It's a shame there seems to be so little record of what seems to be the most politically tumultuous time in Korean history.

Question - which Shilla salon are these characters having their hair done at? The highlights, the red and blond dye jobs, so very --- chic.
Episode 1 - Chun Chu looks like he's borrowed King Gwanggaeto's eye liner.
What's with the eyes? The characters look like their eyes are big black discs. Kind of creepy in an x-files kind of way.
I'm not sure which is worse - the Manga-style hair and makeup in Iron Empress, or the swords and scorcery style get-ups and weapons in this one.

excelsior Every other records other than Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa were all lost during foreign invasions. There's more story with King Jinpyung's early reign, but I skipped that part cuz that was irrelevant to this drama. hapha Yes, it does have to do with succession. That story has no historical basis by the way. I just finished watching Ep3 and it looks like Kim Yushin is going to be in Battle of Kajam Fortress which he had nothing to do with in history. Annals of King Mu(?-641. R.600-641) I'm going to skip most of the events that were already covered on King Jinpyung story King Mu was an illegitimate son of King Wideok. His name was Jang. He became the king on May of 600 after the death of King Beop. He had great appearance, broad mind, and outstanding spirit. On July of 604, King Mu sent the Minister of the Left Wang Hyorin and Yeon Moonjin to Sui China to deliver the message that Baekje was willing to help Sui's invasion of Goguryeo. Goguryeo invaded Songsan Fortress right after they heard this news, but the invasion ended in failure. They then attacked Seokdu Fotress and captured 3,000 peasants. Baekje sent another messenger to Sui after this war for an invading alliance against Goguryeo. On April of 611, King Mu sent Kook Jimo to Sui to deliver another message on Baekje's willingness to help China against Goguryeo. On 612, Emperor Yang of Sui invaded Goguryeo with 1,130,000 troops. Baekje ignored their past promises and stayed out of the war. Sui lost and retreated after few months. Emperor Yang couldn't stand the humiliation and continued to attack Goguryeo for the next 3 years, which all failed. On July of 627, Baekje's General Sa Geol conquered two Shilla fotresses in Shilla's westernmost region and captured 300 Shillans. King Mu declared a total war on Shilla after this. King Jinpyung asked for Tang's help to prevent Baekje attack. King Mu sent his nephew Bokshin to pay tributes to China in order to be on Tang's good side. Emperor Taizong of Tang called all 3 messengers from Goguryeo, Baekje, Shilla and demanded them to stop fighting. King Mu promised that he will stop the war, but he broke the promise by attacking Shilla's Kajam Fortress on Feburary of 628. Baekje couldn't beat Shilla's resistance and retreated. On 629, King Mu sent a diplomat to Tang in order to gain China's trust again. On 630, the palace was repaired. On Janurary of 632, King Mu named his oldest son Uija as the Crown Prince. On February, the Macheon Fortress was repaired. On July, King Mu enjoyed hunting. On August of 633, Baekje conquered the Seogok Fortress in just 13 days. On 634, Wang Heung Temple was completed after 30 years of constrution that started during King Beop's rule. King Mu prayed in the temple very often. On March of 636, King Mu partied in the nothern port of Sabi River. King Mu got very drunk in this party. He played the Geomungo(Korean instrument), sang songs, and danced with his subjects. On May of 636, King Mu sent General Woo So to attack Doksan Fortress of Shilla. Woo So lost and got captured Shilla's Alcheon. On August of same year, King Mu partied again. On March of 638, King Mu partied with his concubines in the middle of a lake on the boat. On December of 637, King Mu sent an iron armor and an axe to Emperor Taizong as gifts. On October of 639, King Mu sent an iron armor and an axe to Emperor Taizong as gifts again. On 640, King Mu demanded the acceptance of his children to National School of Tang. On March of 641, King Mu passed away.

I think two characters overlap with IE characters.
Bi Hyung = Kim Chi Yang
Galmun King Gukban = Emperor Kyungjong
BTW, my translations are shortened versions and I also skipped many other parts.

So can anyone explain who these "wildmen" are? Surely not the Gayans?

No.
i see they are 2 sides : The blond guy's side is following Baekje and the black guy's (Bi Hyung ) side is associating with Yushin , i wonder if he's scheming something else.

Why's there a blond guy in Korea? Why? TIME PARADOX! Unless he's a FREAK OF NATURE amongst the Korean ethnic groups!

;D Maybe he's a left over from a hair coloring advert -- or one of the new -pop grups who color their hair???
By now we should all be aware that verry little is historically correct in the K-historicals - Truth can tell usw that and has -- I wonder why the producers or whoever think that a blond guy would be an asset to a K-drqma? sort of a folk legend maybe like the gray-eyed red-haired American Indians?

I can't imagine why any ethnic group in this part of Korea or this time period would look or dress like these characters. Someone must have dreamt them up to make things more "interesting", like the manga-girls in IE.
Heavens, no one could complain that there is not a rich enough historical record, legends, or dearth of fascinating real people in this era. With all the interrelated royality and the three kingdoms, the writers should be able to provide an entertaining enough story without throwing in cave men in fright wigs. Heck, the legends just about Yushin could probably take up entire epsodes.
Hoping the subs will magically make some sense out of it all.
The babe with the blond-streaked hair already gets my nomination for the Most Annoying Character Award for her uncalled-for mugging and snarling.

Hey, wasn't there an interview saying that they were going to make this close to history? Looks like they lied. At least the writer of QSD was honest
