Lee In Im's flunkies go ballistic as soon as Lee Seonggye proposes the idea. And Lee In Im says it would lower the nation's status since Ming never formally requested him. Let's think about it and meet again tomorrow, he says, and the tense meeting is adjourned. Later, Lee Seonggye tells his fellow generals on the council that if Lee In Im doesn't return from Ming, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing! "He must be eliminated for Goryeo to survive." But Choi Yeong shoots that down immediately and scolds him for suggesting it.
JD still has some of Yeom Heungbang's bribe money left and uses it to bribe the guards holding Cheonbok prisoner. Then JD sucker-punches him! (not cool) We learn that Cheonbok was arrested for a good reason--he acted as a guide for the pirates. Which is why he's wearing their clothes. You should have let them kill you rather than agree to help them, JD says angrily...but a sobbing Cheonbok says he just did what he had to do to survive. And insists it's not his fault; it's Goryeo's fault for not being strong enough to stop them. Surprisingly, the idea stuns JD and he realizes he agrees with it. "You're right. It's not your fault. It's the country 's fault for not being able to protect innocent lives." So he forgives Cheonbok and decides to take him to reunite with his sister.
Yangji brings JD's wife more sewing work from the temple. But JD's wife says this will be the last work she does. She seems uncomfortable with Yangji's familiarity with her husband..
Next morning: we see Lee Seonggye with two of his sons: Banggwa and Bangui. A third, Bangwon, is out hunting...and we see him and a friend in the forest hunting, just as JD and Cheonbok are walking through the same forest. Bangwon, seeing Cheonbok still in the pirate outfit, assumes he's an enemy and shoots him! Right in the midsection. He's severely hurt. Bangwon's friend says he won't live; JD disagrees and wants to get him to a doctor right away. But Bangwon takes out his dagger and stabs him! "I'm sorry," he says; "Have an easy passage to eternity." It was for his own good, he tells JD. Of course JD goes ballistic at him, but quickly the friend's sword is at JD's throat. JD doesn't back down, though, so Bangwon walks away, tossing some silver at the body for a burial shroud.
Choi Yeong tries to mediate the council dispute but Lee Seonggye won't participate. Instead he goes to the scholars and asks for their support. They're all in favor...except Jeong Mongju. "Take a step back," he advises a shocked Lee. What you suggest would hurt the nation's dignity (which, ironically, is just what Lee In Im said). Plus, if Ming kills Lee In Im, it will set a terrible precedent and everybody will be trying to get Ming to take out there political rivals. "We can't let one corrupt minister do this to us."
So Lee Seonggye goes to the council meeting and eats humble pie, withdrawing the suggestion. Later he gets a scolding for the king for being unkind to Lee In Im. And when he tells Lee In Im that "I lost this time," Lee says there won't be another time. Hmmmm....
JD goes to the temple to tell Yangji what happened...but before he can, she says she's leaving the temple to go back near where Sojaedong was, to pray for the dead and look for her brother. She's sure Cheonbok is alive. He doesn't have the heart to tell her what happened, so he leaves...and finds his wife walking up to the main yard with her finished sewing work. She's disgusted with him and suspects him of cheating on her, so he tells her Yangji's leaving.
But now she tells the old woman who runs the place that she's leaving because she's in love with JD. The old woman won't allow her to go. JD's wife is still at the temple, and she's outside the room and hears it all.
That evening: Lee Seonggye and Lee Jiran are totally, totally drunk. Singing like only drunk people can sing. Mongju walks in and is shocked, but ends up drinking some with them...and at home the next morning, wakes up to find Seonggye checking on him and wondering if he had done anything stupid last night. JM mentions he's going to look for JD...and oh guess what, Seonggye knows where he is.
JD takes his wife to the temple...and then they take Yangji to Cheonbok's burial mound. Then JD's wife says she's decided he can take Yangji as a second wife! But he refuses outright. Then JM shows up; tells JD he wants to get him on the council. But JD doesn't want that...and he disagrees with JM's position on sending Lee In Im to Ming. The way the country is right now, its dignity isn't worth worrying about, he says. He's totally bitter about Sojaedong and Cheonbok's death. JM looks at him like he doesn't know him. And in a sense, he doesn't. JD's experiences have changed him.
A religious ceremony at the temple, to pray for famine victims. Mrs. Lee wanted to come and she brought her husband along. Then in the middle of it, some guy starts screaming about how Lee Seonggye is the Maitreya, come to save the nation! What the heck? Narration tells us that this was a time in history when people were waiting for a messiah to come, and false prophets were being executed. But wait a minute...what's Im Gyeongmi doing there in the background? Later he tells Lee In Im, "It went as planned." So this was part of something he's planning.
JD's wife tells him what she overheard at the temple. So he goes there and confronts Yangji. We learn that the old woman relented and is letting her leave. He tells her they have a teacher/student relationship, which is much like a parent and child. He's trying to let her down easy. He politely bids her goodbye...but just then, a commotion outside: the old woman is being taken away by soldiers! And then they grab Yangji too.
