Episode 1
There were couple of fun moments if you were a Jeong Dojeon fan.
1. Kim Myeongsu, who played Gongmin in Jeong Dojeon and plays Jang Youngshil's father in this drama, is furious about Lee Seonggye and Lee Bangwon's betrayal of Goryeo dynasty. His character is still loyal to Goryeo dynasty hence the reason why he refuses to work for the new dynasty. This is funny because he is King Gongmin to Jeong Dojeon fans, and makes you think "of course he hates Lee Seonggye and Lee Bangwon, they killed his own son and put an end to his dynasty!"
2. Taejong(Lee Bangwon) saying he had no choice but to kill Jeong Dojeon, because if he hadn't done so, Jeong Dojeon would've killed him first. This scene makes you think back to the last episode in Jeong Dojeon, which is a little awkward since 1st episode takes place just 2 years after the last episode of Jeong Dojeon. LBW aged 30 years in just 2 years! lol

Kim Myeongsu's character being once close friends with Yi Bangwon, fact or fiction?
Finally, watching a good Kdrama I feel like I can breathe again. Wonder if it will last
Interesting contrast with scenarios involving Taejong. GKS Taejong had Prince Choongnyeong's servant tortured in front of him in order to teach him a lesson.
JYS Taejong however, hesitates and stops himself from killing the astrologers when his sons see him.
So that's what he meant when he said emotional side

Episode 1
Hip hip hooray! At least for now the show is being subbed (and quickly). The first episode was pretty good. They seem to be really focusing on the science. However........... they have already introduced the "bad guy" (the rich kid) and future love triangle? When there are so many different ways one can introduce conflict into these stories, why must we always have the same tired plot devises (poor hero is victimized by horrible guy with more power, loves a woman of a higher class who will never be his)? Com'mon you lazy writers. But maybe I'm prejudging where I shouldn't. We'll see.
Anyway, the show is off to a good start.

Its funny seeing Song Il-gook's character's situation when thinking back on Emperor of the Sea, the other Kdrama he starred in. His dilemma is almost similar to Jang Bogo's in that they're slaves trying to escape their lives by boarding a ship to China.
I also find it funny that Youngshil's cousin shares the same name as Jang Heebin's brother, Jang Heejae.

Five episodes in and progress is surprisingly slow and sluggish with this show.

Saw Ep 5 last night, and I'll say this: Kim Young Cheol certainly is the most enjoyably malevolent, chilling actor, and he really does get into the role. It's nice to see the old Taejong back. If they were to cast a Korean Star Wars, he'd be the perfect Emperor.
Oh yeah, and life as a slave in Joseon sucks. That pretty much sums up eps 1-4.

Hey truth, though you said that slaves had better treatment in comparison to the later Joseon period, were there people against Jang Young Shil moving his status up?

Hey truth, though you said that slaves had better treatment in comparison to the later Joseon period, were there people against Jang Young Shil moving his status up? I do not know. There aren't too much information about JYS's life, aside from his scientific accomplishments. My guess is that there may have been people against moving his status up, but even if they did, it wouldn't have been as severe as described in the drama.

Some quick notes on what i've noticed thru Episode 8....vis-a-vis GKS
At least 2 mentions in different episodes of JDJ....Including Taejong's rather blase description of killing him, and his justification (in his own mind) of why he had no choice. I don't recall ANY mention of JDJ in GKS???
The scene in Ep 7 where Crown Prince Sejong (sorry, easier to spell) tells his father "I will NOT be a king like you" was also in GKS, and this was just as powerful...This was so wonderfully acted and filmed!
We again see the proposed spy mission to Ming for the Amarilly Sphere (ep 8)....I don't recall it being presented like this in GKS, maybe I'm wrong. In GKS Young-sil didn't go with the "young master" but with his mentor Choi Hae-son. It will be interesting to see if their relationship, which was as father/son-like in GKS is depicted here.
It's interesting to see the character/actor swaps in this vs. GKS - 2 I've found so far is Yangeyong is now played by the actor who played the later-on leader of the Hall of Worthies and would eventually quit over the Hangul project. Also, King Taejo is portrayed by the actor who was Taejong's Prime Minister in GKS.

In GKS, Jeong Dojeon was actually briefly mentioned when Yangnyeong and Choongnyeong had a meeting with some young scholars about attacking Liaodong, only for Choongnyeong to tell them of the problems regarding the campaign

Thanks! At times watching this, I expect a pitch "For more enjoyment check out our GKS boxed set, available at KBS online" ;-)

Saw eps 9&10 this weekend in LA, and I think they are transitioning back to the 9:30 time slot (thank goodness) starting next weekend. I enjoyed both episodes immensely. 10 was terrific. It is interesting to see the very different portrayal of key events in GKS here in this series version. Especially to someone who always thought of GKS as historically accurate. One thing that struck me in ep10 was how they reintroduced Hwang Hee....My recollection from GKS is that Sejong went at night (undercover) to the village Hwang lived in, and urged him to return to his service with the telling of a parable. Hwang reluctantly agreed. This is 180 degrees opposite of how its handled in ep 10. Also, where in GKS we saw Sejong's (and the Queens) coronation(s), this series gives us the investiture ceremony from the Ming Emperor's emissaries...which I don't believe we saw in Sejong? It was really well filmed in ep 8, loved the crane overhead shots too. Kim Young Chol chews up every scene he's in and looks to be having a great time playing Taejong. It will be interesting to see if his death is handled as it was in GKS. "I will exterminate their entire clan!!!!" Really, who in their right mind would go up against this guy??? Finally, Jo Mal Seng was such a great villian in GKS, he's been reduced to a diplomat/emissary here...while Ha Yeon ( ) is the fierce opponent of Sejong's reforms.

Well, the LA station moved JYS back to the traditional time-slot (9:40-10:30) starting with ep. 11 last night, but they ended up cutting OVER 10 mins of the show!!! And it was one big chunk of the show, not little pieces here and there. Really made no sense. If it wasn't for the online version, I would have been left shaking my head. If they keep this up, I might just give this up and watch it online.
