MOD NOTE: I know I'm putting a lot of detail here, it just seems easier to write things as they happen (and a lot happens!), clean it up a bit and post it. Sorry for talking so much.
Ep.5:
San swordfights the assassin and wins, but before he can find out who sent the man, the guy swallows a poison and dies. San sees someone else in his house and chases him out; the guards can find no trace of that person. In a big too-do, the king is told there is no body in the house. There is no trace of blood or fighting. Yeong-jo is worried.
The king’s daughter returns from a trip to China; she is clearly a favorite of the king and his wife. She recounts stories of her adventures and repeats rumors that San is a madman.
San fires his six guards. He’s made a habit of this. Not satisfied with the new guards presented to him as candidates, whom he easily defeats in combat, he points out three servants and says, “Use them. Get three others from the street.” Also that it doesn’t matter who they hire, they’ll just be fired in a month. A guard opines the prince is truly mad.
At a tavern, Choi Seuk-ju (the mysterious man we’ve seen at all the court intrigue meetings) and Princess Hwa-wan (the king’s recently returned daughter). She is mixed up in the plots against San. She tells Sir Choi to talk Yeong-jo into “give San the job” the next day.
San is sitting alone thinking when he runs into a little girl who’s been sent to steal snacks from the royal kitchen; they hatch a plan together to catch the older girls who sent her. The eunuch who helped San when he was a boy asks him about his fights with the potential guards. They discuss the sit, and San gives him the poison pill that he had fetched out of the assassin’s mouth. They discuss Song and Dae-su, whom the eunuch has been unable to locate for over 9 years since they left. San wonders if they’re alive.
A wandering pigment seller is “recognized” by a customer; the peddler is Uncle with a beard. At a court meeting, Yeong-jo makes San face the court officers and asks him to say what they are thinking, because he needs to know what they’re thinking, just by looking, if he wants to be king. Yeongjo declares the ministers think San is insane, which they deny. He asks San to tell them his response. San says, I’m not. Yeongjo says, that’s good, so now you need to prove it to them. I’m giving you the job of receiving the envoys from China next month. He has to host them and try to get them to forgive Chosun for the debacle with the last bunch of envoys, as trade has been reduced because of it. Outside the court, San’s allies rejoice in this new chance and mention that the Noron faction made it possible. Sir Choi (conspirator), who seemed surprised by San’s new job at court, looks on.
San gets his forces around him and asks how preparations are going. They say a test of artists has been moved up in preparation. At Dowahseo (the art dept), a grown-up Song-yeon is revealed to be a damo in the art department, and she tries to help a candidate who is apparently hopeless. She later has to do a painting for the man who helped her get the job. A senior damo named Cho-bi is apparently the bane of Song-yeon’s life; Song learns Cho-bi will be entering the palace because of the envoys’ arrival. Song wishes she could go to the palace, but there’s apparently not much hope.
At a street fair, a big wrestler defeats all comers. Where’s his new opponent? Where’s Park Dae-su? Dae-su, grown-up, is running away. He is caught and dragged back, where he initially seems to be losing. But once he’s hit and kicked a few times, he joins in the fight and turns out to be quite good at it. Later, Uncle doctors his injuries and scolds him for not getting a steady job. They’ve been in town for a year, and Song is pretty much supporting them. Dae-su hangs out with toughs and sets up fighters for a fall. He blackmails Uncle into keeping his fight a secret.
Song overhears them and goes to make medicine for Dae-su. D discovers her wrist is injured (from the other guy’s painting), and yells at her for letting the painters take advantage of her. He is supposed to take the military exam, but is stalling by not studying the books. He thinks San has forgotten them, and she wants to keep their childhood promise even if San forgot. As Dae-su runs off (yelling at himself—clearly has a crush on her), Song reminisces about San telling her to call him by name. Unbeknownst to her, San is reminiscing about that, too.
Next day, the eunuch reports to San that the poison is pigment from Dowahseo. He wants to send a eunuch spy, but San says security is too tight there.
Song is painting away and realizes she’ll be late to work. Cho-bi is waiting; her punishment is to do a huge pile of laundry at an inconvenient creek. The dean of Dowahseo is parceling out assignments when they receive a visit from Prince San and his eunuch guard. Very excited. The damo crowd around, but of course, Song is out doing laundry and missing the grand visit. San seduces the painters with a royal banquet; the eunuch gets the guards from the pigment house, so another eunuch sneaks in. Meantime, San wows the dean and his assistant by his art scholarship.
At the creek, Song’s friend tells her about San’s visit. Song runs back to Dowahseo, but San has returned to the palace. She runs and almost catches up to the procession, but she either can’t go further or gives up in despair. She learns the prince gave the students a topic (which they failed to capture in their paintings). She looks at the topic and in response, paints her and San in the shed, where he gave her his sash. She’s caught painting by one of the painters, and dragged out by this priss and accused of stealing paper and paint (she was actually using trash they were throwing away). They’ll do an inventory and she’ll be responsible for anything missing. (Oh-oh.) She is thrown into a shed.
Dae-su tries to study but can’t settle into it. He takes a walk and sees someone sneaking off from a meeting with one of Dae-su’s thuggish buddies. The former then visits Sir Choi (conspirator), and assures him “his body will be found by the river tomorrow.” Sir Choi throws coins at the guy. Good job.
San receives a report from the eunuch that the man who stole the poison pigment has been found by the eunuch’s agent Han. San says to arrest the guy discreetly and he’ll meet him personally when he does the inspection for the envoy tributes. San thinks he’s finally found the people who conspired against him 9 years before and doesn’t intend to let this opportunity slip. Next morning, the eunuch waits for someone at a tavern. San goes down to the river, where he inspects stuff. The eunuch overhears there was a body found. He runs to report to San, who looks suitably alarmed.
