Ep.61-
Everyone, but everyone, tries to help Song get out of trouble, but she refuses to cooperate. Everyone very unhappy. (Well, Dowager Hye is superdeedooper happy she kept the Evil One away from her precious boy.) Dae-su ends up helping Song’s brother escape from the tribunal soldiers, but D-S is captured and tells Hong what’s up, who in turn tells San.
San issues a free trade decree and then summons Hong to tell him all the Catholics and Song will be released. Why? None of those guys had enough money to buy those expensive guns, and even if they had, why wouldn’t they use them against soldiers who only had swords? He shows Hong an accounting of Lord Yang’s sale of goods and orders Hong to find out where the guns actually came from.
Hong bullies the warden into letting D-S go, tells D-S he’s family, no matter what, and that he needs D-S to help get Song released. [OKAY. First Hong’s bad. Then he’s good. Then he’s bad. Then he’s good. This guy has issues.] DS+2 discover the guns were smuggled in exchange for wild ginseng, and they go on to investigate some piracy.
Concurrently, Sir Choi tells Tebi Mamah about the “secret” gun investigation. Surprisingly, she seems to really believe it was the Catholics who did everything—until another obviously upsetting thought occurs to her…
D-S & Suh, on undercover stakeout, meet with gunrunners and are nearly killed when they misunderstand that “Jung” isn’t a man, it’s slang for cash money. Kang & Hong rescue them; the smugglers are caught or killed. They raid a young noble’s house, but he swallows poison. Hong demands to know who wanted San dead, and the man says, “Everyone does, you fool!” and passes out. For medical purposes, they shake him and yell, “See here!” but he dies anyway. The man was a translator who went to Qing and got rich partnering with one of the Chosun merchant clans.
Song is released and runs home to see her brother. Tearful reunion, tearfully witnessed by Uncle and D-S. D-S tells Song the surprising news that San is the one who rescued the injured Wook from the forest after D-S was arrested.
San thanks Hong for helping him with the Song situation, then gives him a decree saying he can adopt San’s brother’s son for Won Bin.
The Norons want Catholicism stamped out because it is subversive, but San takes them to a beggars’ camp where Catholics are selflessly ministering to and feeding people forgotten by King and Noron alike. Everyone feels bad.
Because Hong is still filtering San’s correspondence and everyday messages, he learns that Queen Hyeoui has ordered another concubine selection. She tells Hong that she and Prince Eun-un have agreed the adoption by Hong is inappropriate. The crown prince will be San’s own blood son. He makes more wild accusations against her, and she tells him to button his lip and be more respectful to the queen of his nation. (YAH!) Hong goes back to his office, pitches a tantrum and swears that he’ll be the uncle of the crown prince.
San sends out the Qing birthday envoyage. At Dowahseo, Song takes a leave of absence so she can travel with her brother for awhile.
Dae-su asks San if they can drink together, at which time he tells San he should bring Song in as concubine. She really loves San and the only reason she didn’t come in last time was because she was obeying San’s mother. San stunned--again.
Song helps out at the beggar camp. She moons over San’s sash, but when Wook comes to get her she loses it on a rock. When she runs back to look for it, she is greeted by San. “Looking for this?”
“What brings you here?” she asks.
“I came for you.”
