Ep.65:
San sends Mr Nam to postpone his meeting, kindly asks Hyeoui to return to her palace and turns to Hong. He tells Hong to butt out and let Queen H take care of the child, then indicates a pile of petitions that all say the same exact thing, which “have Tebi Mamah’s handprints all over them.” San trusted Hong to keep her in check and wants Hong to investigate whether she’s involving herself in politics (not allowed!). When T-M’s messenger comes to tell Hong she’s worried about Wan Poong, he says T-M should lay low.
Chobi begins her campaign to suck up to Lady Kim with a personal, handmade gift, which she accepts but then tells Chobi to back off. Then Lady Kim sees Tebi Mamah’s lady giving a letter to Lady Choi, who used to serve Won Bin. She reports to Queen Hyeoui --something is up. In the meantime, Hong sets Officer Suh to spy on Q-H. Q-H sends Miss Song to secretly summon D-S to investigate Sec’y Hong’s connection with Tebi M. D-S doesn’t want to interfere in the relationship between San and Hong, and he trusts Hong.
Song faints in the courtyard. Chobi becomes convinced she must be pregnant. Song says she’s just tired.
Hong reassures Prince Eun-un that Wan Poong will definitely become crown prince. When he returns to the palace, San is waiting in his office, reading guard reports. It turns out that San is removing Hong from power because he’s lost his way, and he believes it’s his (San’s) fault because he covered for all Hong’s mistakes. He’s giving him a time out for a new beginning. At a cabinet meeting, new assignments are read out. Hong’s titles are all taken away, he’ll only be head of the Imperial Guard. [You know, like Hoover was “only” head of the FBI.] Lord Jang and the Norons cackle. Sir Choi and Tebi Mamah discuss this disaster, and Hong receives an urgent message.
Off Suh, in disgust, tells DS & Kang about Hong’s “crazy orders” to follow Queen H and even to “make up something” if he couldn’t find any evidence against her. D-S follows Hong and witnesses him enter a secret meeting with Tebi M. At the meeting, Hong tells T-M that he regrets working with her and never wants to see her again, but when D-S confronts him and asks where he was, it’s “none of D-S’s business.” After a contentious and sad conversation, they part, both feeling betrayed.
At his office, Hong receives a summons from Q-H, who knows about the T-M meeting and has seized the guards who were there. She accuses Hong of disloyalty and will tell San after he returns from his ancestral visit, so Hong better ‘fess up personally before then. Later, Hong tries to sound San out, but San never could ever ever ever believe that Hong would betray him in any way. Hong, desperate, begs Q-H not to reveal it and promises he has already cut off his association with T-M, but she doesn’t believe him.
Hyeoui takes her leave of D-Hye, who is irritated that Song is going on the ancestral trip. Q-H and Song are giving feasts for the people in support of San’s policies. The royal procession passes Aunt Mak-soon, who brags about her many high-up court relatives (Hong, Uncle, D-S & Song) and offers to do favors for people.
On the way, San holds a grievance hearing in an area where the people are burning their main crop, cotton, because the magistrate is colluding with merchants in the capital, who are buying cheaper, better Qing cotton and elbowing out local producers. Discussions.
Hong has obtained some very bad poison. He arranges for a rifleman as a “backup” at Hyeoui’s feast for the elderly, and then asks D-S to keep Song away from it. He gives the poison to Won Bin’s Lady Choi and tells her to put it into Q-H’s food. Then he reduces security for the feast. Assassins get into place as DS+2 leave the area.
Q-H goes to pick up Song and sees her faint. The doctor comes and so does San. They decide to leave Song to recover. Lady Choi takes food meant for Q-H, saying she is from the palace kitchens. Hong, very nervous, sees San talking with Q-H. The elderly are ushered into the banquet area. Hong, in his office, suddenly runs out and sends Uncle to “stop Lady Choi.” San then comes into the banquet and is presented with some local noodles. He starts to eat them.
