Hmmm...A decent episode but not as good as the previous one. For the most part it continued to tell the story very well, and the cinematography, staging, and combat/stunt work were all impressive just like in the previous episode. But things got too bogged down by Kim Jun's leg injury. Okay, we get it, he's hurt. Half an episode about it and we haven't even gotten through the evening yet? Ugh. We all know he's gonna fight tomorrow so stop trying to milk the thing for suspense. The first four episodes were lively and engaging, so hopefully this was just an anomaly.
Subeop: "It's enough to make Buddha weep." He seemed to be the only one talking any sense in all this. The tournament has been presented so beautifully, I almost feel guilty not being unhappy about it...but all of those spectators cheering the blood and death, this is a Roman Empire tournament, not a Koryo tournament.
Subeop again: "He has a pure heart. Buddha still lives inside him. He'll be back." Definitely could make for an interesting character, the conflicting interests and beliefs pulling and tugging on him. Not sure how much of the real Kim Jun MBC will give us...but that's for down the road, not now.
Choe Chungmyong mocking the red team: "Guess they're not ready for a man's game." Big talk from a guy sitting in a skybox! I don't see you out there, pal. And why was the blue team repeatedly complaining about cheating and dirty play? Just get the ball in the net and anything goes, isn't that the idea?
They did get just a little bit far-fetched with a few of the stunts during the combat. If you get hit with one of those mallets, even if you fall off your horse you're not going to fly upwards--it's not a zero-gravity tournament. But it wasn't bad enough to make a stink about, especially compared to some of the nonsense we've seen in other historicals.
Had to do a freeze-frame when KJ was in the infirmary and look at the instruments in the doctor's kit. Some of them looked almost like stainless steel, which would have been impossible--far too early for that. Can't be silver plating either, same reason. They were too shiny to be iron and too silvery to be bronze...wonder if the producers made a mistake on this.
Choe C's doctor tells him he'll live for a long time and Choe looks at him. "Sycophant." Cracked me up! He kinda had it coming, but once again the universal KHD principle at work, being a physician sucks.
One thing I'm already getting tired of is that female ogre who supervises the kitchen. Enough of the slapping and yelling and bitching. Go away already. Or let's put her in the tournament and see what happens! You want her coming at you with a big mallet? Yikes.
Terrific music once again...right up until the closing credits when we got some sort of lame, bland pop filler. Let's please put up a firewall and keep it there.
After the previous episode I was really expecting a heck of a lot from the series, but this episode sort of brought everything back down to earth. We need some of that miraculous KHD healing power that makes injuries go away quickly so things can get moving again.
