The Jajewi try to flee the scene but the troops brought by Lee In Im intercept them and a huge battle ensues right there in the palace yard. Doesn't last long; just by sheer numbers the Jajewi are defeated and Hong Ryun taken away to prison. Lee goes inside the palace to where King Gongmin lies dead, and spots the appointment order for Jeong Dojeon that Gongmin was writing. He grabs it and tosses it into a fire. He mutters to the dead king about how loyal he was for so long, only to be cast aside. "I'm going to make the king of this country my dog."
A subsequent morning: Execution day for Hong Ryun and other Jajewi. As Lee confronts him one final time, Hong wants to know who sent him the note alerting him that Gongmin had ordered him killed. Lee doesn't bat an eye. "It has been determined you made that up to avoid execution." And now we know that Lee set the whole thing up himself. What a scheme. Yikes. Hong and the others are executed.
We see Gongmin lying in state. All of the ministers and everyone else in the capital, they're all wearing white and grieving loudly and painfully.
Next morning: State council meeting, with the queen dowager sitting on the throne. She's actually praising Lee for bringing troops and preventing the Jajewi attack from possibly getting worse! Rewards him with a title and a land grant. Then an argument breaks out about naming a successor king. The QD wants the royal family to have time to discuss it. But Lee claims that Gongmin told him he was about to name his son Monino crown prince, and he intends to see that Gongmin's "wish" is fulfilled.
Later, the QD and PM Gyeong are discussing whether or not Lee's claim is true, when they get a shock: Jeong Dojeon presents them with the muildo painting that Gongmin gave him, and says that Gongmin told him he wasn't naming Monino to the throne. And said that Gongmin had accepted his appeal and was about to start reorganizing and reforming the government. His story is so credible (and he has the muildo so he did talk to the king) that they arrange a morning meeting with the royals and officials tomorrow to compare JD's and Lee's claims and decide who's telling the truth. They believe JD.
Government troops are sent to JD's house to protect him until tomorrow; a wise move. JD's wife is terrified of what her husband has gotten himself into--but he won't even explain it to her.
Choi Yeong and his army on Jeju Island get word of Gongmin's assassination. Choi and his subordinates immediately head for home, exhausting themselves to get there ASAP. Lee gets advance word of their rush home and goes to the QD and PM Gyeong to suggest that Choi might be planning treason, with the vast forces he commands, and tells the QD you'd better name a king before he does! She doesn't buy it, but Lee has somehow managed to get his hands on the cut-off heads of the Tamna government leaders--seized from the Yuan army--and presents them to her with the lie that it's a message from Choi. So now she's worried....
Next, Lee goes and finds the boy Monino, crying by his father's body. The boy doesn't want to be king and tells Lee so. Lee leans in closely. "You will die if you don't become the king." Geez! I'll protect you, he assures the boy.
The QD and PM Gyeong start to despair over the apparent lack of an alternative. They think about summoning Lee Seonggye and his forces to counter Choi...but the QD rules it out because Lee is "a descendant of Yuan collaborators."
The next morning, JD steps outside to head for the big meeting--but the soldiers won't let him leave! They have orders now to keep him there. What's going on?
The QD has given in, that's what. She agrees with Lee In Im to allow Monino to become king, in exchange for her being allowed to help the boy with national affairs. (Not sure yet if this is as a formal regent.) So it's a done deal.
Council meeting: The QD presents Monino as the new king--just as Choi Yeong walks in. Choi doesn't believe the boy is king--says the royal family would never have agreed to such a thing--and dares the boy to give him an order. He scares the boy so badly that all the boy can do is mutter, "Please spare me." Ministers turn and look at each other with disappointment; THIS is their king? But king he is, and once Choi realizes it he kneels in submission. Cheers for the new king ring out--but Monino is so traumatized by now that he wets his pants. Poor kid.
Evening: Gongmin's funeral procession. JD watches from a distance, drunk and despondent.
Days later: JD has submitted his resignation from the Sungkyunkwan; he's so devastated that he wants to leave the capital and settle somewhere else. Jeong Mongju (who apparently is his boss) refuses the resignation and brings him stunning news: the QD, over the strong objection of the Lee faction, has named him Supervisor of Rites! A highly important government position. Don't give up, Mongju encourages; "The fight isn't over yet."
