Gongmin is still in that secluded room with the rest of the royals. He's itchy to get out of there, unwilling to put the rest of their lives at risk. But they all fully intend to protect him at the cost of their own lives--even his mother. The queen, though, isn't with them; she's helping with the ruse. And Gongmin is frantic with worry over it. But now the candles are dimmed and the room goes dark. The wait begins.
Noguk and Pyeonjo are outside the temple, surveying the scene. Choi's troops won't be here for quite a while, unfortunately. And Pyeonjo's a little worried because "some of the people who remained behind are acting suspiciously" so he tells Noguk that she should find save haven herself when Kim Yong's troops approach. And they tell each other that should anything happen to them, the other should stand with the king and support his goals.
Gaegyeong: Kim Yong is drinking heavily. Interesting--seems like the pressure of what he's about to do is starting to eat at him big-time. Maybe not second thoughts, but guilt. But then it passes and now some evil laughing.
Kim Rim has led troops to the outskirts of the temple. They're trying to figure out where the king's quarters would be so they know where to attack.
Supervisor Gyeong is trying to enter the temple and take refuge. But Inspector Kim grabs him by the arm. "Would losing our lives for His Majesty bring us any reward?" So he wants to flee, apparently...
...but inside, Chancellor Hong and Lee In Bok are waiting inside, resigned to their fate and facing it as bravely as possible. Lee In Bok steps outside for a breather and actually offers Pyeonjo his support in the future if they survive this. And laughs about how Kim Yong is actually unifying the country and will end up "leaving a meritorious legacy" after all.
Time to prepare the king's berth for An Dochi to go to sleep. Noguk says she'll sleep next to him. Has to be that way to make the ruse look good, she insists. And she's right of course.
Back in Gaegyeong, a drunken, tottering Kim Yong emerges from the king's quarters and orders his men to go set fire to the temple and then kill the king and everyone else there. Including the queen: "Before she returns to her motherland in refuge, we must sparkle this soil with the blood of that imperious slattern!" Sheesh. But his men standing there, they're remaining silent--not exactly responding with enthusiasm. Kim reminds them of the Yuan emperor's order...but will it matter?
Kim Rim gives the signal and his troops move out.
An Dochi is handling all of this incredibly well. Smiling, remembering the best times of his years with the queen, and completely unfazed by the approaching danger. Noguk actually buckles and tells him to run away and save himself...but An simply tells her he hopes she and the king can bear a child someday. Then suddenly arrows fly into the room...
...and it's on. Outside the temple a wild sword battle. Eunuchs are giving the soldiers all they can handle...and now even the queen comes out and wields her sword--very foolish but she handles herself quite well, until she's overpowered and forced to flee. Then Kim Rim and a few of his men manage to break into the king's chamber, push Lady Kim aside and kill the "king," who's sleeping under a sheet. They go wild with delight. Nearby, another soldier finds the room where the chancellor is sitting alone. Lee In Bok didn't make it back in time. The soldier apologizes politely to the chancellor, and then kills him.
Now outside, a tense confrontation. Lee In Bok is bravely staring down dozens of Kim's soldiers, outside the room where the royal females (and Gongmin) are sitting in the dark. "Is murdering our guiding light not enough for you, moving you to harm all the ladies of the palace?! Convey my words to Lord Anseong. He slew the King and fulfilled his wishes, so how can he dare to harm more innocent lives? Leave this place at once!" They stare at him, frozen in place...while from inside, the king and the royals hear every word...again Lee challenges them: "Leave this place at once!" No good; they start to advance...but now what's that noise? Monks chanting! And look who turns the corner: It's Deokun masquerading as Master Bou! Jihyo and a group of other monks are behind him. They announce that since the king is dead, they've come to sit with his body and offer final prayers for his soul. They head straight for the room where An Dochi lies dead. Well THAT certainly stops the soldiers; they back down and threaten no one else--looks like those monks literally put the fear of God into them. In fact, now Kim Rim doesn't even want to burn down the temple, at least not yet. He tells his men to set up a huge bonfire as a mission-accomplished signal to Kim Yong. (Maybe he thinks Kim can just torch the place himself when he arrives.) And we do get one piece of good news: the queen managed to flee and hasn't been found yet.
A grieving Lady Kim tends to An Dochi's body as the monks sit nearby and chant for his soul.
Gaegyeong: Kim Yong sees the fire and tells his troops that they're to go to the temple and kill anyone remaining. They all head out, with Kim and four other officers on horseback leading them. They reach the palace gate and find it closed. Why? Kim shouts that it be opened--"We need to head for Heungwang Temple, and rescue His Majesty!"--and the gate is opened...just long enough for the five on horseback to exit, before a line of fire is lit on the ground behind them and the gate bangs shut again! What's going on here? Kim looks at the scene behind him and his impatience gets the better of him. "Don't let this daunt you!", he orders his officers; "Let us head for the temple!" So they charge ahead. But now on the wall above the gate, a squad of loyal Goryean soldiers is pointing flaming arrows at the confused soldiers trapped inside. The officer in charge shouts down to the men that the king is safe after all, to drop their weapons, go home and wait for the king's orders and they won't be punished. Well these poor slobs are so confused by now that they're only too happy to let their spears clang to the ground and walk away. Actually a hilarious moment in the middle of all this tension.
On the road to the temple, Kim Yong and his officers meet Kim Rim and his men heading back to Gaegyeong. Kim Yong's joy at hearing of the king's death is only momentary, because he learns the queen is still at large and he wants her dead too. He leads his officers onward.
Now they've arrived; they dismount and approach the temple. Someone steps outside to greet them. Choi Yeong! Surprise! And now Kim Rim and all of his men, obviously captured on the way home, are thrown down in front of Kim Yong, bound and captive. Kim tries to bluff his way out of it, making a phony show of fury about traitors trying to harm the king. Makes such a dramatic phony show that he takes his sword and kills the soldier who slew the chancellor. And then without a moment's hesitation he kills his nephew! Good heavens! Drops the sword and proceeds to run into the temple, raving hysterically and shedding crocodile tears. Choi lets him pass, with a wry smile...
...and inside Kim Yong falls to the floor, prostrate with "grief"...only to realize that four people are in the room staring at him. Pyeonjo, Lee In Bok, Queen Noguk...and the king. Gongmin tosses a sheathed dagger to him. "I should tear your limbs apart with my own hands, but to reward you for all the days spent by my side in Yanjing, I shall allow you an honorable burial." Kim ignores the dagger and keeps trying to bluff his way out of it, so Choi and three of his men drag him outside...and skewer him with their four swords simultaneously. We can see that this is tough on Gongmin, just like it was when Jo Il Shin was executed; he still recalls Kim's loyalty long ago. Outside, Kim gradually fades out, spouting venom about Gongmin's impending removal from the throne, until even Choi has had enough of the baloney and finishes him off with one last blow. Thank goodness.
Days later: Things are all cleaned up and back to normal in the palace. Inspector Kim is in a big hurry to see the queen dowager...but he can't right now, because the queen and Princess Deoknyeong are visiting her. And get this--no it's not an illusion--the old battleaxe is actually being nice to Noguk! "I saw you in a new light," she tells her daughter-in-law with a smile and laughter. "You found survival in the midst of such dire conflict." She even owns up to being unkind to Noguk in the past--"You must have resented me for a long time"--and says she'll stay out of palace affairs from now on and leave the queen's work to the queen. Well talk about miracles...but she does mention the grandson thing, nudge nudge. "Just think of it as an old woman's selfish vagary, and forget it. There is no heir to the throne, so I was just worried our bloodline could end up in shambles." Ugh--guess she couldn't quit cold turkey.
The king is in his office, sharing a meal with four guests: Pyeonjo, Lee In Bok, Choi Young and Lee Seong Gye. They discuss the Yuan edict proclaiming Prince Deokheung the King; Choi assures Gongmin that they're ready for whatever trouble might ensue. And as for Pyeonjo, whose hermitage in the shed was interrupted..."So is Pyeonjo a monk or a layman?" Gongmin laughs as he asks. And decides it's time for Pyeonjo to have a new name to replace his Buddhist name now that he's apparently going to play a big role in the government (which isn't stated explicitly but we're getting that feeling). "Your father's name was Shin, if I recall correctly? And as your given name, how would "Don," the "light kindling the entire creation" be? Shin Don." Pyeonjo says "I shall gleefully accept it." They toast Jung Se Woon's and An Dochi's memory. "You people are all I have left," Gongmin tells the four. "May you join forces in protecting me."
"You must be the one who saves us all!" Oh dear, Inspector Kim is already whining to the QD about Pyeonjo again. She's not happy to hear the queen got involved in bringing Pyeonjo back, but tells Kim not to worry about it. Wow, maybe she really is going to keep her nose out of state affairs.
Princess Deoknyeong is still concerned about Pyeonjo's slave status and the disruption it will cause if he's brought into the court. She visits Noguk and tells her so. "Riches are all the officials will need to be appeased, but even all creation wouldn't quench a slave's thirst for power." Wow, that is NOT like Deoknyeong, to say something so directly disparaging. The coarseness of it is almost shocking, coming from her mouth.
Choi Young and Lee Seonggye leave the dinner. The king liked you, Choi happily tells Lee; now "You must pledge fealty to His Majesty." Choi leaves...but what's that look on Lee's face?
Pyeonjo has stayed behind. Wait...Shin Don has stayed behind. Gongmin tells him, "I shall proclaim you my guardian, and accord you a home in the palace." But SD has a request. "Grant me riches." Huh? Did we just hear correctly? "Accord me all the market's trade rights. Ginseng and tea are the backbone of the market's trade. If you allow me the right to trade tea and ginseng at the market, in three years I shall become the richest man in Goryeo." Good heavens, has the monk become a rampant capitalist? Gongmin is surprisingly un-surprised by this, and thinks it's funny. "I thought I had a most meritorious mentor guiding me, but, in the end you are a shrewd merchant?" Done, Gongmin says, with a big laugh, to SD's great happiness.
SD leaves, and finds Lee In Bok waiting outside. "Those can't be your true intentions," Lee says, apparently having heard the whole thing from outside. SD answers, "Should I reinstate the Directorate instead?" But he's not going to do that and in fact tells Lee In Bok that "I shall leave all court affairs to Your Excellency." Then he goes off on a strange tangent about how the military officers are a potential danger to Gongmin's throne, and how after Gongmin has seen all three of his old Yanjing allies die, he'll look over his remaining allies and wonder who's next. "His Majesty doesn't trust me," SD says, but adds, "Would someone like me lust after authority? Enjoying riches shall suffice." And with that he walks away from Lee. A bizarre, rambling statement (that may have had subtitling issues; not certain).
And on the way out of the palace complex, look at this, officials and soldiers are actually bowing to him! Wow, what a sight. Who'd have ever thought we'd see this.
Choseon's house: The citizen-soldiers and monk-soldiers are having a celebration. Won Hyeon is chomping away at chicken...and tempts Deokun into doing the same, naughty naughty. Inside, Choseon and SD are enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Choseon sighs. "Her Majesty is really something. She even opened those steadfast gates trapping your soul." SD smiles. "Did that dishearten you this much?" Yes, she admits, it did. "But what can I do? Our ties in this world had already been cut long ago." Finally some frankness from one of them! But then SD changes the subject: "I must make some money," he says, "and feed our people with it." Explains about the trading rights. Tells her he wants her help using them to make money. Okay, now this starts to make a little sense; he's doing an end run around the government structure to gain the wealth needed to help the people.
Now look at this: SD has come to Inspector Kim's home. And Kim not only invites him in but gives him the head seat. SD pleasantly but unmistakably scolds Kim for bailing out and fleeing rather than helping protect the king at Heungwang Temple, and suggests that Kim is lucky he's still alive and hasn't been executed! Which Kim, to his credit, agrees is true. Then SD tells Kim that he's to turn over half of his fortune to the state (probably generous since most of it was probably ill-gotten). Kim denies having any fortune: "I have always lived off the meager salary the court accorded me." But can't look SD in the eye when he says it. Okay, SD says, I'll have to tell the king...which changes Kim's mind in a hurry. Kim isn't happy but he has no choice.
The queen dowager barges in on Queen Noguk. "You send Pyeonjo to threaten me?" Huh? What's she all upset about? "All the fortune I entrusted to Kim Won Myeong was to be used only in case of an emergency." Ohhhh, now we understand; we had heard comments previously about the QD's supposed ill-gotten riches...she must have entrusted their care to Inspector Kim. Noguk smiles, completely unrattled. "If it's a fortune to be used by the royal family for emergencies, then there is no reason why you should hold it any longer." The QD is reduced to stammering incoherently.
Next SD visits Master Bou...and brings him an unwelcome message: "You have no right to be our Royal Preceptor, Seunim." So resign.
