This one started out pretty boring but later it trended upwards and had a very clever ending.
More of the take-the-nobles’-power story and it’s still not very compelling. And KG’s argument to Jin Seung for the clans giving up their soldiers wasn’t nearly as good as it could have been and should have been. Jin Seung made the better argument (although he was unreasonably arrogant about the idea of controlling kings). Plus, KG seems awfully naive about actually getting nobles to accept his vision to the extent that they’ll give up their power. Continues to be pretty weak stuff.
Jin Godo: “Our crock is already cracked.” Well if that isn’t the darndest line I’ve heard in a long time. Who cracked the crock--a crook? Execute him then—so he’ll croak. And toss the body in a creek.
Here’s a question: can Seokkop read? Apparently not because he doesn’t appear to know what’s written on the ribbon. I suppose there was no reason for him to have learned, since he grew up in humble circumstances.
“How can I have a nice dream when he snores?” And then Annoying Girl says “I don’t know what to say.” Well here’s what to say...You say “I apologize for making you marry someone you never loved.” Yeah I’m beating this to death but they continue to make light of it and it isn’t funny.
“Please abide by Eoraha’s will. That is the only answer.” Wow of all the places to get some wisdom. Who would ever have thought that Annoying Girl would school Jin Seung. And she’s right; she knows what happened with her native country.
“What’s the use of reading all those books? You are thoughtless and rash.” And she scores again! Twice in one episode! All of a sudden it’s the Twilight Zone.
Ugh, we had this great relationship potential between KG and Yeohwa and now all we’re left with is Seokkop making goo-goo eyes at Jin Ai. YAWWWWNNNNN.....
“We will help you in dethroning Yeogu and putting Prince Yeogwang on the throne.” When was the last time we saw Yeohwa genuinely happy about anything? That smile on her face was almost disorienting, it’s been so long since we’ve seen it. But here things started to get more interesting, all of the rival clans in one place together.
Yeogwang: “I will preserve Baekje’s tradition. I won’t allow it to become a mixture of all sorts of people.” This is interesting too, if only for how it relates to what’s going on in the world today.
KG: “You have to enjoy the vibration of the bow to become a great archer.” Great line. One of his best in the series. Very insightful. You need that passion for what you’re doing.
Yeohwa’s doctor: “Her lungs are congested with blood.” But she hasn’t coughed up any blood—wow talk about ironic. Actually that’s a good thing because according to the unwritten laws of historical dramas it’s not terminal. Thank goodness.
“I can’t read.” This again! Somebody please teach Dandan to read already.
They burned the ribbon! You bastards! Or at least they started to....
“Answer me!” Well answer him already, don’t just stand there saying “Eoraha”, geez that’s annoying...But hey that was a heck of an ending! I enjoyed that immensely. After all of this teasing and wondering how the Seokkop secret would unravel, and of course after expecting the sort of slow, gradual tension that we figured was starting up with those three guys (Payun, Gogeum, Duko) figuring it out, KG stumbles right across it and the whole thing completely blows up right there and then. Totally unexpected; you’d never expect it to happen like that. Terrific idea.
Now I suppose we’ll be distracted with Seokkop stuff for a while. It’s about time to move on, though...Goguryeo awaits and only ten episodes remain.
