Ep.53 (I've looked at this and looked at it, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around how to summarize it better. So I'm just going to leave it for now.)
The Councilor dies. His men want to follow his funeral despite their life-threatening injuries. Their leader scolds them for not holding their lives dear. San remembers the Councilor’s last words and is wracked with guilt over his death.
Dae-su investigates the murder by beating up some thugs, who claim they know nothing. Sir Hong stops him from stabbing the guy and says the gang that did it is in hiding, but they’ll “get” them.
San accuses the Norons, but Lord Jang strongly denies any involvement. San says he better not know anything, because otherwise his life is forfeit. Then he insults Lord Jang’s lack of control over the Norons, to get him to ferret out the guilty parties—which he does. Sir Choi knows who did it (Lord Jang’s sidekick Sir Min), and he warns Sir Min he’d better never let Lord Jang know or he’s toast. DS+2 follow certain Norons to investigate.
Hong Bin goes to see Queen Hyeoui, but she doesn’t seem to understand her error, upsetting Q-H. As she leaves, she faints. For this, Q-H gets chewed out by the ever-helpful Dowager Hye. As a reward for her truculent attitude toward Q-H, Hong Bin gets to see San more often and also she’ll get a fertility screen painted. She asks if an “acquaintance” from Dowahseo can do it for her.
Mr. Lee is being bled dry by his new “master,” who takes him to the gisaeng house--on Mr. Lee’s dime. Lee is broke; he tells Uncle, who suspects a con since Lee never saw the man paint.
The injured half-nobles, against medical advice, return to work. San goes to stop them, but they beg him to let them work.
Sir Hong sends D-S to kidnap Sir Min, and they put him into a bag and kick him a lot. Then Sir Hong tells him off. Then they beat him some more. Hong thinks this tactic will make Sir Min recheck all his steps, revealing them if he is followed. He says they’ll do the same to others later.
However, the minister of justice (a Noron) is kidnapped from his home and found dead the next morning with the figure “again” on his hand. Gossip says it’s in retaliation for the half-noble beatings. Lord Jang insults Sir Hong in the yard, implying that Hong is behind it. San also suspects Hong.
Hong Bin has asked for Song to do the screen. Hyeuoi, who keeps trying to do the right thing by Hong Bin and is bringing her herbs again (having-baby-herbs?), discovers that Song has been requested to paint the screen. She tells Song she’ll get her out of it, but Song says it’s her job and don’t make trouble for yourself. Hong Bin, however, insists that Song and Chobi do the screen in her quarters instead of at Dowahseo, and her attendant pitches a fit when Song says they really shouldn’t, so Song gives in.
Song and Mr Tak go in search of Mr Lee. They witness him being bodily tossed out by his wife and then going to the gisaeng house. Mr Tak, furious, informs on him to Chief Park, who goes to see Lee at the gisaeng house (where Lee is trying to make the other painter prove he painted the master painting Lee found). Lee is being kicked out of Dowahseo when the painter comes out and Chief Park recognizes him as “Sir Chang Yong”—an ex-Dowahseo man who drew the king’s portrait 4 times. He lies on the floor snoring while Chief Park explains his history to Tak, Song and Lee. The man suddenly wakes up and causes a fuss.
Another minister is murdered and found with “again” on his hand. The head guard thinks there’ll be serial murders of Noron ministers. Dae-su is put on the spot by Plus2, who want to know if Hong is behind it and what D-S knows. The gossip is, Hong’s behind it. Lord Jang comes in and accuses Hong of the murders, because he has proof that Hong hired thugs to beat up Sir Min in the first place.
Elsewhere, Hong admits to Sir Chae that he had Sir Min beaten, but denies involvement with murder. Well, who’s going to be stupid enough to believe that? Says Sir Chae. Hong then tells San, who has expressed disappointment in Hong, that he insists on being interrogated on the matter of the murders. He then tells Dae-su not to come forward in any circumstance.
When the old dowager hears about Hong’s predicament, she thinks he’ll be forced to accept her help.
San is very upset and can’t sleep. Dae-su is very upset too and goes to see San, but the king is at the prison asking Hong if he did it and why. Hong asks if San can possibly believe what he has to say.
At the next cabinet meeting, Lord Jang demands to know why San stopped the Hong interrogation. As to the beating, he’s obviously guilty, but as to murders, he’s innocent! says San. What criminal would confess without being interrogated? says Jang. I’ll show you the evidence! says San.

(I have decided to call the bastard sons of yangban “half-nobles” despite it making them sound like monetary units, because “half-blood” is so deeply offensive).
