This is a list of all of the named characters appearing in the series as of the current episode. Same thing that I've done for ten previous historicals here. The numbers in parentheses are the episode numbers of each character's debut.
For now the roster will simply list the characters in order of appearance. As the story develops I'll organize them into whatever groupings make the most sense.
NOTE: This roster will become LOADED with spoilers as the series progresses, so don't look at it if you're watching an earlier episode and want to avoid spoilers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately there's no AsianWiki page for this series so we don't have a nice online summary with photos of all of the major characters like we usually do. But the wiki-d.addicts site has a page for the series and links to actor/actress pages with photos (wiki.d-addicts.com/Emperor_Wang_Gun) and Wikipedia has a page with a long list of actor/actress names but fewer links (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taejo_Wang_Geon_(TV_series)).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goongyae (1) – Buddhist monk in the former Goguryeo territory. Rose to become commanding general of rebels who captured all of that territory as of Ep1. In Ep2 we learn that he's a Shillan prince. In Ep3 we learn that he's the son of King Gyeongmun, Shilla's 48th king, and a commoner concubine. In Ep4 we're told that His formal name as a monk was Sunjong. Accepts Yangil's youngest daughter Mihyang as his sort-of wife in Ep15. Holds the title of General under Yangil. Later breaks with Yangil and commands his own conquering army that eventually leads to him assembling a new state and declaring himself the king of Goguryeo (later Koryo). By Ep24 he's being addressed as Emperor. In Ep29 becomes sworn brothers with Wang Guhn, and formally receives Yunhwa into the palace as empress. In Ep61 renames his kingdom Majin and his reign the era of Mutae. In Ep95 renames his kingdom Taebong and his reign Suduk-mansae. In Ep120 he's overthrown and forced to flee the palace; ultimately he's killed by Eunbu (who he ordered to do it) with his own imperial sword.
Wang Guhn (1) – First seen in a montage, as a very young man “living in silence in Song-ak.” Son of Wang Ryung. In Ep9 we learn that his family has already arranged for him to marry Lady Yunhwa. In Ep23 his father retires and names him head of their clan and lord of Song-ak. In Ep27 King Goongyae names him Lord of Spirit and Energy, a title that carries the rank of army general. In Ep25 becomes sworn brothers with Yu Gumpil, Shin Seungkyum and Park Sulhee. In Ep29 becomes sworn brothers with Goongyae. Marries Oh Doyoung in Ep62; although he marries her first, she is formally his second wife. Marries his first wife Yu Buyong in Ep67. Marries Yu Suin in Ep85. In Ep96 Goongyae names him magistrate of Naju region and commander of the naval forces (not really a promotion, just an affirmation in a government reorganization). Named Imperial Guardian (second in power to only the emperor) by Goongyae in Ep100. As of Ep112 he's been formally removed from the Imperial Guardian role as a conswquence of his going to Naju for (supposedly) military reasons. Reinstated as IG by Goongyae in Ep118. In Ep120 leads the rebellion that overthrows Goongyae, making him the de facto king. Formally becomes king ("emperor" to be accurate) in Ep121 and reverts kingdom name to Koryo.
Kyun Hwon (1) – First seen during a montage in Ep1, as the self-proclaimed king of the Baekje region. Next seen in Ep5 as a commander (one step below general) in the Shilla army, helping guard prime minister Wi Hong's residence. In Ep6 we learn he was the son of a successful commoner named Ah Jagae but left home at 15, changed his name and joined the military. In Ep8 he's promoted to general. In Ep14 after his army successfully captures Mujinju fortress, the government gives him a position and the lengthy title of "Superior Chief of Military of South Shilla, Exclusive Military and Administrative Director of Juhnju, Beneficiary of 2000 household homestead in Hannam County." Proclaims himself a king in Ep14 after seizing the Mujinju territory to add to his Wansanju territory. After acquiring additional territories, proclaims a new Bekjae in Ep31. Removed from power in Ep191, the result of an overthrow led by Shin-guhm, and sent to live in Geumsan Temple. Escapes from the temple in Ep197 and arrives in Koryo in Ep198. In Ep199 he settles in Koryo and WG gives him lordship over the city of Yangju.
Jong Gan / Jongkhan (1) – Goongyae’s advisor. Buddhist monk. In Ep4 we learn that three generations of his family were slaughtered on (he claims) false charges of conspiracy by corrupt royals, and that he was the only survivor. When Goongyae becomes king he is referred to as "Advisor" and is highest in the council hierarchy. He later steps away from a council role while remaining "Advisor." In Ep119 he cryptically tells Goongyae that he's going away and won't see him "for a while" and bids him his "last farewell." Commits suicide by poison in Ep120.
Kim Wihong (1) - Not directly named but the EWG Wikipedia page reports this as his name. Lord of Chulwon Castle. Described himself as “descendant of royalty and an elite knight of Shilla”. Executed at Goongyae's order in Ep1 after the capture of Chulwon Castle (we didn't see him die but he was taken away to be executed).

Hwan Sungil (1) – General serving under Goongyae. Not seen again until Ep15 (earlier than Ep1 because of flashback) when we see him as one of Yangil's generals. Later switches loyalty to Goongyae and in Ep25 is seen in Goongyae's council. In Ep43 it's implied that he's the minister of military (but later on he isn't so it's not clear). Executed in Ep124 for attempting to overthrow WG and become emperor.
Park Jiyoon (1, identified 2) – Lord (“Daemodal”) of Pyungju in north Shilla. In Ep27 after King Goongyae moves his capital to Song-ak, he names Park Chief of the Supreme Council. In Ep69 Goongyae replaces him in that position with Wang Pyungdal; he remains in the government with an "elder statesman" status. In Ep77 we learn that he has two sons and that Goongyae has appointed them to positions in the government.
Kang Jangja (1, identified 2) – Lord of Shinchun village in north Shilla, west of the Pae River (Taedong River). Successful merchant. Father of Yunhwa. In Ep30, after Yunhwa's marriage to King Goongyae, we learn that Kang is now the government's highest-ranking official (although we're not given his specific title). Sentenced to three years of confinement in Ep102 for associating with Ahjitae who was plotting Goongyae's murder. Executed at Goongyae's order in Ep108 during a second inquisition on the matter.
Kang Yunhwa (1) – Lord Kang’s daughter (not confirmed for certain until Ep4). In Ep9 we learn that her family has already arranged for her to marry WG. In Ep26 Goongyae agrees to marry her, after repeated pleading by his officials to accept an empress. In Ep29 she's officially received into the palace. Executed at Goongyae's order in Ep116 on chargers of treason and infidelity.

In Ep69 Goongyae names him Supreme Councilor. In Ep76 Goongyae convicts him of coveting the throne for his nephew WG (based on false charges made up by Jongkahn) and sentenced to a life of exile on a remote island.
Shin Hwon (2) – General serving under Goongyae. After seeing him in Ep2 we next see him in Ep8, at an earlier point in time, serving as a troop commander under Ki Hwon in Jukju region. Dies in battle against Yangil's forces in Ep28.

In Ep96 he's named a "general and local chieftan"--he already is a general so it's not entirely clear what this means. In Ep132 he says that Pyongyang is his hometown, which contradicts what we learned in Ep24. In Ep145 we learn that WG has designated him to be the "Western Subjugation General" with the assignment of subjugating Bekjae's western lands. In Ep172 WG removes him ffom office and exiles him to Gok Island, the result of largely fabricated charges made by jealous rivals.
Master Dosun (2) – Highly prominent Buddhist monk, originally from the Zen sect. Was widely known as the "Father of Geomancy." First seen in flashback (one year before Wang Guhn's birth) in Ep2, then afterwards in real time. In Ep30 we learn that he had recently passed away, at Oakyong Temple (by Mt. (Subtitling in Ep3 incorrectly identifies him as "Myungmoon".) Had two sons with Princess Younghwa. Also married Younghwa's younger sister, who became his second queen. Also took an unnamed commoner woman as a concubine, and fathered Goongyae by her. Seen in additional brief flashbacks in Ep17, at his coronation.
Princess Younghwa (3) - Older daughter of King Hunnan. Seen only in flashback in Ep3. Married Eungryum, who became King Gyeongmun, and had two sons with him.

Goongyae's mother (3) - Commoner (in Ep8 we learn she's a farmer's daughter) who becomes a concubine of King Gyeongmun. First seen in flashback in Ep3, when her infant's nanny flees with the infant and successfully evades government troops trying to kill the infant. She's living in the palace complex and has the title "Lady" but we aren't told her name or anything else. Next seen in Ep8, roughly twenty years ahead; she's a monk at Chiljang Temple and has the title "venerable"; it's implied that she's the seniormost monk at the temple.
Queen Jinseong (4) – 51st ruler (third queen ruler) of Shilla. First seen in flashback in Ep4, then first seen present-time in Ep5. In Ep36 we see that Hyogong is now king of Shilla, so Jinseong is no longer ruling at that point. In Ep38 we learn that she's dead; died in Hainsa Temple in Daeya fortress.

Older than his fellow soldiers and acts as a sort of advisor to KH. In Ep11 KH describes him as a "learned scholar," although we aren't told if that's from formal schooling. Named Prime Minister of Bekjae in Ep32. Relieved of command over the military by KH in Ep42; KH gives it to Choi Seung Woo. Relieved of the rest of his responsibilities in Ep185; KH gives them to Choi (but allows him to retain his title). Chu Hocho (6) – Shilla soldier serving under Kyun Hwon. First seen in Ep6 guarding prime minister Wi Hong's residence. Originally from Sangju, as we learn in Ep7. In Ep9 we learn that he was once the leader of a band of thieves before coming under Kyun Hwon's influence and becoming an honorable soldier. In Ep17 he's referred to as a general, so obviously he's been promoted. Dies in Ep109 in combat at Daeya Fortress.

Seen in Ep121 in a Royal Guards meeting with Bok Jikyum. Referred to as "Steward." We learn that he had been in charge of security for WG's residence. In Ep138 he reappears and is seen training Prince Mu in sword use, and apparently has been appointed as the prince's formal trainer in martial arts. Full hame finally given in Ep142, when we also learn that he's a general. Dies in combat in Ep142, killed by Prince Yong Guhm while protecting Prince Mu from the Bekjae army.
Won Hee (8) – Troop commander under Ki Hwon in Jukju region. Later becomes a general under Goongyae. Dies in battle against Yangil's forces in Ep28.
Ki Hwon (9) - Says he's a general but really is a bandit leader; his group controls the Jukju area of southern Shilla by force and robbery. Killed by his own subordinates in Ep14 the night before engaging in an impulsive, ill-advised battle against a superior force.
Daeju / Mu-sang (9) – Kyun Hwon’s little sister (technically half-sister, same father). Daughter of Ajakae and Namwon. In Ep34 we learn that she's a military commander in her father's army. In Ep193, after not seeing her for many episodes, she returns and we learn that she's become a monk, taken the Buddhist name Mu-sang, and is the head of a local temple in Chulwon.

In Ep129 WG refers to having granted him the title "Foster Father", although it's not clear when this happened. In Ep130 he leaves his Sangju castle and relocates to Koryo, and says that the castle belongs to Koryo now. In Ep199 we learn that he passed away. He had consumed a great deal of alcohol and there was speculation of a suicide, but this was never confirmed and a possible motive never given.
Namwon (9) – Ajakae's second wife.
Lady Park (9) – Kyun Hwon’s wife.
Shin Gom / Shin-guhm (9) – First son of Kyun Hwon and Lady Park, first seen as a seven-year-old in Ep9. Named crown prince and assigned to military duty in Ep36. In Ep131 KH names him and Iron Warrior and orders him sent to an outpost assignment for training, likely to Sangju. In Ep199 he's crowned the second king of Bekjae. In Ep200, after he surrenders his kingdom to Koryo, a narrated text tells us that he was exonerated and given a government position, Koryo having concluded that he was pressured to do what he did and it was "against his own accord.” But we're also told that he disappears from the historical record after this, and that it's suspected that he was later executed like his two brothers were.
Geum Song (10) – Governor of Mida Peak region in the southwest. Has aligned himself with Nung Chang (Sudal), a rebel who controls the region, and turned his back on the national government.
Chong Rye / Jonglae (10) - Known as Lord Na. Leads the most powerful clan in the Mida Peak region. In Ep13 KH names him governor of Geumsung region under his (KH's) new government. In Ep61, as a reward for his assistance in Koryo's conquering of Geumsung, Jonglae is given the honorific name of Na of Naju, by Goongyae's proclamation. Nung Chang / Sudal (10) – Rebel who commands the Mida Peak region. Calls himself a general; not sure if he actually was one or not. Given the nickname Sudal (“Sea Otter”) because he commands the southwestern seas. In Ep12 KH defeats his forces and he submits to KH's authority. Executed at Goongyae's order in Ep94 after being captured in battle and brought to Chulwon.
Gom Chi (10) – lower subordinate of Nung Chang.

In Ep93 we learn that his ministry no longer has command oversight responsibility (reassigned to the new Patrol Guards) and is purely administrative. In Ep96 he's replaced and demoted to cavalry general. In Ep121 WG names him head of the Royal Guards.
Eun Bu (15) – Officer serving under Yangil. The first of Yangil's subordinates to decide he would ally with Goongyae over Yangil. Holds the title of General of Interior Affairs under Goongyae and is second to Jongkahn in hierarchy in Goongyae's council. In Ep27 after King Goongyae moves his capital to Song-ak, he gives Eun the additional role of Minister of Military. He loses that additional role in Ep45 when Goongyae reassigns it to Bok Jikyum. In Ep120 we're told that he's the leader of the Royal Guards (which he presumably had been for a long time). Also in Ep120, after Goongyae is overthrown and Eunbu leads a group of Royal Guards helping Goongyae flee the palace, Geum Dae strikes him dead with a sword just after he (Eunbu) kills Goongyae at Goongyae's order.
Yi Honnam (15) – General serving under Yangil. (First name not given until Ep19.) Brother-in-law of Hwan Sungil. Later switches loyalty to Goongyae and in Ep25 is seen in Goongyae's council. Mihyang (15) – Youngest of Yangil’s three daughters. Becomes Goongyae's sort-of wife, although he mostly treats her like a nun and doesn't consider himself her husband. In Ep30, when Goongyae has become king, we learn that she's being addressed as Madam Bukwon. (She was not named Empress.) In Ep41 she dies in a building fire in Myungju during Goongyae's tour of Koryo.
Choi Seung Woo (16) - Renowned scholar. Born in Surabul. Had left the country in 890 as instability grew, to go to Tang to further his studies. Passed the Tang national exam and worked for the Tang Ministry of Rites until 893 when he returned home. Named Vice Prime Minister of Bekjae in Ep32. Given control of the military by Kyun-hwon in Ep42, at Neunghwan's expense. In Ep157 KH refers to him as "one of Shilla's Three Prodigies." Given the remainder of the prime minister's responsibilities by KH in Ep185 (KH allows Neunghwan to retain the PM title). Allowed to commit suicide by poison in Ep190, as insurrecitonists loyal to Shin-guhm overthrow the government to prevent Geum-kang from assuming the throne. The insurrectionists were to behead him.

Huhwol (18) – Monk who Goongyae encounters in Ep18. In Ep20 we learn that he's the father of Kim Soonshik, the lord of Myungju Fortress, and was fortress lord himself before turning power over to his son. We also learn that he's a direct descendant of Kim Juwon, who had once sought the Shilla throne and failed, and was sent to Myungju in 780.
Hong Yu (20) – General at Myungju serving under Kim Soonshik. Serving in Goongyae's council as of Ep25. Named "Second Commander" of Koryo by Goongyae in Ep45.
Kim Soonshik / Wang Soonshik (20) - Governor of Myungju Fortress. First mentioned in Ep18; identified as "royalty" but not explained specifically. In Ep20 we discover that he's Huhwal's son and so learn of his royal status. Supported Goongyae and initially refused to recognize WG's authority after Goongyae's downfall, but in Ep162 he finally decides to honor his father’s wish and pledges loyalty to Koryo. As an expression of appreciation WG bestows the royal surname Wang on him.
Bae Hyunkyung (21) – General serving at Myungju under Kim Soonshik. Seen in Ep25 serving in Goongyae's council. Named "Third Commander" of Koryo by Goongyae in Ep45. Named Minister of Military by WG in Ep179.

In Ep162 WG grants him the posthumous title “Valiant Warrior”, and the posthumous position of “Highest Merit Subject of Unification of the Three Kingdoms”.
Kim Un / Kim On (21) – General serving at Myungju under Kim Soonshik. Seen in Ep25 serving in Goongyae's council. Later seen among Koryo's high-ranking generals, so obviously he became one. In Ep62 he and Jong Yae are named head commanders of the newly conquered Geumsung/Naju region. In Ep96 he's named a "general and local chieftan"--he already is a general so it's not entirely clear what this means. Killed by Yaesul in battle at Mt. Gong in Ep160.
Jong Yae / Jong Hee (21) – General serving at Myungju under Kim Soonshik. Seen in Ep25 reporting to Goongyae in council. As of Ep49 he's been heading up a military post in Choongju. In Ep61 he and Kim Un are named head commanders of the newly conquered Geumsung/Naju region.
infant son of Goongyae and Mihyang / Hyosun (23) - Mihyang showed up with him in Ep23 and Goongyae's soldiers promptly took him from her (Misaeng being judged as unworthy to be an empress and the tie to Yangil being judged as undesirable for Goongyae) and we were told nothing more about his fate. In Ep33 we learn that the empress was told that the boy is being kept somewhere in Myungju. In Ep40 we learn that he's at Kulsan Temple. We see him in Ep41 and learn that he has the Buddhist name of Hyosun (we still do not know his regular name).

In Ep61, as a reward for his assistance in Koryo's conquering of Geumsung, Oh is given the title of Daryun and the honorific name of Oh of Naju, by Goongyae's proclamation. In Ep62 he's named governor of the newly named Naju region.
Shin Seungkyum / Neungsan (23) - Citizen who's conscripted and brought into Song-ak to work on Goongyae's royal palace but doesn't want to work. Originally from Goksung. "Sworn brother" of Park Sulhee. Becomes sworn brothers with WG and Yu Geumpil in Ep25. In Ep96 he's named a "general and local chieftan"--he already is a general so it's not entirely clear what this means. In Ep132 we learn that it isn't until this point in the story when he gets the name Shin Seungkyum; it's given to him by WG. Dies in Ep161, disguising himself as WG and charging into battle to be killed so that WG can escape from an encirclement at Mt. Gong. In 122 we learn that his role includes "“economic development by enrichment of international trade and commerce," so clearly his position is not entirely military, if at all. In Ep141 we learn that he's recently been appointed to the Patrol Guards, and his presence at a high council meeting clearly suggests that he ranks as a General. Goes to Bekjae as the designated royal family hostage (in exchange for Jin Ho) in ep149 when Bekjae and Koryo agree to friendly relations. In Ep153, after Jin Ho's death is discovered by Bekjae to have been murder by poison, Kyun-hwon orders Wang beheaded.
Named "First Commander" of Koryo by Goongyae in Ep45. In Ep113 he's assigned to replace Park Sulhee as commander in the region bordering Sangju. After switching his allegiance to Bekjae, he commits suicide in Ep131 as he's about to be arrested for leading an attempt to assassinate WG.
Myungil (15) – Yangil’s brother. Serves as an officer under him. Brother-in-law of Yi Honnam. Killed in battle against Goongyae's army in Ep33 (I believe by Shin Seungkyum).
Yangil’s two sons-in-law (15) – Names not given yet; two officers serving under Yangil. We see the second son-in-law again in Ep21 serving as a messenger to Goongyae.

Oh Darin (23) – Friend of Jonglae; wealthy merchant who owns a large salt mill in Mokpo, in the Geumsung region. In Ep31 we learn that his wife has passed away.
Gong. In Ep162 WG grants him the posthumous title “Valiant Warrior” and a posthumous position entitled “Blue Tiger Guard of Founding Country, Superior Regional Defender and Royal Protector.”
Park Sulhee (23) - Citizen who's conscripted and brought into Song-ak to work on Goongyae's royal palace but doesn't want to work. Originally from Haesung. "Sworn brother" of Shin Seungkyum. In Ep85, with the capital now in Chulwon, he's assigned to be a teacher at the Foreign Language Academy. In Ep121 WG names him Naval Administrator. Shin dies before the order is carried out; not clear how he died but may have somehow ingested poison of his own.

In Ep121 WG names him his adviser (an informal designation, not capitalized) in addition to retaining the secretariat position. As of Ep141 he's now Minister of Construction. In Ep150 WG names him Minister of Military and Captain of the Patrol Guards (replacing the deceased Taepyoung) but he refuses. But in Ep151 he accepts.
