Ep.58: (BTW, I did a lot of crunching here but couldn't seem to compress any more than this. Seems like a silly thing to obsess over, so here it is.)
Queen H takes her leave of San and Hong. San tells Hong he told her he trusts Hong implicitly and looks at Hong the same as himself.
Hyeoui has told Song the import of the tonic. Song tells Dae-su, who figures out Hong’s behind the whole thing and feels betrayed. Also, when Dae-su showed up, he apparently stopped a stalker who was about to grab Song in the street but doesn’t notice the guy.
Hong wants Hyeoui to protect his sister, but she is implacable. The best she can do is let him confess to San on his own. Hong arranges to give himself and the doctor up to the tribunal, but Doc has committed suicide by biting his own tongue. (Eugh.) At the palace, San discovers the herb switcheroo and then learns Won Bin is at D-Hye’s palace, performing the “atonement ritual.” The dowager rushes out and brings her in. Won Bin “confesses” that the miscarriage was caused by her drinking motherwort in error. Dowager Hye has a total pony.
Outside, San and Hyeoui overhear. San asks Hyeoui about it, but she’s silent. Won Bin kneels outside, and when Hong arrives she urgently whispers that he must preserve himself and their family’s newfound honor and prestige. She just needs to conceive “again” to make things right.
At Dowahseo, gossip is rampant. No one believes Won Bin didn’t know about the effects of motherwort on pregnancy (even men know about it), and they all assume she and Hong will be kicked out.
Lord Jang snubs Sir Choi on his way in to see San and demand action on the Won Bin matter. Jang and the Norons want Hong (behind the whole plot) dismissed, interrogated and demoted, with the same for Won Bin. But Sir Choi declares that Hong obviously knew nothing and Won Bin merely should be lowered in rank and confined, as she is just young and stupid. Choi and Jang argue before a nonplussed San.
San, after noting that Tebi Mamah and Hong must be “close,” asks Hong what really happened. Hong considers Won Bin’s expressed wishes, but confesses his full involvement. San is stunned and Hong leaves. Choi tells Hong to lay low, but Hong says Tebi Mamah can’t order him around. T-M figures they’ll win and everything will be concluded to her advantage. Meanwhile, Sir Min (who defected from Lord Jang to T-M) runs away from the capital.
At Dowager Hye’s palace, Hyeoui receives a sincere apology. Outside, Queen H gives it to Won Bin for lying yet again. She knows W-B’s secret plan. Q-H tells Hong he'll "get his" from San, but as head of the women’s court, Hyeoui will break Won Bin down to private and send her out forever.
Song is called in to see Hyeoui and greeted warmly by Lady Kim (LOL). Hyeoui thanks Song for saving her fate. At the archery range, San summons Dae-su to tell him he is afraid he can’t trust Hong or himself any more. That night, Won Bin kneels in the pouring rain. San comes, orders her taken to her quarters and summons Hyeoui to his offices, where she’s surprised to see Hong. San tells her he’s thinking of forgiving the two Hongs and he hopes she can forget about it, too. She says she’ll do whatever he asks. He doesn’t think he can proceed without Hong’s help, but warns Hong it’s the last time he’ll be forgiven.
At Dowahseo, Tak neglects his duties and is missing in action. Lee keeps sneaking off to look at his erotica treasure trove. Tak shows up and shows Lee the scratched face he received from his angry wife. Lee, as an abused husband, is sympathetic, but doesn’t mention the book.
San wants to leave the palace to visit the folk, but Hong sets up a “safe route” with guards. San learns this and insists on going another way. He meets some scholars who introduce him to the term “bookworm” and invite him to join their book club (White Tower Club)—San asks Nam to investigate them (probably for government jobs). San also waits in the shadows while Dae-su questions the executed slave’s mother and hears a good report.
Then, someone shoots at San (misses). Dae-su pursues but loses the assassin. San comes home and scolds Hong for arranging the safe route.
Song, that same night, is accosted by a drunk in an alley and rescued by a young nobleman who advises her of a better route.
Dowager Hye and Hyeoui hear of the shocking assassination attempt. So does Lord Jang, who asks Choi if he has any suspects. Jang thinks Hong will go nuts again. Predictably, Hong blames the Norons and wants to stomp on them. He orders Sir Min found and all Norons followed.
San receives some terrible news: Won Bin is in critical condition.

Wouldn’t it have been better to confess that the pregnancy was a “ghost” rather than confessing that you unintentionally murdered the royal heir? What’s wrong with that girl?
I always feel sorry for the servants, standing there for hours, in the rain or slightly bowed holding something heavy on a stick at an inconvenient angle. Poor things. And then they get murdered willy-nilly whenever some royal goes nuts.
Also, San puts Hong in complete charge of his personal security and then scolds him when he tries to take care of that? Um, arbitrary and unreasonable.
