Ep.13:
San scolds the police captain for ignoring a report of treason and not even investigating, and reveals he knows exactly where the encampment is. San learns from Dae-su that War Minister Han is the ringleader, but Eunuch Nam counsels they can’t arrest him until they have evidence. Dae-su thinks he can find the camp.
Jeong, planning to consult Minister Han, learns San showed up just as his men were about to kill Dae-su. He runs after the prince, telling him the error was his fault and he’s brought men to help out with the raid. Actually, Jeong plans to kill San if things don’t go his way.
At Uncle’s house, scribe Hong decides to go to Minister Han’s house to “make sure they didn’t throw out a body.” He’s teasing Uncle, who is worried about Dae-su. Hong goes to Han’s house, and there he sees Off Jeong’s assistant and recognizes him.
San arrives with his little army at the encampment. He splits them up to flank-attack as San goes up the center, then asks Jeong what he will do. Jeong says he’ll back up San. The raid fails; all militants have fled taking the weapons. Dae-su and San are stunned; Jeong cannot contain a smirk. San discovers a recently damped fire and a spear tip, and swears he won’t give up.
At Dowahseo, Sponsor Lee smarts off to Officer Tak on the strength of a promotion he expects for his report on Forger Cho. Head Painter learns of Song’s trespass in the map room. Song languishes in a shed, awaiting her fate. The painters are called into the yard to report who gave her the key.
At the palace, Yeong-jo worries over whether San will make the deadline. Elsewhere, San is greeted by Princess and given false good wishes. Jeong reports to Sir Choi and Princess where the army was moved, with Minister Han’s help.
Scribe Hong meets Jeong and tells him, I’ve found out I better not get on your bad side. He also says he has one more day to decide, so better be patient for now.
At Dowahseo, Cho-bi complains about Song and speculates about her and Mr. Lee, who were seen walking toward the map room together. She is scolded by Song’s friend. At the shed, Mr. Lee calls through the door to Song and begs her to take all the blame so he won’t lose his promotion. He hears someone coming and hides; it is the head painter. He tells Song he knows she was just trying to help the prince, so he won’t have her arrested. However, she may be fired. She should go home and await the verdict.
San, Nam and Sir Chae discuss Minister Han. San says they must make the enemy help them. They plan to force the men who attended the party with the supposed conspirators to testify to San. However, the men either pretend they are sick or refuse the message from San, fearing charges of treason. San needs another plan.
Dae-su begs scribe Hong to help him, but Hong says San is a lost cause. He refuses to help if there’s nothing in it for him. But San might get out of it, even so.
San passes a bridge repair and sees the artists of Dowahseo recording it. He remembers that every event has painters recording it along with details such as who is present. A party the king attended would be even more closely recorded. They go to Dowahseo, but are disappointed to learn their filing system is not quite up to snuff on such things. The head painter tells all the painters they have to look for their copy of this painting (because none of them remember doing it)—the original is at the local office where the party was held. Again, the painters complain that it’s too hard, but the head painter makes them look in spite of their moaning. He works at their side.
Song worries. Uncle worries. San remembers Yeong-jo’s threats and his own promises to the prisoners. Yeong-jo remembers San’s fear of him. Next morning, San learns the painters can’t find it, but they’ll keep looking, and that Yeong-jo has gone to the prison and ordered San there. Princess exults with the Queen. Choi praises Jeong.
San mournfully visits Dowahseo and thanks the chief painter for his efforts. At Song’s house, Sponsor Lee has brought her belongings and tells her what they were looking for. She tells him that particular painting was one she had copied on his behalf (big dummy). Song runs to Dowahseo.
At the police yard, the prisoners are being sentenced to beheading when San walks in, hands over the painting to Yeong-jo and explains the men are innocent because they all were at a party with Yeong-jo. Everyone is stunned, especially the king. Word spreads to scribe Hong’s office, where he overhears San’s two newly loyal guard friends discussing it and saying they are to meet San. He pulls a letter out of his sleeve and asks them to give it to San. (Apparently he banked on the off chance just a little.)
Yeong-jo stumbles around his desk, then refuses his breakfast. He stares at the painting. Elsewhere, all the conspirators are stunned. At San’s quarters, he tells Nam and Chae that they still must make Minister Han give them evidence against himself. His two guards come in and report they have kidnapped Minister Han’s steward. He asks the two to do “what I told you to do.” San plans to get Han to reveal the brain behind the whole conspiracy against San.
The steward is dropped off, bagged, gagged and tied up (but otherwise unharmed), in Minister Han’s front yard. When freed, the steward announces the jig is up, the kidnappers knew everything about Han. He gives Han a letter which upsets that worthy so much that he runs to Princess’s place. He gives her the letter; she appears nonplussed.
Nam and the guards are upset to report the minister’s visit to San, and they all go to her house. San is totally stunned to see Han’s chair outside Princess’s house.
