Most of this episode was annoying. So both sides grabbed each other's chief and then swapped for them back. It was all one big time-filler that advanced the storyline exactly zero zip zilch squat nada. Except possibly for Sul getting shot, depending on whether or not he survives...but even that, it was such a cliché that the bad guys would do something devious. So most of it served very little purpose...
...but then the taxation minister showed up and all heck broke loose with Madam Jami, and wasn't that a great surprise! The tax audit angle was hilarious. I wish Jung-hwa hadn't been involved with it--it would have been much more interesting to have it come in as an entirely outside complication--but either way, the cooked books and all, it was the one worthwhile thing in the episode. A historical like this one, where there's so much room for fictional storylines because less is known about the real history, the fiction should be good. Lots of surprises and interesting twists. This was a great twist; too bad there haven't been more of them.
Now we see why Sul was an idiot for staying in Chunghae. Idiot idiot idiot. He didn't serve any useful purpose there either. If he dies now, score one for Darwin.
Okay, now how did Neung-chang get onto that boat with it crawling with security? Please stop it--we need explanations for things like that. It was utterly ridiculous that he'd be anywhere near the boat, much less on it.
"The air is cold. What are you doing out here?" Well we can't see her breath so it must not be all that cold. (Sorry I keep harping on that.)
Why do people in historicals all think that hovering over a sick person and moaning and wailing will help the situation? Does anybody want to lay there sick in that kind of environment? Sheesh!
And then finally at the end of the episode Madam Jami realizes she can bust JB and the regent for not turning Yi over to the authorities. This is why JB should have realized he had no choice but to turn Yi over himself, even at the cost of Master Sul's life. You can understand why he wanted to save Sul but there was no way it was going to end well. Oh and dragging it out for five days was another dumb move; it just extended the time when the secret was in danger of being leaked.
I was shocked that YM didn't kill Master Jang after Jang revealed he gave the order to shoot Sul. Totally expected YM to kill him right then and there. He'll kill grunts who screw up on duty, without a second thought. Now he's got a #1 subordinate who's shown himself to be willing to scheme behind YM's back. That seems much worse, doesn't it? But at least we won't lose Jeong Hyo Keun yet, so that's a positive!
Overall you'd think that by this point the story would be building towards something big and final, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. And just 19 episodes left. Weird.
