I think he should get his own thread because the real Dae Su was the closest thing Korea has to a Miyamoto Musashi or Yagyu Jubei . In so much as he was a peerless swordsman /martial artist and actually wrote several books on Martial Arts .
Sadly the drama seems to confine him to the ''unlucky in love "role and only every now and than do we get glimpses of the real Dae Su .
He should get his own drama ,Now there's a thought .

Wait, Dae su was a real person? I always assumed he was fictional. Just like how Chun-soo from Dong Yi turned out to be based on a actual person.
Where did you find this source of information?

Really, now, this is interesting. I didn't know he was a real person, either.
Guys, I know you all have seen this before so be a leeeetle careful about posting spoilers about D-S here. Right now (in the drama storyline), he's just a schmuck who pitches tantrums in order to resolve problems. However, it is clear that he must turn into a great warrior later, so I don't think what you've posted so far is a spoiler.

Yes he was a real person all i know about him is he was a famous Swordsman/Martial Artist I am having a memory block so i cannot recall exactly where i read it ,though im pretty sure at some point in the drama the voice over talks about him (This happens much later on ). He did live in Jeongjo's reign but i do not think he ever knew Jeongjo let alone be a member of the guards . He seems to have just been a famous martial artist of the era that the writers took the liberty of including in the storyline . Considering like his Japanese Peers he never actually achieved anything outside the martial world there is little info on him . I will search for more info but suffice to say the real Dae Su is miles removed from the one in this drama .So far (cant say more cause of spoilers )

Well if thats the case, then maybe I'll start working on a Dae-su historical fic, but I'm first going to need some more information about this guy, assuming I can find any

I will see what i can dig up .
There are two pivotal scenes ,rather two pivotal Dae Su scenes where we get a glance at the real deal and the voice over talks about who he really was . But the depiction of him in this drama is about 90% fiction.
You have to remember people like Dae Su and say Miyamoto Musashi have no interest to a historian because they never did anything of historical sigificance ,as such most of the story's come from acolytes and have a heavy bias .

Okay, good, so don't post what the scenes are until we get there, right? And I'll make a note of any "voiceover scenes" here in case you aren't watching at that time.
Get to work, sageuk.

I came across a dvd title on Korean traditional martial arts though I don't think they would talk much DS, much less bring up this person.
