I've had a chance to get a look at the first episode in advance of the Friday view date. For other history novices like me who watch it, here's a little bit of historical background that will help you settle in. No spoilers; just some information that predates the episode and sets the scene for the beginning of the series.
QSD is set in the kingdom of Shilla, during the "Three Kingdoms" period. Shilla occupied the southeast part of the Korean peninsula; Baekje occupied the southwest, and Goguryeo (remember Dae Joyoung?) was to the north. The series begins in the year 572 AD, when Jinheung was Shilla's king. Jinheung rose to the throne in 540 (but was only seven years old at the time and so his mother initially acted as regent).
Prior to 572, the borders of the three kingdoms had been shifting because of shifting alliances. Jinheung had allied Shilla with Baekje in 551 and attacked Goguryeo, successfully acquiring valuable territory to their north--including the Han River. Goguryeo had taken the Han valley from Baekje in 475; Baekje reclaimed the valley, and Shilla acquired the upper Han to the east. But then Shilla secretly changed allegiances, allying with Goguryeo and attacking Baekje in 553, conquering the Han valley for itself.
Which didn't sit well with Baekje, can you blame them. Baekje struck back at Shilla the following year, but not only was the attack a failure, Baekje's King Seong was killed in the process. So the series starts with lingering animosity in the air.
I think that's sufficient, but if anybody else wants to add anything that will prove useful, please do.

And about how long after Goguryeo was founded--as recounted by the drama Jumong--is this drama taking place?

There used to be a really nice visual timeline somewhere on the Internet that listed all of these historicals and charted exactly how they fit together. And darn it, I can't find the thing any more. If it's out there, anybody who can recover it for me, I'd sure appreciate it.
Anyway...Jumong was first century BC. Dae Joyoung was seventh century AD; I think it ended in 699.

To answer your question Bo .....5 Minutes
Ok seriously many of the characters in this drama were big players in the fall of Goguryeo like Kim Yushin and Kim Chunchu . If that KBS Drama King Taejong Muhyeol ever ever gets off the ground it should recap the last part of this drama and continue with what happens after .
As great as this drama is and do not get my negative points wrong it is superb (after a questionable start )with great fighting scenes but it really goes off the charts in places with Historical accuracy .
Considering both Japan and Korea got television in the late 50's it is a tall order to compile a complete list though i think we had a post in other shows that came up with all kinds of stuff ,we do know this is not the first time Seondeok has been the subject of a drama the first was a 60's black and white and the Admiral has had a few turns of course Jang Hee Bin seems to get a run out every four or five years and no surprise Jeongjo or Dad in a box seems to be yearly .

Yes, I know the thing is defunct; that's the timeline I had been looking for. But I did just dig up a hard copy of it that I printed out five years ago, so we at least have that. Unfortunately it's B&W and not really scan-worthy, and obviously it's five years old.
If no such thing currently exists, then we'll make one. After I get through dealing with Episode 1 I'll start a thread with the information from the printout and we'll see if we can rustle up some contributions to flesh out the more recent shows. A lot of people out there would find a timeline very useful and there's no reason we can't be the place to host it.
P.S. One thing I do need to correct--the timeline says that Dae Joyoung ended in 719. I do remember now that at the very end it jumped ahead of Balhae's founding in 699, as a sort of epilogue. So 719 is probably correct.

Both GQS and Ballad of Seodong start with reference to the battle between Shilla and Baekje where the Baekje king literally lost his head.
