Don't know if this is common knowledge on the Board, so, apologies may be in order. While traveling I met a young Korean-American who told me AMC Showplace regularly features full-length Korean films. I called AMC's box office who said there's currently two running: one subtitled in Korean, "Stoker," an American film directed by a well-known Korean; the second, a Korean movie w/English subtitles. Admission M-Th before 5pm = $5.00; all other times = $7.50. Their contact info is: Phone: (847) 544-7380; Address: 301 W Golf Rd, Niles, IL 60714. This thread is more meant as info on where to find Korean movies in Chicago. That's why I told nuwildcats to post it here.

Ginnycat, have you gone yet? Let us know because if it sounds good enough, I'll move traveling to Niles' AMC near the top of my to-do list!

Thank you, thank you! I hope to go there soon! No, not yet. I just checked their schedule with the link nuwildcats gave, but none of the films are Korean. Are they shown at odd times, or aren't there any running this week, I wonder.

Ginnycat5, Excuse the mixup on editing quoted texts (someone has kindly been cleaning up behind me). I called AMC's Box Office (847-544-7380). They said their Korean movies are new releases, and they haven't shown any Korean movies in the last month, nor are any scheduled in the upcoming month.
The young KorAm woman who told me about it said she regularly went there for Korean movies so this might just be a cyclical thing. I may have miscontrued what she was saying but she had said she was an historical fan and didn't care much for the other types. So I'd been looking forward to seeing the pageantry, etc., on a full screen. Oh, well, I'll check back with the Box Office next month.

There's a drop-down menu under Programs; they have Bollywood films and Chinese cinema listed, but no Korean. Bollywood www.amctheatres.com/programs/independent/bollywood There's a list of locations that feature these films, with 3 in Illinois. Chinese has 2 in IL www.amctheatres.com/programs/independent/chinese-cinema Guess we have to wait and see. Or check for publicity at Korean groceries?

I sure meet a lot of Koreans while out and about in Chicago and its suburbs, but never do I get to a Korean grocery store. I checked out your link above but to not throw my net too wide, I'll have to focus in specifically on the Niles AMC location: Website: www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/amc-showplace-niles-12Thanks for providing your links.

There's been a 3 month break in AMC's Korean films (the last was "Secretly, Greatly" released in June with its 2nd night ticket sales breaking the all-time record back in Korea). Now AMC Niles is showing "The Flu," an action, medical thriller that might not rise to "Secretly" fame. AsianWiki's info found here: asianwiki.com/The_Flu_-_Korean_Movie. Its xenophobia and nationalism were pointed out, dropping its appeal. This will either be a "love it, great movie" or "hate it, cheesy." Stars Soo-Ae, Lee-Hee Joon (won KBS' 2012 Best New Actor and Paeksang's 2013 Best New Actor), Jang Hyuk (Thank You, IRIS2). CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?...AMC just got "The Flu" last week - and doesn't know if they'll be airing it after this coming Thursday, Sept 17th. So if you're tempted to try it, it's only guaranteed until then. I wish I'd known about "Secretly..." would have definitely gone to see it but it's available for online viewing. "The Flu" I'll pass on unless someone here sees it and falls on the "terrific movie!" side. "The Flu" Mon-Thurs air times: 12:50pm ($5.00), 7:15pm and 9:50pm ($7.50). Box office phone: (847) 544-7380

AMC-Niles started showing the 9/11/13 RSK release of The Face Reader set in the Joseon era (Runtime: 2:19). This has gotten great reviews. If interested, know that Korean films tend to run only 2-3 weeks at AMC's Niles. Briefly, "Nae-kyung, the most skillful face reader in Joseon dynasty, was living in seclusion when he was offered a lucrative partnership by Yeon-hong, a Korean geisha. Nae-kyung accepts the proposal to read the faces of Yeon-hong’s guests only to get involved in a murder case. With his face reading skills, Nae-kyung successfully identifies the murderer and his skills are soon acknowledged by King Moonjong who orders him to identify the potential traitors who threaten his reign." For a more expanded synopsis, see: www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_The_Face_Reader.phpAddress: 301 W Golf Rd, Niles, IL 60714. Showtimes: 10:00AM 1:05PM 4:10PM 7:15PM 10:20PM Admission M-Th before 5pm: $5.00; all other times: $7.50. For weekend showings, you can confirm the times with the box office: (847) 544-7380. Was hoping to go last night after coming back from Barrington but the 2+ hours film put me off. I called the box office to find out if this was the last week and I'm in luck. The Face Reader will be kept for another week starting Friday. Film time (confirmed thru this Thurs only): noon, 3:15 and 6:30 Maybe because of the recent Korean Thanksgiving holiday, the film reached high numbers ("Showbox International’s The Face Reader added an estimated $22.3m as the South Korean historical drama’s international running total reached an early $39.4m." 9/23/13 http://www.screendaily.com) The link gave a well-rounded view of what to expect from this "sumptious" film, but when I went back to post it today it asked me to sign up with a credit card before viewing. Instead I'm posting a well-written review, albeit from an obscure source: twitchfilm.com/2013/09/review-the-face-reader-is-a-terrific-period-yarn.html.

AMC-Niles is firming up the schedule for Korean films beginning Friday. The Face Reader, it appears, will be held over another week. Its ticket sales to date has made it the 10th highest-grossing Korean film of all-time.
A second Korean film, Tough as Iron (RSK release date: 10/02/2013), will be shown through Thursday at 4:00 only. Starring Yoo Ah-in, this film doesn't promise much with a lackluster storyline ("based in Busan, Kang-cheol lives a struggling life without a job but gets involved with the gang to gather his mother's medical fees") and its modest (1.1M) ticket sales to date.
I've now seen The Face Reader and it dashed my expectation--based on its description--of a taut storyline. Rather, it presented as more of a lighthearted story, with the exceptions of King Monjoon and Kim Jong-seo who were riveting onscreen personas, albeit during their limited time onscreen. For historical fans, this fictionalized character will probably add dimensions to the familiar story of Monjoon-General Kim-Grand Prince Suyang.
I'm not saying it was a bad film, but that it overall lacked the dramatic tension I was expecting to find.
If you make the trip out to AMC-Niles, you may want to stop in at the new Health Korea that just launched its 8000 s.f. store on the extreme east end of Golf Mill, directly opposite AMC. Strolling through, I saw a mashup of bedding, traditional Korean items, utensils, beauty products and their highlighted product, red ginseng teas.
