Ep.66:
Another court lady runs in with side dishes for San’s noodles--"They’ve been tested." When she goes back to scold the kitchen lady for not taking in the side dishes, she learns the noodles themselves were not tested by any of the official staff and that a stranger bearing her own seal brought the noodles in. Someone rushes to stop San from eating the untested food, but he’s already taken a bite.
Hong rushes to his assassins and tells them not to shoot Queen Hyeoui. He then learns that San is eating instead of her. The grounds are closed. Won Bin’s Lady Choi tries to escape but is turned back by a guard. She finds Hong, tells him she didn’t poison the food and shows him the poison. Now Hong realizes how close he came to killing his friend the king.
San wonders to Dae-su how they knew he’d be eating the food instead of Q-H. D-S catches a guard sneaking Lady Choi out from the grounds. They fight and she tries to escape but as she is about to be caught, she pulls the poison out of her jacket. Hong hears his guy was captured and that Lady Choi killed herself. The Norons can’t believe what they hear; nor can Suh and Kang. San hears the news, doesn’t believe it and says everyone is lying to him. Hong comes and confirms it, breaking San’s heart. Q-Hyeoui, who earlier learned Song was not pregnant, confers with Song about San.
At Dowahseo, they gossip about Hong’s downfall and think they’ll have to paint his beheading. Sir Choi and Tebi M also panic, as Lord Jang has been put in charge of the Sec’y Hong investigation and is opening up everything about him. T-M and Choi may be caught in the net. She decides to go home “sick” for awhile, and he takes a leave of absence. Prince Eun-un’s home is also searched. And Uncle realizes he might be implicated due to carrying the “stop order” to Lady Choi.
Hong is dragged in for his interrogation, where he sees his men have been “interrogated” rather severely. He takes all responsibility and asks Lord Jang not to take it out on his men. Jang says "The king says I can, but I hope you’ll cooperate." They start the interrogation.
Petitions flood in asking that all Hong’s prior actions be reversed. Unfortunately most of them are connected with San’s reforms. Hong, beaten and thrown unceremoniously into his cell, recalls his last conversation with Sec’y Jeong, who warned him that the tighter Hong’s grip on power, the sooner his end would come.
Dowager Hye hears Hong has confessed all and will soon be adjudged. She wonders how this could have happened [apparently unbothered by thoughts of her own culpability in the matter of his too-rapid rise to power]. At Q-H’s palace, Lady Kim proposes to have a slumber party with Q-H, who has not been sleeping well. She comforts her about Hong and says there are many others loyal to San.
San receives Lord Jang’s report from Sir Chae; Hong and two guards have confessed to the plot against Q-H. He’ll “make the judgment tomorrow.” Chae asks what it is; San implies it is death.
DS+2 fight about how to feel about Hong’s death. Kang still values him; Suh hates his betray-full guts and D-S tries to keep them apart. Hong sees D-S in the yard and begs him to finish Hong’s work of reorganizing the military and to take good care of San’s security. “Why’d you do it?” asks D-S.
San, in his public office, very upset. Hong, sleeping in the jail, wakes suddenly to find San standing outside the door. “Is this why you served me? I have to pass judgment on you as a traitor tomorrow!” San begs Hong to defend himself and declares he’ll believe anything Hong tells him. Hong declares his own guilt and begs San never to be troubled by a person like himself again. “How could you make me kill my best friend and comrade?” cries San.
Later, Song sits with San as he mourns the fulfillment of his duty as king.
Uncle skitters around town worried about his own fate. At the tavern, Mak-soon tells him D-S has been drinking all night. Uncle confesses to D-S about his part in Hong’s plot, worried he’ll be implicated. But D-S gets excited and runs to the palace.
San comes out to sentence the criminals. Lord Jang prepares to read the sentence.
