Didn’t think very much of this episode. Other than the ending it wasn’t awful, but it just wasn’t all that good. Didn’t have anywhere near the sophistication or interesting writing of the first fifteen episodes. Just kind of going through the motions.
“Do you think Buyeo Jun will listen to you?” Well of course he won’t; he won’t care in the least. Yeogu’s a little delusional to think he will.
Another bender? That’s three episodes in a row. I think at this point Yeohwi needs to get into a twelve-step program.
And the headband survives yet again to see another day! That thing has more lives than a cat.
“Slaves don’t eat well enough to look this good.” Employee of the month is Jin Seung. And looking at their hands for callouses was exactly the right move. Well done sir. Now if only they had listened to him....
Where is Hongran getting the fancy clothes? It’s kind of silly; she really sticks out and looks incongruous. And give Yeogu his ring back! Oh geez and now she kisses him? “I like you a lot.” Then give him his ring back! “Your mother’s ring is mine.” Looks like I’m gonna be beating on this for a loooong time.
“The loser will submit to the winner and serve the winner.” Really? Does either side really think the other will stick to that deal if they lose? Get real.
Sayu picks up a sword. “I will cut off Murong Huang’s head with this Gaecheongeom.” See that’s a perfect example of the subtitles being heavy with untranslated names. Not one single English-language hit from Google on that one. The subs are MUCH better in recent episodes but these names are a tall order.
Here’s the historical narration:
So we get a close-up shot of Jin Godo in a martial arts stance, then they cut away to a camera about a half a mile farther back while Jin goes through a whirling, twisting sequence, and then back to a close-up when it ends. Really? Is anybody watching this series dumb enough to think it was the same guy? Ugh.
That whole sequence at the Gaoping Fortress door was extremely weak. Unwatched, unguarded high ground being so close by, for one thing...and then they light the wooden door on fire and the defending soldiers freak out like little kids. Yecch. Oh and all of those local people they rounded up to stand there with them and make their army look bigger...What was in it for them? Were they forced to do it, or were they offered payment? That needed explaining. And then the cable-aided wall climb, sure that was a good visual...but are we really supposed to believe that none of the defenders was looking out over the wall to see them coming? Total groaner right there. And unlike the ambush in episode 15, when Yeogu was wisely held back, he’s the first one leading the assault this time? I complimented the writing in 15 for being smart, but this battle sequence was obviously put together by the same people who put together the weak one in episode 16. Same sort of implausible stuff and mental sloppiness.
Right now it feels like the series is living off the good material that was set up in the first fifteen episodes, rather than building on it. This business about wandering through distant Chinese lands, very reminiscent of when DJY went south. The real Gye was king for only two years, so I hope this doesn’t last too long.

Here’s the historical narration:
King Ye’s seal. It was the national seal passed down by Buyeo kings. It was the symbol of Buyeo. Buyeo was just a puppet of Goguryeo, but King Hyeon was able to call himself the king of Buyeo because of King Ye’s seal. It was just a national seal, but it could bind the Yemaek people as one.Hyeon is a real person and matters at this point in real history, so there’s a positive.
