Have to say this one is the strongest episode so far. Still almost entirely fictional but we got some clever story twists, and the whole thing is being written much less annoying-ly lately. Even the Eternal Triangle stuff we got in this one, it was more tolerable. And we finally learned how Jung-hwa went from being captured by locals in China to running her own merchant group. That was quite a story, and it fits--you can accept that what she went through caused the personality change that made her the tougher person we see now.
"No matter how much I drink, I can't get any relief." Well duh, then stop drinking. But we still have the tortured YM and aren't switching over to bad-guy YM, at least not yet. Good to see that.
Once again, the brief scene with Yon and Ha-jin puts the Eternal Triangle to shame. Their scenes are so simple and honest and heartfelt, it's a welcome relief.
Snow is falling but nobody's breath is showing. Oops. Still, credit the producers for coughing up for the snow machine rental. Strange because there have been scenes where breath is showing (and big credit for those).
I really liked that they showed YM putting those pirates to the test. It's one of those more mundane, background things that you'd expect in a pirate situation but certainly not an exciting thing you'd expect to be shown in the series. Showing that kind of stuff fills out a storyline and makes it more satisfying. I remember IYSS in particular was very good about that, showing us some of the day-to-day and slice-of-life things beyond the big battles and dramatic moments. It made the bigger stuff all the more dramatic.
Loved the random psycho running in out of nowhere! That was great. Only thing was, he caved in to YM way too easily. Wish the writers had taken their time and made it more plausible. It was like they needed the character in a big hurry.
Thank goodness Master Sul made it safely to Chunghae...but of course he did, Master Jo was with him! Everything is better when Master Jo is around.
And what was that comment from Jung-hwa about building an inn? So she and Sul's group are both gonna build inns? Ha! That's pretty clever, especially dropping it in now and hinting at it. You just know it will become an issue sooner or later, but when and how, there are lots of possibilities.
Aw come on, this guy's gonna be the king and he's walking around alone at night? Stop it. Just stop it. Way too much of this kind of thing in historicals. Otherwise the ending was good. Especially how YM just froze there, trying to process what he had done when he absolutely needed to get out of there immediately. Very human reaction. The whole episode was livelier than nearly all of the first half was and it kept me interested. If the remaining 22 are like this one, no complaints at all.
