win their hearts with generosity and principles. That is the true display of Maitreya’s compassion.” Goongyae just gets more interesting with every scene. The way he flipped out over being offered concubines, nice piece of writing there. And he won’t dress like a king or sit on a throne either, how about that. Already the writers are creating a tough task for themselves, because WG being the privileged son of a wealthy landowner is nowhere near as good a story as Goongyae’s—especially with what developed at the end of the episode.
Hmmm, that Pyungdal guy is supposed to be Wang Ryung’s younger brother? At least a generation younger and looks nothing like him. And Sikryum, apparently Pyungdal’s son but looks nothing like his dad. Would have been nice to cast these roles with people who at least looked a little similar.
Best thing about the episode: Yu Gumpil, wow how can you not like a guy who shows cojones like that! A subordinate who steps right up and stares down the bigshot general—and backs it up.
Wang Ryung to his son: “Do you remember Jang Bogo?” HA!
“Your son will be born with the destiny of our king.” What, no shooting star? Well that didn’t take long! You guys warned me about the DJY parallels and already we have our first big one. Child-of-destiny prophecy.
Goongyae and Jong Gan are talking and snow is falling around them, and look at all the frozen breath. Good to see that.
So the wife is in labor and her husband is having a three-martini business lunch with his buddies. Dude, not making our gender look too good here....ya know?
Wait, Goongyae’s nanny is severely ill, and now she’s coughing violently...and no blood? Where is the blood? What’s happening? Have I been teleported to some bizarre alternate universe? Yikes!
But seriously, the traumatized little kid with his mother dying in front of him, and screaming on and on and on...no that is no good. No good at all. Worst thing in the episode. I’ve complained about this before. Maybe Korean audiences are desensitized to this particular thing and aren’t so bothered by it, but whatever, it’s a cheap stunt and shouldn’t be used. And why is she dying anyway? She doesn’t seem to have a fatal condition. Ugh, not convincing at all.
Wait a minute, I spoke too soon! The sun breaking through the clouds and lighting up the surface fog when WG is born. So we did get a sky premonition after all.
Here’s the narrated text:
Continues to be a very promising start. Now let’s just get past the little-kid-in-distress cliffhanger ASAP and get back to the good stuff.

Here’s the narrated text:
The last day of January, A.D. 877. Wang Guhn who later unites the three Han States and establishes the Koryo Empire was born. History records his birth like this: Emperor Taejo has a last name of Wang, first name of Guhn, byname of Yakchun, and is a man of Song-ak. He is the eldest son of King Saejo and Queen Weesook. He was born on the last day of January in the year of the rooster, in the south quarters of the residence in Song-ak. It is said mysterious light surrounded the courtyard and lit up the birth room when he was born. What’s a “byname”?
