A mostly boring episode, with one injection of complete absurdity with the assassination.
It was nice to get an explanation for why people from different factions were getting high posts at the same time. We could have used it earlier, but better late than never.
"I escaped." Sorry YJ but nobody with any brains will believe that.
"Please excuse me." Okay JB so you don't want to be the regent's political ally. Fine. Don't stand up and walk out on him! That was stupid and arrogant. It's becoming more and more difficult to respect him as a leader. He keeps doing this over and over. You can certainly give him credit for wanting to remain above the fray, but there's no reason to be a jerk about it. How can he not understand that snubbing and offending people does no good for the Chunghae base he's trying to build up.
I like the way they've resurrected the brother character. The way he's providing advice to JB based on everything he knows from his past, good idea. A redemption story is always nice; you want to root for the guy now.
Speaking of rooting for people... "I will give life a chance...until I die and see you again." What a nice moment. How cool was it to see Yon back with those adopted orphans. As usual he's the most welcome sight in the entire episode.
But those orphans..."I will train them to be the center of our business operation when they grow up." Okay, Chae-ryung, but what if they're dimwits?....Oh wait...never mind, if they're dimwits you can train them to be politicians.
Oh goody, a nice long staring scene with JB and Jung-hwa. Loooong staring scene with nothing happening. I'm wondering if they add those scenes just to fill up time. This episode ran under 59 minutes which is slightly shorter than most, even with the scene.
Four assassins and they can't beat JB? Madam Jami needs to offer more than minimum wage.
Now about that assassination scene. First of all, where did YJ get a Hwarang uniform and the credentials to get into that meeting? Did nobody making the series think it was important enough to explain that? Then he walks in and sits down among all of the legitimate Hwarang leaders and nobody questions who the complete stranger is? And okay, he throws the knife and kills the guy, no problem there...but he and his two goons fight their way out of a place crawling with elite Hwarang fighters and military guards? And without much fight..mostly just jumped the wall and ran away. That whole sequence was an utterly ridiculous piece of writing. Possibly the worst, stupidest scene of the entire series.
Also I had a hard time buying that the virtuous Kim Woo-jing suddenly decides to wipe out political enemies left and right. It's not necessarily the wrong decision for him in that situation, but there needed to be some character development before then to make it more believable.
One good note to end on: Give JB credit for not bending the rules for Soon-jong. It's tough to look a friend in the eye and turn him down but he was right and Soon-jong never should have asked in the first place. Frankly it was a strange scene, taking place then and there rather than much earlier.
I was surprised they killed off Kim Myung so quickly after bringing him into the story. Hope we get a whole bunch of new characters for these final nine episodes; this series has been kind of stingy on adding characters but it will definitely need some for the final stretch.
