The upward trend continues with this one. Are some new people involved with the writing in the second half of the series? Either way, this was another much better episode; some good moments and very little of the groaner-bad stuff. The series still can't break its addiction to guys doing forward flips over eight-foot-high walls or jumping straight up onto roofs, but finally we've gotten to the story of the real JB and away from the heavy doses of Eternal Triangle and staring into the distance.
Why did Jung-hwa lie to her security officer about knowing JB? What's the big deal? And then later when she says she won't try to bring JB into her life because "Whenever I was near him, he was always unhappy"...Well yeah, cause you were such a massive wet blanket! But that first big scene of hers, wow it did more for her character than the entire first half of the series did. "I want to prove that a person can still accumulate wealth and benefit people with that wealth without resorting to Madam Jami's ways." Finally she has a purpose and a sense of direction, and some spine too. At least we have a reason to care about her now. She's completely different, for the better.
JB visiting his father's burial site, it was a good story idea and could have been very moving. But it wasn't well conceived or written. Too bad. JB just kneeled down and started crying and moaning. It felt forced.
Okay this is a blasphemous question, I know...but how come nobody in historical dramas ever uses fire arrows during the daytime?
"Weren't you paying attention?" Yon, don't be an idiot. She's so small and light, hardly a surprise she got wounded eventually.
What the heck got into YM just reflexively killing those deserters without a second thought? It would be a shame to lose the more interesting side of YM and turn him into a one-dimensional bad guy. It may happen considering how the plot is evolving, but it sure would be a loss.
"We found out who's behind it...it's Jung-hwa." Doink! Okay that was great. Especially with Mak-bong there overhearing it. And then later Madam Jami sitting alone, you could just about see her brain throbbing. That was a good set of images there, very effective. And then the confrontation scene, they way it was staged to emphasize that the two are equals and rivals now, it was very good. That scene put some new life into the series all by itself.
Now Master Sul wants to go to Shilla himself, through pirate-infested waters? What an idiot. No good can come from this. And I didn't like the angle about JB escorting merchant ships to the capital. First of all, he hasn't shown that he can do it. He's never even escorted a rowboat before, but he thinks all of the Mujinju merchants are going to trust huge loads of trading goods with him? Duh! Of course they won't. And he's being dangerously overconfident, considering a lot of his men are still getting seasick.
So the ending was shaky...but overall another much more respectable episode compared to most of the earlier ones.
