I tried to find more information about the portable clock we saw in this episode, but unfortunately ilseongjeongshuiui got no Google hits in English. Big surprise, huh? It does look like a very clever gadget though. Simple enough for regular people to learn to use, and basic enough to produce in large quantities...
...which only makes the storyline right now all the more bizarre. Shouldn't THIS be what the weird old guy is concerned about? He's worried about the people having too much access to time information, well, what's going to make that happen: one clock versus another in the palace, or everybody having their own portable clock? Duh! Very weak storyline right now, like they're grasping at straws to find a new villain.
One thing I did like in this one was Sejong showing such faith in his subordinates about calculating the eclipse time. Even though they didn't have enough raw data and there doesn't seem to be a clear path to getting it done, his attitude and his belief in them encouraged them to try. That's what a good leader does. Very nice.
That goon who showed up with the disgraced cleric in the last episode, and showed up at Huije's cottage in this one: isn't that Maeda from Jingbirok? When I saw him last episode it drove me nuts--he looked so familiar but I couldn't place him.
And can somebody straighten me out on a couple of the character names? The weird old guy...is he Jo Gwang? And Master Chungbo, was that his name before he lost his title, is that how it worked? But then who is Byeon Daechi? That name was captioned too, when they were first showing the old guy during the funeral in the previous episode, and now I'm confused about who's who. Is Byeon the goon?
Oh dear, middle-aged guys fighting like 21-year-olds. Yes that's typical...but Jeong Dojeon and Jingbirok got it right and showed them fighting like older guys. Kind of hoped the tide had turned. Same with this business about people standing around and chuckling on and on about things that aren't funny. A lot of historicals have some of that but this one is overdoing it.
Oh and why are JYS and Huije just standing there during that sword fight? Throw rocks and dirt at the guy! Something, anything to help Yi Cheon. Sheesh! More of the geniuses being idiots.
The way they wrote this episode, Huije made that entire set of phony data books in a matter of hours, or maybe a day or two. Sloppy writing.
I hate to say it, but this whole story arc about betting everything on an eclipse happening or not happening, it's been done before. In Queen Seonduk. You know, the series that got nailed for being plagiarized.
