So they've strung up all sorts of drapes and banners that hang down to the ground and blow around in the night breeze to create a mysterious atmosphere, all to sell the mysterious atmosphere to Gongmin. And there's some smoke blowing around coming from somewhere too. SD tells him to close his eyes and concentrate on Noguk's image. "Can you see her?" Sense her in your heart first, blah blah blah, the image you see will have no tangible form, blah blah blah...and then they trot out Ban Ya dressed like a queen. Gongmin gasps and shouts, he's so stunned...and then starts to talk to her. "Do not leave, my dear...I shall only glance at you from here." And then tells her than once her tomb and shrine are finished, "I shall join you on the other side." She sheds a tear--not sure why--and it startles and worries the king. Then a gust of wind, and she's gone. He runs through and around the banners trying to locate her, but she's gone.
Now the QD's attendants are telling her--reluctantly and uncomfortably--what Gongmin just did and saw. She thinks the whole thing is nonsense and is angry at her son. "Delusion must have engulfed His Majesty!"
Afterwards, Gongmin is with SD and Choseon. This all was supposed to help him, but he looks totally downcast. "It was not enough to appease my grieving soul," he tells them. "Couldn't you show her to me just once more?" SD tries to tell him he can see her in his heart any time he wants to...but that doesn't sell. "Every day, I think of her ten, a hundred times. My yearning for her has never left my soul for a single moment. Just once more, allow me to see her." The pain and desperation in Gongmin's eyes is so pathetic...that SD breaks down crying. And fesses up to the whole thing. "May you behead your humble servant, Sire! I could not bear the torment engulfing Your Majesty, and so I deceived you!" I can't make dead people appear, he admits...and then Choseon jumps in to explain about the orphan girl Ban Ya who grew up to look just like Noguk. Gongmin is utterly stunned. "Then what I witnessed was nothing but a lie?!" SD begs him to stop grieving and unburden himself from his fears that Noguk's soul is wandering without a resting place. Someone so wonderful, who did so many good things in her life, well, "Wouldn't she have left for a better world already? May you renounce this grieving torment, and bid farewell to Her Majesty's soul!" Then there's a long silence...it seems like forever, while we expect Gongmin to order their deaths for orchestrating the stunt...but then finally when he speaks, he doesn't. Tells them not to feel sorry for doing it. "Your efforts turned into rapture for that fleeting instant." He's so utterly broken that he can't be mad at them. "It might have been but an enthralling fancy, but I shall leave with Her Majesty's face engraved in my soul." He stands up and walks out, presumably to head back to Unam Temple. But outside, Ban Ya is standing there. He walks up to her, looking like he's staring at a ghost. Then forces himself to walk away...but he has to turn back around and stare at her again. Asks her name, then walks up to her. He's so amazed by the resemblance that he has to hold her face in his hands. And then suddenly, he hugs her! Desperately and frantically. The resemblance is so uncanny that it profoundly affects him.
Several days later: The palace is buzzing, because the king is returning. The high officials are all happy and relieved; they assume Gongmin has started to heal from his grief.
"He visits that abode almost every day?!" The QD has gotten some interesting news about her son from eunuchs. Gongmin has been visiting somewhere and it's because of a woman. She laughs and says the woman is "lowly petticoat." Well that's not very nice, is it...But she's actually very happy because she thinks he's well enough now for her to work on getting a new queen into the palace.
Gongmin is back in his office...and he's not looking too bad at all, to our surprise. Seems surprisingly calm and back in control of himself. Receives greetings from the officials, who proceed to grumble a bit about all the things SD has been doing in his absence. And surprises us by telling everyone that yes, as SD has said before, he intends to move the capital! "Gaegyeong has no air left to breathe, so we must move our capital elsewhere, if Goryeo's fortunes are to turn the page." The officials aren't happy about this at all, but all they can do is fume silently. A final location hasn't been chosen yet; SD wants Gongmin to go visit a few places. Some angry discussion about getting military cooperation for such visits...which turns into complaining about Choi Young's arrest...which turns into debate about the Liaodong campaign. Not much debate, though; Gongmin says that whatever SD wants is what will be done. More silent fuming. Then Gongmin says his original choice for Noguk's shrine location has to be changed because the ground isn't suitable for construction. And adds that 3,000 monks will be tending to the shrine! Wow. And then: "Until construction of the new shrine is completed, I plan to entrust all state matters to the Prime Minister." Oh that does NOT go over well. No silent fuming; loud protest. And it only gets worse when Gongmin drops a huge bomb: tells SD that "You shall be my Regent." WOW!
The officials leave, complaining bitterly and full of cynicism over their hopes for a renewed, focused Gongmin being dashed.
"This is our last chance to give Goryeo its vigor back," Gongmin tells SD. "Be prepared to do everything to save this country from oblivion." SD leaves, stunned at the faith Gongmin has placed in him. And he thinks back, to being at Noguk's deathbed and their recalling their first meeting, and the advice he gave her...and the promise he and Gongmin made her to work together for Goryeo's benefit...
....and Gongmin is recalling the same thing. "I fulfilled my promise to you, dear," he says to himself. Well no, this probably isn't exactly what she had in mind.
"Regent?!" Well of course Inspector Kim went right to the QD and complained. And of course she explodes in anger.. And the news about SD wanting to move the capital, Kim tells her that and adds, "Know what this can only mean? That he is trying to found a new dynasty!" And tosses in a not-so-veiled threat about how SD cannot be allowed to live.
SD sits down with some of the officials, to deal with how to keep the Directorate's work going while he oversees the capital move. It doesn't last long. He tells them to see the chancellor about any issues that arise, and walks out. That's it.
"Pyeonjo was demeaning, with the air of a monarch." Secretary Gyeong was at the meeting and didn't like SD's attitude. Goes to Lee In Bok to complain, and is so angry he actually suggests sending somebody to kill SD during his travels to scout a new capital location. But Lee angrily rejects any such idea. "Think of how infuriated His Majesty would be." Gyeong is terribly worried about Gongmin being "bedazzled by a damned shrine for a lost soul" that will require 3,000 monks and is draining huge resources for its construction. But Lee insists that "we shall not turn our backs on His Majesty" and wants no further discussion about any of this.
SD tells Won Hyeon that he's going to take his scouting tour on foot! Says it will let him see how the people are living. Won badgers him about making more radical changes in the government but SD ignores him.
Now Secretary Gyeong and Inspector Kim are grumbling about Lee In Bok. And they agree with each other that SD needs to be killed.
Lee In Bok's house: Hey it's Choi Young! Visiting from Gyerim where he was reassigned. He's brought a message from Inspector Kim...from a meeting that Kim had with some of his fellow malcontents. Not clear why Choi has this message...but he wants Lee to read it. So Lee does. Kim is raving about some sort of prophecy made by Master Doseon, one of the monks who helped Wang Guhn establish Goryeo, about a man "who would bring utmost adversity to our country." Says that SD is the man in the prophesy and "so we must confer with His Majesty and remove him before it is too late!" Choi tells Lee that Kim and his men are up to something and that he came to the capital as soon as he got word of it, hoping that Gongmin would agree to removing SD. Okay, so that's his interest in this. It will never happen, Lee answers, and tells him to go back to Gyerim and stay out of trouble. "What Pyeonjo is doing now is the right thing," he says--shocking us in the process--"so we shall not hamper his cause." And adds that "the people are on Pyeonjo's side." Wow to hear that kind of vocal support for SD from Lee is a surprise.
We also see a few moments of Kim's meeting. He's telling his guests that the QD will support whatever he proposes to do. And that she will never allow SD to move the capital and take possession of the throne.
Gongmin has made a trip to the shrine's construction site. The plans are posted...wow it looks elaborate. He's given a tour of the construction in progress. Then he heads to Unam Temple where he asks Noguk's portrait for forgiveness. "My resolve keeps faltering and I continue to seek that young lady. It is nothing but a fancy." Which young lady? But proudly tells the portrait of "the most lavish and opulent shrine in all creation, only for you."
SD and Won and Gong Cheol are walking through the countryside. So Won and Gong are accompanying SD on his scouting trip, obviously. But first they're stopping at a rural temple somewhere, to talk to someone. Hey, it's Master Bou! Jihyo is there too. SD has come to ask Bou to return to the royal temple and become Royal Preceptor again. This is a surprise. But Bou isn't really interested, and then makes an odd comment about SD's breaking his prayer vigil in the shed to "come down the mountains to save the world" and how Bou is trying to make spiritual amends for that. So SD bids Bou farewell and leaves.
Uh-oh, Ban Ya is nauseous. It takes Choseon about four seconds to realize what may be going on. "Isn't this morning sickness?" Well no, it looks like it's still evening...or maybe it's early morning. Whatever: "You are pregnant with His Majesty's child!" Outside, Gongmin has arrived on horseback for another visit...but this time he looks like he has some sort of inner voice telling him not to go in. Maybe guilt feelings, which we could see when he was talking to Noguk's portrait. He reluctantly turns around and leaves, with his personal guards following him.
"You will give birth to our future king." Choseon couldn't be more excited. But why is Ban Ya crying and looking so completely forlorn? "Did you abandon me?" She wonders to herself. I guess she's wondering why Gongmin isn't visiting tonight.
Gongmin reaches the palace...and changes his mind again. Turns around and heads briskly back to Choseon's, leaving his confused escort scrambling to keep up.
"She is pregnant? Ban Ya is pregnant with my child?" Gongmin is glaring at Choseon, who beams as she tells him it's true. Suddenly he flashes anger. "And who gave her consent?" Huh? "There is no way! My child?! I haven't laid a hand on her once!" He's denying it? Choseon is shocked and frightened. Never mention this again, he warns her angrily, or I'll have your tongue cut out. He storms away, mounts his horse and shouts, "Anyone defaming Princess Noguk's name shall perish by my blade!" It's the guilt, isn't it. He gallops away, and Choseon is so overwhelmed that she falls to the ground. Ban Ya is watching from off to the side, silently.
Next day: The babes are back. They're all outside the QD's house, waiting for the chance to be introduced to the king. Inside, Gongmin is happy and laughing with his mother. "And what is so troublesome about that, Mother? The Queen has left a void, so we shall proclaim a new one." Well THIS is odd--why is he so cooperative and agreeing to meet these women. His mother is grateful and relieved that he's not making trouble about this: "The anxiety was suffocating this old matron."
Gongmin's apparent abrupt change of heart on this is great news to Inspector Kim. Why? He tells Lee In Bok, "Doesn't this prove he changed
his mind about Pyeonjo?" Huh? Hardly.
Now we see Gongmin being introduced to the women. He's visibly uncomfortable, but he is trying, give him credit. And he has good reason to be uncomfortable, because his mother is giving each woman a different sales pitch, like she's a market hawker. Ugh!
Choseon still looks shaken from last night. Park Seobang is urging her to have SD recalled from his trip to stop a new queen from being named. Obviously they want Ban Ya to be named queen.
Rumors of treason are being whispered around the palace! What's going on? Wait, it's one of the guys who was at Inspector Kim's meeting. His name is Kang Won Bo and the meeting was the first time we met him. He's whispering to Lee Chun Bu (I think that's Lee Chun Bu).
Seogyeong: Hey, it's Lee Seong Gye, come to visit SD. Seogyeong is farther north than Gaegyeong, and it's one of the cities being considered for the new capital. So it makes sense that they would meet here. Actually SD summoned him here for a report on the Ming/Yuan conflict and the situation in Liaodong. LSG says his troops are ready to go and awaiting the command to attack. Some frank discussion between them about the king's distrust of the military, because of Jo Il Shin and Kim Yong, but LSG reassures him that "The Goryeo army pledges fealty to His Majesty and him alone." Interesting scene. These two seem very comfortable with each other and there's mutual respect between them.
But the meeting is cut short, because someone has arrived from the capital. SD goes outside to greet the arrival. It's Kang Won Bo. Lee Chun Bu obviously sent him up there, to tell SD of Inspector Kim and Secretary Gyeong plotting treason.
Now Kang is before a furious Gongmin, with Lee Chun Bu hovering nearby. Kang tells the king about the meeting he attended. "They were plotting to assassinate the Prime Minister, and after gaining control of the palace...." He gets no further because Gongmin goes ballistic: "Those traitors! Kim Won Myeong! I gave him his position because he was a relative of mine, but now he is plotting to slay his ruler?!" Poor Kang is groveling on the floor, begging for his life (but he's the one spilling the beans here, so they shouldn't be scaring him like this!). Gongmin wants to know exactly who was at this meeting. "I shall capture them all and tear their limbs apart!"
Inspector Kim, he must have gotten word that something leaked because we see him running around in an absolute panic.
Secretary Gyeong is walking through the palace complex and is suddenly grabbed and arrested by a soldier.
Inspector Kim runs into the QD's front yard, pushing aside several female attendants, and falls at her doorstep begging for her to save his life.
Secretary Gyeong is hauled away, screaming and resisting, by a squad of soldiers.
Gongmin is sitting in his office, shaking with anger. "You vile traitors...I shall prove to you who I am once and for all!"
Now the QD's attendants are telling her--reluctantly and uncomfortably--what Gongmin just did and saw. She thinks the whole thing is nonsense and is angry at her son. "Delusion must have engulfed His Majesty!"
