Thanks MTR, good to hear another endorsement. I'll get my act together and wrap up the JYS board and then get started on this one.

Thanks Truth, clarifying when it aired, first airing in the US i believe was on the old AZN network. Anyway funny thing even 10 years later my appreciation for it has not diminished, unlike say Jumong which for me now seems ponderous in places .

This actually got more of a reaction than I expected, so definitely we'll go ahead and give it a run. Same deal as JYS: I won't do summaries since all of the episodes are on DF to refer back to...but I'll do a thread for each episode and will maintain a character roster. I'll put in a spoiler thread too, but hopefully it won't be needed, especially since this is an older series.
I'll try to get through one episode every five days or so. The goal will be to end it around the holidays and before Jeong Yak Yong begins. Does that work for everybody? If it's too much we can dial it back; I just would rather not have it overlapping with JYY if possible.
Since it's on DramaFever we don't need to stick to a rigid schedule; if somebody wants to watch ahead a bit or falls behind a little, no big deal. The only asterisk is, and I apologize in advance, there may be some bumps in my schedule coming up and I'll have to do two or three episodes pretty close together. But I'll be as regular as possible and respectful of everyone else's schedule.
I'll try to get the first episode going by next weekend.

Yeah, saw your comment about that in the other thread...and I've chosen to go into denial about it!

Yeah, saw your comment about that in the other thread...and I've chosen to go into denial about it! Hopefully, the rumor isn't true, but there's only 50% chance of the drama happening as of now. If you're missing a "traditional" historical drama worth watching until the next one, which might not even happen at all, I think MBC God of War could be a good choice. Other than the love story and fusion style armor, the drama tries to stay true to history as much as possible. I've never seen a MBC drama that stays true to history as much as this one. It's the complete opposite of JYS where it has correct costumes but turns out to be mostly fictional.

I remember you and others speaking very highly of that one when it aired. The only thing that's kept me from watching it is that I had hoped to see Age of Warriors first, since GOW picks up where AOW left off. I found somebody who has recordings of AOW but 168 episodes is a lot to squeeze in and I just haven't had time for that lately.
Either way maybe we can do a DF viewing of it here next year sometime. Definitely high up on my list to watch--partly because Shin Don picks up where GOW left off.

Definitely high up on my list to watch--partly because Shin Don picks up where GOW left off. Shin Don does not pick up where GOW left off. It takes place about 80 years after the last episode of GOW. God of War doesn't exactly pick up where AOW left off either since the last episode of AOW ends with the death of Choi Chung Heon, but CCH is very much alive and active for the first 14 episodes of GOW. (The drama consists of 56 episodes) The writer of JD has previously said that he wants his next historical to be about Sambyeolcho, which would pick up where GOW left off, so it could be a good idea to watch GOW just in case the Sambyeolcho drama ever happens.

I didn't mean to suggest that it's a direct sequel, only that in the timeline it's the next existing series following GOW. I got more out of watching JD because Shin Don had shown some of what led to the political situation at that time. Convinced me that it was better to watch these things in sequence if possible (although I'll certainly watch GOW even if I can't get to AOW).
Certainly hope the Sambyeolcho idea turns into a series; it would definitely fill in a gap that needs filling chronologically. Hope they don't abandon the traditional historical before it can get made.

I don't know if this could be a reason for you to watch GOW, but the actor who played King Gongmin in Shin Don plays Choi Woo in GOW. Choi Woo was the second military dictator of Choi family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choe_Woo

It just occurred to me that I never noticed the flower decorations on his armor until now.

Oh that's a huuuge reason! Didn't know he was in it. I didn't care for him in DJY but in Shin Don, wow what a performance, one of my three all-time favorites (with YSS and Wongyeong).

Just to warn you, the main character is one of those dull leads surrounded by more interesting characters

Just to warn you, the main character is one of those dull leads surrounded by more interesting characters His acting wasn't that bad. I mean it wasn't fantastic, but it was much better than many other actors who play the lead in historical dramas. He's the son of Kim Musaeng, the legendary actor who played Lee Seonggye in KBS Tears of Dragon, by the way.

Other actor you might recognize is Ahn Jaemo, who played Lee Bangwon in Jeong Dojeon. He plays a character named Yim Yeon, who was the second military dictator to control power after the Choi family regime ended.
