Another episode with a lot of excellent material, especially in the first half. Very well done--you can totally feel the tension in the air. A lot more quiet in this one than in most of the previous episodes, and the quiet worked. Finally the series has gotten serious about telling a good story. What a shame it took this long to get here.
And just like the previous episode, Eternal Triangle stuff got in the way and killed the flow of the episode whenever it showed up. Especially that long soliloquy from YM, it was a totally forced scene and was way too long. And when YM hints to Jung-hwa that he may be heading to his death...why did we need that long flashback sequence? We understood the implication. Frankly the flashback was insulting, like Hey you dumb viewers, we're gonna make absolutely sure you understand because you probably didn't get it the first time. Ugh.
The poisoning angle certainly was interesting, but Wikipedia says that this king died from disease. So unless that source is wrong, we didn't see the truth. And really it was unnecessary--the death was enough to propel the story forward, no matter the cause. But I will confess to really liking the autopsy scene--that kind of unusual scene is always fun to see in a series. Did anybody else wonder why JB didn't stay the full five days if it would have taken five days for the poison to be detected? He said his presence was causing unrest but he would have been entirely justified to insist on a full, proper investigation. Nobody would have been able to deny him that (without arousing suspicion).
The scene where Moo-jin died...why did he leave to deliver the letter at night, all by himself? Seems like there are smarter ways to deliver a letter without arousing suspicion. And whatever would have prompted YM or Chief Jang to tail him, like they knew he was delivering a letter? They had no reason to suspect anything, at least none we were shown. I didn't like that scene at all. Sloppy writing.
Heck of a job by Baek-ryung fighting off those soldiers! He was pretty clumsy about sneaking off at night down a main path--duh--but he sure made up for it.
Well I know what's coming in the next episode--at least generally--but the big question is whether or not YM kills Kim Yang. Seems like that's what he'll have to do to atone for everything he's been forced into lately and find peace at last. (But I was totally wrong about Chae-ryung dying early so I'm not gonna predict anything else!). Hopefully the Eternal Triangle doesn't intrude into the finale because if the last two episodes are any indication, it could be very good.
