The first two-thirds of this episode was boring and disappointing. The final third...well it wasn’t boring.
The way the rebellion just sort of fizzled out, it didn’t make sense. “We can’t put our lives on the line for a battle we can’t win.” Can’t win? Says who? Why are we supposed to believe all of a sudden that they can’t win? What’s changed? That wasn’t explained and it was a big problem. And that was even before Yeogwang had the two clan leaders executed—at that point things started to falter and you could sort of buy it, but that wasn’t the reason.
And then the way Yeohwa just completely flip-flopped literally overnight, it was very hard to accept. “Baekje isn’t a country of the nobility. It is a country of the people. Break up the army.” No. Just no. Completely inconsistent with her character to be so wishy-washy and not have thought this through. Couldn’t accept it at all. Her scene with Hae Geon was Hae’s best scene in the entire series—his incredulousness and reminding her of what the whole point was, I think he spoke for most of us there.
“They are your family. Save them.” Dandan is really something. She has to go into the supporting character hall of fame. And later she gives Hae Geon a scolding—and bless her for doing it because no one else seems to want to do it.
Interesting that Payun and Gugeom are arguing for restraint towards Yeohwa—didn’t expect that. Especially since they wanted her and the baby snuffed out earlier.
Yeogusu: “I promised Wanwoldang that I’d let her punish the Wiryegung ruler.” Huh? Who are you to hand out punishment responsibility? And why would the queen be given that responsibility for anybody, especially a rebel?
So a lot of annoying things in the first two-thirds. And then Yeohwa drank the poison. We’ll talk a ton about Yeohwa in the wrap-up thread...for now I’ll just say that fortunately this was consistent with her character, unlike earlier. She faced her fate with dignity and willingly did what she thought was the right thing. Have to respect that.
And of course you can’t have any sympathy for a rebel leader having to face punishment when the rebellion fails, but I just felt very sad for all of the bad cards that were dealt to her in her life and how she should have been queen and helping KG run the country. A terrific female character in a genre that struggles to create them, and she was squandered. I don’t get it.
