THere's been alot of films with anti-Imperial Japanese messages coming out of Korea recently. Maybe it's because next year marks the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement.

Hey, I remember reading a memoir about a family who went to North Korea believing it was a socialist paradise. The difference is that the writer is a half Korean half Japanese man whose father was Korean and mother was Japanese.

Hey, I remember reading a memoir about a family who went to North Korea believing it was a socialist paradise. The difference is that the writer is a half Korean half Japanese man whose father was Korean and mother was Japanese. Yes, about 93000 Koreans from Japan moved to North Korea believing it was a socialist paradise between 1959 and 1984. Some of them took their Japanese wives with them. But this was possible in their case because they basically lived in Little North Korea inside Japan. They attended schools that teach them about greatness of Kim Ilsung and learn the same North Korean propaganda as the people in North Korea. They were basically indoctrinated with North Korean ideology from birth. Only about 300 of who moved to North Korea during these years made it out and defected to South Korea and Japan. They all describe the place as "living hell." It's unfortunate this North Korean community still exists in Japan today even though they are all aware of real North Korea by now. Kids going to North Korean school, praising Kim Ilsung in 21st century Japan, how weird is this? Unlike the Zainichi Koreans, who have been brainwashed from birth, however, Oh Gilnam's case is more tragic as he did not receive North Korean education and only went there after listening to some words of nonsense by the North Korean agent. His daughters, who were born in South Korea and grew up in free world watching American films and eating Burger King, are now living in North Korean concentration camp, singing praises about Kim Ilsung and Kim Jong-il all because of their father's foolish decision.

It makes perfect sense--they ate Burger King and now they're telling whoppers!

I've actually met a man who was originally a university professor from Pyongyang. He escaped to the South during the war. He's no longer of this world though.

Whenever he spoke, it sounded like he was using the standard Korean. He must have changed his accent. I googled a video of Hahm Myeongsu's interview and he spoke in Pyongyang accent. Kang Indeok, who was the South Korean Minister of Unification in 1998, still speaks in Pyongyang accent at age 86. Kang was a high school student in Pyongyang when the war broke out and even saw Kim Ilsung in person during his high school time there. He defected to the south just 4 months after the war began.

Amazon Prime has this 2016 film Age Of Blood, its like a Joseon dynasty Assault On Precinct 13, as a lone prison guard battles of a veritable army of Soron's trying to kill the young Yeonjo.
The opening sequence credits reminded me of our own Saguek as the Soron uprising of the 1720s was depicted in graphic novel format, reminded me of your artwork.
