Starting Fri, 12/13/2013, Niles is showing 2 Korean films: Commitment being extended (although not getting a great turnout, says the theater); and, Friend, The Great Legacy. RSK release date: 11/14/2013. Runtime: 124 mins. Genre: I'd say, Gangster. asianwiki.com/Friend,_The_Great_Legacy description: "Sung-Hoon (Kim Woo-Bin) was raised by his mother and doesn't have any memories of his real father. His childhood was miserable, surrounded by his mother's gangster friends. He eventually became a gang member himself. He is now imprisoned for fighting against other gang members in a Buddhist temple. "Meanwhile, Joon-Seok (Yu Oh-Seong) has been in prison for almost 17 years and is set for release in the near future. A woman comes to the prison and requests to talk with Joon-Seok. The woman was in his circle of friends during his high school days. She informs Joon-Seok that her son Sung-Hoon is an inmate in the same prison. She asks Joon-Seok to protect her son from other gang members. Joon-Seok soon takes Sung-Hoon under his wings in prison. "When Joon-Seok is released from prison he learns that Eun-Ki (Jeong Ho-Bin) has gotten rid of his men and now dominates the gang which Joon-Seok's father (Joo Jin-Mo) started. Joon-Seok plots to take back control of his gang. "Meanwhile, Sung-Hoon is released from prison and works for Joon-Seok in his power struggle against Eun-Ki. Joon-Seok and Sung-Hoon are both unaware that Joon-Seok once ordered the murder of Sung-Hoon's father (Jang Dong-Gun) many years ago." ***An interesting note from www.koreanfilm.or.kr/jsp/films/index/filmsView.jsp?movieCd=20137044: "Strong Start for Gangster Sequel KWAK Kyung-taek’s much-anticipated follow-up to his 2001 hit gangster film[,] Friend[,] opened domestically on Thursday, November 14 and is already igniting interest in international markets. During this month’s American Film Market (AFM), distributor Lotte Entertainment announced sales to the US (Dreamwest), Japan (Nikkatsu) and Taiwan (AV-Jet). 18 years after the deat... - See more at: www.koreanfilm.or.kr/jsp/films/index"/filmsView.jsp?movieCd=20137044#sthash.QHutJaVa.dpuf" My added note: the latter link to 'read more' is coming up "not found" as well as when cutting and pasting.

Thanks guys for all the feed back-- here is "the rest of the story"-- so I went to the mall early to do some Christmas shopping (Ticket to see TOP was my present to me from me! ) and as I walked around I kept getting more and more excited, anxious, ect. I stopped at 11:30 figuring some lunch before the movie would help, I glanced at my watch and it said 11:30, movie time was 12:45-- so time to dropped bags off at the car, looked at the watch, still plenty of time, checked a Claire's and found a pair of Hello Kitty suspenders (Merry Christmas to me- again! ), checked the watch again (getting more excited), realized watch wasn't movimg, had a slight "panic" , found a store clock, ok-- only 12:15, walked quickly over the theater (thinking long line of TOP fans waiting, not ) got ticket, got popcorn/drink -- got to stare at TOP on the big screen-- finally happy Monday morning someone at work asked me how my weekend was, I said AWESOME-- told him why-- yeah, now I think they really think I am nuts (who else listens to Korean music and watches k-dramas???) Glad you guys are here to keep me sane

Since I haven't seen it mentioned here and if any of you missed it I have to bring it up. There is a great film written and directed by Korean-American director, So Yong Kim called "Treeless Mountain". Briefly it is the story of two sisters, Jin and Bin aged 6 and 4 whose mom has to go looking for the kids deadbeat father to get the child support owed her. She leaves the two sisters with their alcoholic aunt. It is essentially a coming of age film but presented in a quite different manner than others of this genre. No matter who you are you can't help falling in love with these two little kids, who are, in real life, really sisters.
Just to give you an idea there is one scene where Jin is being punished for not keeping a strict eye on her sister. The director tell her to be mean to her sister and she can't. They tried the scene several times from a frontal view and finally had to shoot it from behind because she just couldn't be mean to her sister. If you haven't seen it don't miss it. You'll laugh a little and cry a little. It is also a comment on single moms in modern Korean society.

I looked for information on any future Korean films at Golf Mill, but I didn't see any. The listings don't go very far into the future, though. Maybe now doesn't matter anyway; later when the weather is more reliable, I can make plans.... if they still show Korean films.

After a long hiatus, and not answering phone calls, AMC-Niles has rolled out another Korean film (expected to run 2 weeks): The Suspect (RSK release date: 12/24/13, 127 minutes, genre: Action) from asianwiki.com/The_Suspect_-_Korean_Movie: A North Korean spy (Gong Yoo), who is abandoned by North Korea, settles down in South Korea. He then becomes a the prime suspect in a murder case. The victim in the murder case is the CEO of a large corporation. The suspect now attempts to uncover the truth. Ginnycat, Niles' website is updated by a 3rd-party and is reported not to be reliable.

F.Y.I.-- not sure if this will be of any help, but back when I was going crazy about finding time to see the movie "The Commitment", I went to the AMC website and emailed the theater about what times they were going to show the movie. Someone got back to me either the same day or the next- he was very nice and told me when the times were going to be posted on the website. So maybe, if nuwildcats posts a movie you can email the theater and ask for more details. Hope this helps....

Bird11 (do you have 11 birds?), thx for the email contact info. Got in not long ago from Barrington and only have time to add this on...only when I called AMC-Niles on Saturday after checking their website (which didn't show The Suspect as running, anymore than its showing up tonite) did I learn a kmovie was currently running. I suppose AMC's getting less than 48 hrs notice they'll have a kmovie beginning on a Friday throws the Fandango webhosts off their game. To date, I don't remember ever seeing a kmovie listed on AMC-Niles' website.
