I was originally going to translate the Life of Monk Won Hyo and Ui Sang next, but I decided not to do that since I don't think they'll appear in the drama. I'll try to translate their story if they appear in the drama.
Instead, I decided to translate the reign of Goguryeo's King Bojang as he and Yeon Gae So Moon made appearances in the drama few weeks back.
Annals of King Bojang(?-682. R.642-668)
Bojang was the first son of King Dae Yang(elevated status), who was the third son of King Pyung Won. His full name was Go Bojang. On October of 642, Yeon Gae So Moon killed King Young Ryu and enthroned Young Ryu's nephew Bojang as the 28th king of Goguryeo.
All political power was centered on the dictator Yeon Gae So Moon. YGSM gave himself the title "Dae Makriji," or the Great Prime Minister of Goguryeo and turned King Bojang into a mere puppet. No one dared to challenge YGSM except for one man, the Lord of Anshi, Yang Manchun.
Yang Manchun considered YGSM's coup as disloyalty and criticized his actions. YGSM sent army to Anshi countless times because of this, but all his attempts ended up in failure. He had no choice but to allow Yang Manchun to continue his post as the Lord of Anshi.
On October of 642, Queen Seondeok of Shilla sent Kim Choon Chu as a messenger to Goguryeo to ask for their aid in the war against Baekje, but was rejected by YGSM.
On March of 643, YGSM sent a messenger to Tang requesting Chinese Taoist masters in order to spread Taoism in Goguryeo. However, the messenger was actually a spy in disguise on Tang's military. Emperor Taizong(Li Shimin) of Tang, of course, assumed he was just a regular messenger, and sent 8 Taoist masters and Laozi's Tao Te Ching to Goguryeo.
When the spy messenger returned, he reported that Li Shimin was getting ready for a war. YGSM began to prepare for a possible Chinese invasion. He drafted men from all over Goguryeo, repaired fortresses, and trained the army.
On September of 643, Shilla sent messenger to Tang and asked for their aid against Goguryeo and Baekje. Li Shimin agreed to help and YGSM allied with Baekje to invade Shilla in return. When Goguryeo and Baekje started attacking Shilla, Li Shimin sent a letter to Goguryeo telling them Tang will punish G and B with its mighty army if they do not stop attacking Shilla. YGSM rejected Li Shimin's request by saying that Goguryeo will not stop until it takes back all of its former territories.
Li Shimin declared a war against Goguryeo upon hearing YGSM's answer under the cause "Tang will punish YGSM, who killed his own king and attacks a neighboring country." Li Shimin had wanted to invade Goguryeo for a long time, but the repulsion from the Chinese people due to 4 huge failed invasions against Goguryeo by the Sui dynasty prevented him from doing so for a long time.
YGSM had 200,000 soldiers at the time including the members of Malgal tribes. He placed 50,000 on the border areas between China and Goguryeo and placed rest of them at Yodong(Liadong in Chinese) and Pyongyang. Yang Manchun, who did not take any order from YGSM, had 30,000 soldiers himself, so Goguryeo had total of 230,000 soldiers.
On March of 645, Li Shimin invaded Goguryeo with 100,000 Chinese soldiers. 40,000 crossed the sea with 500 ships. Li Shimin himself led 60,000 through land. 50,000 Gokturks and Khitans came to Tang's aid, so Tang had total of 150,000 soldiers.
On April, Li Shiji's spearhead troops conquered Gaemo Fortress and Zhang Liang's 40,000 navy that crossed the sea conquered Bisa Fortress on May. Li Shiji went on to attack Yodong(Liadong) Fortress with 10,000 troops next.
YGSM sent 40,000 from Shin Fortress and Guknae Fortress as aid to Yodong. Tang retreated after losing thousands as a result, which led Li Shimin to conquer Yodong Fotress himself with 50,000.
Baek Ahm Fortress was Tang's next target. Son Dae Eum, the Lord of Baek Ahm, surrendered without fighting. Li Shimin then went on to Anshi Fortress with his 50,000, Li Shiji's 10,000, 50,000 Gokturks and Khitans, and 50,000 Goguryean prisoners.
YGSM gave 150,000 troops to Go Yeonsu and Go Hyejin to prevent Tang from attacking Anshi. Li Shimin sent a messenger to Go Yeonsu saying that he did not come to Goguryeo to conquer Goguryeo and that he just wanted to teach the manners of a vassal state. If Goguryeo shows the manner of a vassal state to him, his army would immediately return to China after giving back all the territories he took over so far in this war. Go Yeonsu assumed that Li Shimin had no intention to fight after hearing the message and let his guard down. Li Shimin used the opportunity to ambush Go Yeonsu with 26,000 troops.
Goguryeo suffered a huge loss as a result of the ambush. 30,000 soldiers died, Go Yeonsu and Go Hyejin surrendered to Li Shimin along with their 36,000 soldiers, and the rest of Goguryean troops retreated to Shin Fortress and Guhn Ahn Fotress.
Anshi Fotress was completely isolated after this loss and Li Shimin used his entire army to attack Anshi from this point on. However, Yang Manchun defeated every single Tang's attack. Li Shimin even built a mud castle that was higher than Anshi Fortress in order to get in the fortress, but this also ended up in failure. Tang lost a lot of its supplies and armies during its attempts to conquer Anshi and many of the troops also froze and starved to death when the winter came in October. Tang had no choice but to retreat.
It looks like the translation fits Dae Jo Young or SBS Yeon Gaesomoon thread more than this thread lol. Will this drama cover Tang's invasion against Goguryeo? Probably not. But even if they do, I doubt it will be able to top Dae Jo Young's depiction of the Battle of Anshi Fortress.

Thanks, truth--this is interesting to me because it links up the QSD period with the DJY period. Always appreciate your generosity in posting these.

ajk You're always welcome, ajk. @dyc King Young Ryu was Tang-friendly Here's the next batch of translations On January of 648, Li Shimin gave 30,000 troops to Xui Wanche for a 2nd Goguryeo invasion, which ended in failure. On 649, Li Shimin planned to engage in a 3rd Goguryeo invasion with 300,000 troops. However, he passed away on April of 649 after saying "Do not ever attack Goguryeo again." The war between Tang and Goguryeo stopped, but the Koreans continued to fight each other. On January of 655, Shilla lost 23 fortresses to Goguryeo and Baekje alliance, which led King Muyeol(Kim Choon Chu) of Shilla to ask Tang for their help. On February, Tang sent Cheng Mingzhen(the Governor of Yingzhou) and General Xiao Dingfang to engage in a 3rd Goguryeo invasion. However, they quickly retreated after losing to Goguryeo on May. On 658, Emperor Gaozong of Tang tried a 4th invasion by sending Cheng Mingzhen and General Xui Rengui, which also ended in failure. On November of 659, Tang sent Xui Rengui for a 5th invasion, but failed again. On June of 660, Xiao Dingfang invaded Baekje with 130,000 troops and Shilla army. King Uija of Baekje surrendered on July. Goguryeo conquered Chiljoong Fortress of Shilla while this was happening. Shilla-Tang alliance then moved on to Goguryeo. Xiao Dingfang moved north from Baekje to attack Pyongyang while Emperor Gaozong sent 44,000 soldiers to attack the Goguryeo's northern border. Fortunately for Goguryeo, Shilla-Tang alliance had to return to Baekje in order to fight the Baekje Revival Movement. Goguryeo used the opportunity to defeat the 44,000 Chinese on the north. On April of 661, Tang attacked and lost to Goguryeo again. YGSM sent General Nwae Eum Shin to attack Shilla's North Han Fortress after Tang's April invasion, but Goguryeo had to retreat due to the monsoon season. On August of 661, Xiao Dingfang led 100,000 troops across the Yellow Sea to invade Pyongyang, but retreated after losing again. On September, Emperor Gaozong sent army to attack Goguryeo's northern border. The Chinese retreated again after losing to Yeon Namseng(YGSM's first son). On January of 655, Tang sent Pang Xiaotai to attack Goguryeo's northern border again. Unfortunately, Pang Xiaotai's army was completely annihilated by YGSM. Pang Xiaotai and his 13 sons were all killed as well. Xiao Dingfang attacked Pyongyang at the same time, but his army had to retreat yet again due to a severe snowstorm. Goguryeo never lost a war up to this point, but everything started going downhill after YGSM passed away on 666 as YGSM's death resulted in a political struggle between YGSM's sons. Yeon Namseng took over the Great Prime Minister role when YGSM passed away. Namseng's two brothers, Yeon Namgun and Yeon Namsan were jealous of Namseng's power. When Yeon Namseng was patrolling the northern borders, Namgun and Namsan killed all of Namseng's close friends and took over the authority role. Yeon Namseng, who was at Guknae Fortress at the time, asked Tang for help. Emperor Gaozong sent Xui Biheli to rescue Yeon Namseng. Namseng then surrendered to Tang. In Goguryeo, Yeon Namgun became the Great Prime Minister. Emperor Gaozong sent Yeon Namseng, Li Ji, Xui Biheli, Hao Chujun, and Bai Anlu to invade Goguryeo again. Yeon Gaesomoon's younger brother Yeon Jeongto, who owned 12 southern fortresses, surrendered to Shilla along with his 12 fortresses. On September of 667, 16 fortresses including Shin, Namso, Mokjeo, Chang Ahm were conquered. 40 fortresses including Buyeo Fortress were conquered soon after. On September of 668, Pyongyang was finally conquered. King Bojang, Yeon Namgun, and Yeon Namsan were captured and taken to Chang An, the capital city of Tang. The remaining Goguryean soldiers continued to fight until they all died even after Bojang's surrendered. Tang established Andong Protectorate in former Goguryeo with Pyongyang as its capital and sent Bojang back to Pyongyang. On 670, Geom Mojam enthroned King Bojang's son Go Anseung as the new King of Goguryeo to start a Goguryeo Revival Movement. However, Go Anseung ran away to Shilla after killing Geom Mojam. On 671, Tang conquered Anshi Fortress, which was the only Goguryeo fortress that continued to resist after King Bojang surrendered(Yang Manchun may have died here). On May of 672, the Goguryeo Revival Movement surrendered to Shilla. On 677, King Bojang was appointed as the King of Chosun. Yodong(Liadong) was Chosun's capital. King Bojang planned a Goguryeo Revival Movement here. Sadly, Tang found about his plan and banished him to Yangzhou of China in 681. King Bojang passed away on 682. His tomb is located in Chang An, China.

Episode 49 Spoilers
Bidam is finally dead. He was actually dismembered to pieces after being captured in history, but he died fighting in the drama. Great death scene though. I think it might have been better if they made him cut his own head like Xiang Yu did. Bidam's character and fighting abilities resemble Lu Bu and Xiang Yu a lot. I'd say he resembles Xiang Yu more since he doesn't beg for his life like Lu Bu does.
Yeonhwa, whom I think resembles Diaochan, is also dead.

Boy, have I gotten behind on this one. Episode 49 Where did they get new Queen Jindeok from? The lovely young lady who attended to Bidam and committed suicide after his death was the daughter of Evil Queen, right? So where did the new queen come from? What do you mean new Queen Jindeok? She is the only Queen Jindeok and the daughter of evil queen is a fictional character who has nothing to do with Queen Jindeok.

I think I need to rephrase my question. Queen Seundeok is gone, right? So the new queen must be Jindeok, right? Where did she come from? The daughter of Seungman is the girl who just committed suicide, right?

The daughter of Seungman is the girl who just committed suicide, right? Yes, she is and she is just a fictional character. Queen Jindeok has been on the show for the last 3 weeks so she didnt just come out of nowhere.
