Well she ain’t dead yet, is she. But maybe that was a mistake, we’ll see. The whole thing was handled very strangely.
So she leaves the room and goes into the kitchen, and it’s difficult to see for sure but she appears to pull a string out of her mouth and then a lot of liquid comes up, but it’s not like she’s vomiting. I guess she swallowed some sort of esophagus plug attached to the string, and tied the string around a tooth, and the plug kept the poisoned wine from getting to her stomach. Is that the deal? Whatever was going on there, we needed more of an explanation. It was shown almost like an afterthought and I’ve never seen such a thing before. And apparently it didn’t work very well anyway because she still got walloped by the poison and will likely die anyway...so what was the point of including it? Because it’s darned clever and a great plot twist and it just seems like the whole thing was sort of squandered. The idea must have been that she’d poison the king and Yeochan’s return would save he own neck. Great idea and it adds another wrinkle to a terrific character, but poor execution in the writing and directing.
Sure didn’t expect the king would drink the poison! Would have lost money on that bet. But you know what, if they both were going to drink poison, then maybe for the integrity of the story they should have died right there. Because you can go to the well too often with this kind of thing. If you’re going to show a dramatic series-changing moment and then pull back on it—Wait A Minute They Lived!—it does tend to make you more suspicious for the rest of the series and less willing to buy in the next time something dramatic starts happening.
Yeogu: “I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from killing her.” Ummm...what were you going to do, lecture her to death? But at least give him credit for some self-control and for not lashing out in infantile frustration like he did when he poked Yeosan’s eye out.
“Just kill me.” Chapter 483 of the forever-growing book Why You Shouldn’t Be A Royal Physician.
“Mother could die. Does it matter who we ask for help?” Good for Yeohwi. He really is an interesting character in this series and that was a good example of his showing independent thinking. Now he’s sitting there with that little box that he’s supposed to give to Yeochan; I hope he opens it. It must have the order that Biryu wrote in it, and it will be great for the storyline to see what he does with it if he opens the box.
The actor playing him is a good choice of casting, too. Physically he doesn’t look as much like his two hot-headed brothers as they resemble each other, which helps set him apart, and he’s doing a nice job with the role.
“If you can’t shoot me in the heart, you’re not my nephew.” Wow there’s quite a line. Gonna try that on my own nephew and see what happens.
“This is why you didn’t learn properly.” This is almost turning into a running gag.
Is Hae Geon Go Chisu’s son in some way? He called Go “father” at one point; maybe that was just a subtitling mistake? They don’t really seem like they should be related, and their names don’t match, but it would explain where Hae came from. I won’t add this to the character roster without more evidence but will keep an eye on it.
The next episode is the halfway point of the series and now that King Gye apparently isn’t long for this earth, you almost have to expect that all three of the older folks are going to die and the plan is to start fresh with the next generation’s struggles in episode 31. Wouldn’t have expected a succession struggle this soon after Gye took the throne, but in real history he wasn’t king for very long so at least the series will be that much true to history if it goes in that direction.
p.s. The subs weren’t anywhere near as good in this one as in recent episodes. Hope this was just a one-time thing.
