Ep.57 –
San is stunned by the physician’s accusation against Hyeoui. What’s more, Doc claims she knew what she was doing and sent the same herbs after she was told they were bad for Won Bin So. Stopped feeling sorry for THIS guy.
Hyeoui brings angelica tea to Won Bin, who, after exulting in the evil fate she’s going to serve to Hyeoui, has her people burn the tea . Dowager Hye witnesses this and demands an explanation.
San searches out Hyeoui and finds her taking care of Won Bin as much as she can. To protect her, he has Mr Nam investigate secretly. San’s mother, told vicious lies by Won Bin, at first suspects Hyeoui but then realizes she couldn’t have done it. She does begin an investigation in the Ladies' Court and tells Queen H. The hospital finds the second tonic did contain the chrysanthemum root the doctor told Q-H not to include—because, we learn, Hong and the doctor “adjusted” the herb mix. San walks in on Hong and Doc and demands to know what’s up between them. San tells Hong that Hyeoui could not have done it and asks him to trust San to find the culprit and to keep an open mind.
Sir Choi and Tebi M. discuss Hyeoui. T-M thinks the whole thing smells bad. She sends Choi out and then consults her physician.
Dae-su finds out from Uncle that Hyeoui’s in trouble. He tells San about following the doctor for Hong. San has DS+2 follow the doctor for more evidence without Hong’s knowledge (to protect him). But Hong has the Doc kidnapped while DS+2 are following him, and the head guard receives a mortal wound (Hong is very upset). The doctor doesn’t know if he’ll live. San is now certain there’s a conspiracy against both his wives.
The Master is absconding, but Song shows up. He tries to shake her; she dogs his steps and then reveals she knows he’s fleeing the jurisdiction. She thanks him for teaching her about painting and life. He says if she learned so much she’d follow her bliss; she says it’s too late; he tells her as long as she thinks that, it will be. He has a painting he made of the graves of his wife and daughter, who died of the plague while he wandered making art, and when he went to paint their likenesses, he couldn’t remember them. “Living with the one you love and cherish is the meaning of life. Art comes after that.” Elsewhere, Tak and Lee search for the Master and the lesson fees he took off them. When Tak runs off to search, Lee discovers the Master’s book of erotic paintings (“art lessons”) and takes it for himself. When Tak returns, he thinks Lee is hiding money and they struggle.
Mr Nam reports to San that Dowager Hye is having Hyeoui’s outside physicians arrested and their goods inspected. San wants D-Hye to butt out, but she says it’s her bailiwick and San should butt out. Later, Hyeoui also tells San that if he believes she is innocent, he has to let his mother investigate and step out of it. He must attend to affairs of state so she doesn’t have that sin on her head.
Lord Jang meets Sec’y Hong and accuses him of attacking the Queen. He notes how well this would work out for Hong’s power base. Power corrupts, etc.
Song hears about Hyeoui’s pickle from the Chief. She discusses it with Chobi, who reminds her of the wormwood tonic sent by Won Bin’s family. Song visits Hyeoui, where Lady Kim hears her being kicked out and bullies the guard ladies to let Song in. When Song tells Queen H the story of the motherwort (motherwort and wormwood are the same thing) tonic, she is totally shocked. Motherwort? He sent her motherwort? she says.
Hyeoui barges into Won Bin’s palace and tells the lippy bitch she knows Won Bin never miscarried. She recognizes the smell of motherwort in the room, because she’s been drinking it for a decade to try to get pregnant. But since you have to stop drinking it once you are pregnant, she knows Won Bin never was. If they examine her pulse, they’ll be able to tell if she actually hemorrhaged. So, what should they do? After Queen H leaves; Won Bin screams out for her brother.
But he’s meeting with Tebi Mamah. She is worried about his troubles and knows all about the phantom pregnancy—the merchant he bought motherwort from has been bragging about his customer, the Great Hong. She says she’ll help him evade discovery.
When Hong hears from his sister about Hyeoui’s demand that she confess, he rushes to see San. He is greeted by a clearly clueless San—talking with Hyeoui. Cold. As. Ice.
****
It seems clear from Gyun Mi-ri’s pronunciation that it’s “Won Bin” not “Wong Bin” or my earlier guess, “Hong Bin.” I’ll take Gyun Mi-ri’s pronunciation any day of the week. Har.
I was shocked when Won Bin revealed she knew all about the plan. I figured it was the doctor’s ad lib to get out of a spot, but this is totally worse. Sec’y Hong is the root of all evil. I knew that. I can’t figure out why these idiots decided to go after the least likely person. I thought they’d go after Song and Chobi or something.
