Man of Equator - Ep.1
A 30ish young man ("AA") walks dazedly, but purposefully, through a slum until he meets up with an apparently illicit gun dealer and buys a small handgun.
Another 30ish young man ("BB") drives an expensive car to an unknown destination.
An older man, President Jin, sits by the side of a beautiful pool, gazing at an equally lovely view. AA appears and accuses Jin of coveting what is not his."I told you to get it back for me," sez Jin. "All I had will be mine again."
AA pulls the gun; "Here's your death warrant. And mine."
"Ingrate," says Jin. "Weak like your father."
"I didn't realize your hands were so bloody!" snarls AA as he prepares to shoot Jin. BB bursts in.
BB: "Jang-il." He tries to stop Jang-il--with his words.
Jangil (AA): "Ah, President Jin, if only Sun-woo (BB) were your son!"
Jangil prepares to shoot Jin, but Sunwoo pushes his arm down. In anger, Jangil turns the gun on Sunwoo. The latter waits impassively to be shot. Freeze frame; fade to black.
15 years earlier:
Lee Jangil is the school math wiz, while Kim Sunwoo is a juvenile delinquent who picks fights with everyone and never applies himself to his studies. Although in the same homeroom, they do not interact. They appear to be around 17 years old.
Jangil's father (Mr. Lee) is a drunkard and gambler who has reneged on debts to a brutal gang of loan sharks. When these guys kidnap Jangil from the classroom (and rough up the female teacher), Sunwoo runs out and fights them. Jangil returns to his desk and finishes the test he was taking. When Sunwoo comes back, Jangil shows him the answers. Jangil wants Sunwoo's protection in return for future cheating, but Sunwoo is disgusted by this idea.
However, apparently Sunwoo's grades do improve. His father (Mr. Kim) is delirious with joy. They go out for soup. While Sunwoo waits in the restaurant, Mr. Kim secretly calls President Jin. "Long time no see, and oh yes, I found your dead fiance's son. Can I see you?" Jin tells him to get lost--permanently.
Meanwhile, in the restaurant, Sunwoo sees Jangil and Mr. Lee. The loan sharks appear and torture Mr. Lee right there. Jangil protests; then Sunwoo rises in rage and attacks the loan sharks. They drag him off and commence beating him. Mr. Lee, apparently also a coward, tells Jangil to mind his own business, but Jangil runs to help Sunwoo escape from the sharks. In the process, he kicks the shate out of one shark, who later has the nerve to report this attack to the police.
Sunwoo is blamed. He refuses to name his "cohort" and gets a one-week, in-school suspension. Jangil goes to argue with him and they are caught fighting. Jangil claims he's offered to tutor Sunwoo, who is forced to accept this help. He finally cooperates, but also he teaches Jangil how to fight.
They become friends. During this process, we learn Jangil is bitter and motivated by revenge to become a prosecutor and "get" everyone who's hurt him or his father. Sunwoo has a surprisingly Buddhist attitude for someone who fights constantly, and advises Jangil to learn to understand his enemies and forgive them.
President Jin is importuned by Jangil's father Mr. Lee, who works at the construction site of Jin's new home and wants a scholarship from the company for Jangil. They plan to fire him because he's a pest--after the job is done.
Sunwoo meets one of President Jin's victims, a girl whose family and father are being ruined by him. She breaks the windscreen of Jin's car before she sees Sunwoo hiding in the back seat; then she misdirects some thugs searching for Sunwoo. Sunwoo takes the rock from her hand and finishes destroying the window. They both run as Jin arrives, but separate before Sunwoo learns her name.
At school, Jangil meets a pretty girl in the rain--Soomi, an artist who later draws his picture. They agree to meet for a date, but Jangil, a terrible snob, stands her up once he learns (indirectly from Sunwoo) that her father is a shaman. She's not too surprised when this happens.
Mr. Kim, Sunwoo's dad, learns he's dying and proceeds to write out some apparently important documents. Then, he tells Sunwoo there's someone he must meet on his birthday. Sunwoo is upset to learn his father will die, and Mr. Kim delays telling Sunwoo his important information.
On the day, Mr. Kim meets with President Jin at the lonely home construction site. Mr. Kim tells President Jin, (a) I have a son, but my wife left me, and (b) I rescued your son from an orphanage. It turns out Mr. Kim, a talented forger, helped President Jin ruin the family of Jin's own fiancee because of unfounded jealousy, and then took the fall for Jin, as did the man Jin thought was cheating with his fiancee. After Mr. Kim realizes President Jin is still a total bastard, he declares he'll never reveal the son and that he's going to ruin Jin. Kim knows everything, and he'll reveal all.
Of course, Jin attacks Mr. Kim and manages to strangle him with some rope. He looks up to see Jangil's dad, Mr. Lee, peering into the window.
Jangil seeks out Sunwoo on his birthday, but Sunwoo is going to a date with his dad. The latter trips and falls when he runs into the feet of Mr. Kim, swinging from a tree branch. Sunwoo starts screaming.
