At first the king and Choi are a little doubtful of Seonggye's sincerity, but he convinces them. Okay, the king says, go and arrest them. "But I will not give a royal order. I will deny it if you fail. Will you still do it?" Yep, they'll do it. Seonggye even offers his son Banggwa as Choi's bodyguard. "If I show other intentions, kill him on the spot." They divide up the job: Choi will get Im and Yeom; Seonggye will go after Lee In Im. It starts first thing in the morning.
Lee In Im and the flunkies got word that Choi was in the palace meeting with the king. They wonder why Seonggye even let him in at all. So Im and Yeom head off to go ask him why. Later they return with news that Seonggye isn't at his guard post. Lee is very suspicious now. Tells Im to go ask the king what he and Choi discussed. "Don't miss a single expression on his face." But when Im goes there, he's told by eunuchs that the king isn't here, and "seemed upset after Choi Yeong and Lee Seonggye left." The news that Seonggye was in on the meeting, he actually starts twitching upon hearing it. "That country boy must be up to something," he mutters.
Under cover of night, Seonggye's private troops are arriving at his estate. Dressed as a large merchant caravan, with their armor and weapons in boxes. Lady Kang is very worried; potentially sees her whole world falling apart. And Seonggye is worried to, for his daughter who married into Lee In Im's family. But JD shows up and tries to comfort and encourage him.
Now In Im knows something ugly is brewing. Tells Im to take his private soldiers and attack Choi Yeong's house! And tells Yeom to have the royal guards arrest all of Choi's political party members.
Dawn comes and Yeom readies his guards for their job. But it's too late; here come generals Bae and Byeon with their troops. A brief battle and Yeom is captured and arrested. Same with Im; he's headed towards Choi's house with his private troops but suddenly he's surrounded by Choi and his troops. A brief battle that ends with Choi himself knocking Im's sword out of his hand (wow, for an old dude he can really bring it) and Im is arrested. The two of them are taken to the royal jail, just as Jo Ban is being released. "The heavens didn't abandon me," Jo tells Yeom has he grabs him by the collar.
Lee In Im doesn't look so calm now. "Why is there no word? Were they too late?" And guess what, here come Seonggye's troops up the road...and now they're in his front yard. Seonggye persuades In Im's guards to drop their swords without a fight, and in moments he and Jiran and Banggwa are inside the house. Lee is ready to give up, but stunned at how it all unfolded. "Never trust anyone," Seonggye tells him; "I learned that from you." "A fine student form a fine teacher," In Im replies...but things quickly deteriorate into shouting and suddenly In Im starts coughing up blood again...and goes unconscious. A physician is ordered summoned.
Near the Ming border: Mongju is supposed to be an envoy to the Ming emperor but they won't let him in the country! Never mind, though, because a messenger arrives with word of the rebellion and an order for him to return home.
Narration tells us that in December 1387, Jo Ban's arrest triggered everything we've seen here. But later there was controversy about how to settle the matter....
The queen dowager Jeongbi is urging Choi to show mercy and not to kill the entire families of the three officials. This is a Buddhist nation, she reminds him, so we should follow Buddha's teachings of generosity and compassion. He's unmoved, reminding her that the families benefitted from their crimes just like they did. But the queen is there too, and when she asks for mercy for her uncle...
Seonggye has heard rumors that Lee In Im won't be punished at all! He confronts Choi about them, and Choi says they're true. In Im is old and sick and won't live much longer anyway, and was "a loyal servant for 14 years. I want to be generous one last time." LS is bitterly disappointed; gets up and walks out without a word.
"The old tiger is trying to ruin things." JD is with Bangwon and isn't pleased. "He's happy with a small victory. The time to be most cautious is when you think you've won." He wonders if In Im bit his tongue to cough up blood and fake the unconscious state he's still in. Seriously? He's so suspicious, he goes to Choi and asks to get a look at In Im's condition. Choi owes him one...so JD is allowed to see In Im lying in his bed, still unconscious and unresponsive. But wait--JD notices fresh dirt and scuffs on In Im's shoes next to his bed! No, it couldn't be...could it? On his way home he sees a huge group arriving: the king and his son with all their retinue. At this time in the evening?
First the boy goes in to visit Lee, and then the king orders everyone out of the room and talks to the unconscious Lee. Trying to clear his conscience. "I did it to survive. I relied on you. I'm so nervous because you're ill. Don't be too disappointed in me. I was afraid of Im Gyeongmi and Yeom Heungbang." He turns to leave. "It was a foolish thing to do." He turns back around, and In Im is sitting up and glaring at him!! "You buried your own grave," In Im tells him; "Don't you know what happens to the king when military men have power? In moments the king is in a panic. "I told you many times," In Im says calmingly. "I will protect you." And gives him instructions that we don't hear.
JD pays Nam Eun a visit and asks a favor. Nam is in charge not only of the stables but also of the storage building where the king's gama is kept. "See if his majesty secretly goes to Lee In Im's house. If he goes there again, it must mean he has someone to talk to."
The next council meeting: Choi is in charge; no Lee In Im and no flunkies. We learn that Im and Yeom confessed that Lee In Im concocted the treason plot, which is more than enough cause for execution...but Choi is firm that Lee won't be executed. Which gets Seonggye more expressively angry than we've ever seen him. "The people are still angry! The country was ruined because of that wretch. All those people who suffered because of him--I want to comfort them. Is that so wrong? Punish him!" He's shouting and even shaking a little. But then they all get word that the king wants to see them, right now. So they go, and he tells them he wants all this settled right now. And breaks the news that he's going to pardon In Im! "He is my father. How can I punish my father? You will abide by my wishes." And now in flashback we see In Im telling the king to pardon him, so that "I can then return to the council and gain full power."
Bangwon tells JD what just happened. JD knows Lee isn't unconscious and says "his counterattack has begun." And back at Lee's house, we see him sitting up on his bedside and looking alert. And now here's the evil laugh.
