So most of this episode was about overhauling the Yeom Moon character. Mixed feelings about this. The good side is, it looks like they're turning him into more of the real Yeom Moon / Yeom Jang from JB's later years. Probably won't get there exactly but it's moving in the right direction. So that's good to see. The downside is that the whole thing makes for a shaky storyline. Not only does JB not kill him, which of course he would do, but after sending him into slavery--WITH his pirate buddies--he completely forgets about him and doesn't keep track of where he is. And now YM is running around Changhae again, unrecognized. Just not believable. And what, he's found religion now, praying to Buddha so he can kill JB? Ugh.
Well that was awfully nice getting to see Yon and Hajin married. We deserve a nice scene like that. How can you not be happy watching it. And the scenes afterwards, what a nice surprise they were. Completely unexpected and so heartfelt. Never would have bet we'd get so much of the episode with the two of them. Smart move by the producers, especially after the interminable love triangle that had so little love in it.
"How can I get married before you do?" I don't understand that. It's a cultural thing; can somebody explain it to me? Seems to be that your elder should be married before you are, is that it?
Mak-bong didn't recognize YM? Really? I wonder about the continuity there. Could swear that he knows who YM is and has recognized him in the past. And then Jung-hwa didn't recognize him during that fight, even though she recognized him when he jumped in and fought for her earlier? More of what I said above; just doesn't sit right.
"My only regret is that I couldn't kill Jang Bogo earlier." Hey Madam Jami, remember you most certainly could have. But wow that takes some toughness for her to admit defeat, even temporarily, and show up at that meeting.
And on the other hand, shame on Jung-hwa for rubbing it in Madam Jami's face when she did show up. Total lack of class on her part.
This stuff about abolishing social status, how naive is JB? "It is a very dangerous idea." The regent is right. Didn't JB have anybody around him talking sense to him? You can understand why he'd want that, considering his origins, but he'd have to be a complete idiot not to think that it wouldn't stir up huge unrest among the elites.
Aw come on, the memorial service is at the same temple where YM is? Out of all the temples in the country? Sheesh. Would Kim Yang really send YM to a temple where many people would recognize him? He's not that stupid.
So now we're into the fourth quarter of the series and it will be about the more political side of JB's life, obviously. Which is good as far as showing actual history. I just wish they hadn't tried to turn the pirate Yeom Moon into the later Yeom Jang. The YM character, he was an interesting person with his inner moral conflicts and it would have been perfectly fine for that character to be a different person and die before the real YJ emerges in the later years. But maybe it will all end up being a satisfying story in the end. Time will tell.
