Ep.59:
Members of DS+2:
Officer Suh - head guard
Officer Kang - second head guard (the archer)
Officer Park (Dae-su)
Details of Won Bin’s condition are sketchy. San and Sec’y Hong both think visiting her can wait until after an important meeting (about Qing tribute and trade); however, she is in a feverish state begging for her brother. Hyeoui wants to visit Won Bin as a mercy, but Dowager Hye forbids her mercy because Won Bin “deserves her punishment.”
We learn that the man (“Mr X”) who rescued Song from a drunk is really Song’s long-lost brother (who she thought was dead but really was sold as a slave). (And his friend looks suspiciously like the drunk.) He’s “involved in overturning the country’s customs,” so he’ll leave her in the dark.
Tebi Mamah gives Sec’y Hong a report blaming “revolutionaries in the capital” for the assassination. She also says his sister looked pretty bad when T-M visited her earlier.
And so Hong talks to W-B’s lady, who complains that Queen H won’t even visit the girl, and learns how badly she is doing. Hong rushes into his sister’s quarters, but she dies in his arms, saying she’d rather be dead than humiliated.
San is also too late to see her. Hyeoui and Dowager Hye hear the news and can hardly believe it, as Won Bin was fine until that morning. Both San and Hong blame themselves for Won Bin’s death and unhappy life. After the funeral, Hong returns to work and San then orders him to take a sabbatical.
Queen Hyeoui, surprised to see Won Bin’s palace being cleared so soon, tells W-B’s servants they can choose to go or stay. They don’t seem friendly. She meets Hong, who launches into a diatribe about how much Hyeoui hated his poor misunderstood sister, refused to forgive her, is kicking W-B’s belongings out, is cold and unfeeling—in short, personally caused Won Bin’s demise. He believes she treated W-B badly because she was Hong’s sister. Lady Kim, outraged, thinks if Q-H lets this pass, it’ll come back to bite her, but Hyeuoi won’t let her meddle.
San doesn’t get enough sleep, worrying Mr Nam. Officer Suh returns to work early. San has his guards, including DS+2, instruct the half-nobles in archery to help develop their bodies as well as their minds and leadership skills.
Hong drinks himself into a dark place, carouses at gisaeng houses and hates on Hyeuoi. DS+2 have decided to go find him when he walks in, acting normal, and tells them he’s giving an important briefing for the palace and imperial guards.
Sir Choi meets with Sir Min; “everything is ready.”
Hong gathers his men and goes after the “insurgents.” On the way, they pass Mr X (who has stopped to help a beggar woman with hungry children). Mr X warns the "insurgents" to run just as Hong begins to break down the gate. They are brutally attacked, some are killed and some escape through a back gate and are pursued. Several are shot with arrows, including Mr X, and their elderly leader is badly injured.
At Dowahseo, Song stays after work, alone. Mr X stumbles through the dark streets. Song closes up. As she walks home, she hears Mr X’s dying gasps and sees he’s injured; she cries out for someone to help her.
***
I wonder. Could this group of “insurgents” be the famous White Tower Club (previous episode)?
