Seeing Deokman out among the Gayan refugees in Ep37 reminded me of the confusion we had (okay, I had) about Samnyang and Amnyang. The other day I stumbled upon a source that provides some clarity to that. It's an online PDF of a recently released book about Korean Buddhism. Here's what it says: Samnyang Province: present-day Yangsan, in South Gyeongsang Province Amnyang Prefecture: Now Gyeongsan...in North Gyeongsang Province, just to the east of Daegu. That would have been quite a trek for the Gayans. Looks like more than 30 miles in a straight line, and a straight-line route probably wasn't likely back then. Not at all implausible, though, especially if Samnyang was infertile land and they absolutely had to make the trip. But seeing Deokman out there in Amnyang, getting there from the capital, looks like 20-plus miles in a straight line. Round-trip...that was an awfully fast trip! Gotta love TV. Anyway, in case anybody else is still curious, there's the answer. Collected Works of Korean Buddhism, Vol. 1 Wonhyo: Selected Works Edited by A.
