11/11/10 (final episode) SECOND HALF
Grand Chef recap Ep24
Tying up loose ends. After talking with Bong-ju, Joo-hee and Dad say goodbye. She tells him the split between her and B-J was because of them, not Dad, and to take good care of himself. She'll be fine working all the time. B-J and Sung-chan visit Matsumoto, to give him the shrimp dish, FINALLY prepared to his specs. Rapprochement all around.
“Why would you want to visit a lady’s house?” Jin-soo prepares for Sung-chan to visit her apartment, warming some food up, putting on makeup, etc. He comes in and gives her flowers, looking around at her place for the first time. One of the dishes is too salty, and they laugh, presumably remembering the incident with J-S's mom. Then they drink green tea made in an interesting little plastic tea-making device. He makes two joke proposals. Later, they discuss whether he’ll return to U-A-J, and S-C remembers that Mat told him (in a friendly way) to watch his back, he’s planning to return and challenge him again one day so he’d better keep up.
Bong-ju's plan. After thinking about Mat telling him that he (Mat) challenged the world’s preconceptions about sushi and won, B-J tells Joo-hee and Sung-chan that he’s decided to travel around and study the world and what he can do to spread the word about Korean cuisine. He’ll leave U-A-J in their capable hands, and Min-woo and Chef Choi will help them too. B-J says they should make the base for new jang together before he leaves.
Making the jang. Sung-chan, after calling Jin-soo to go on an expedition with him, runs into Joo-hee. He thanks her for making sure he and J-S didn’t lose each other. [She looks so sad.] Next scene, the U-A-J team prepares soybeans for jang as J-S takes photos for an article. Lots of cheesy stuff, cleaning jars, drying bean paste--looks like they’re having fun. Next, the boys visit their dad’s grave and (in their heads) tell him about their respective plans. S-C promises to bring his fiancée next time—“You know who it is.” Then they set up the jar for their father’s jang next to the ones for previous chefs, and make promises into the jar and hug each other and stuff.
Bye bye Bong-ju. Sung-chan and Joo-hee see him off at the airport. S-C asks if he should get lost; J-H demurs but B-J overrules her—“Yeah. Go.” S-C wanders off speaking in his foolish way. B-J apologizes to J-H and asks her if she’ll give him another chance, if she doesn’t find someone else by the time he returns. She pretty much says there won’t be anyone else. They chat happily as S-C looks on.
Elfin man predicts the future. Sung-chan visits the reprobate in the subway, where he’s torturing some guy who came to him for advice. S-C wants advice about his life; “It’s written on the road” says the old toot. So S-C tells Joo-hee that he’s taking off, too, to learn more from all the local chefs and cooks he’s met out there. She says fine, but only if he locally sources special ingredients for the restaurant, thereby forcing him to visit them.
Road trip. Sung-chan goes to visit Jin-soo, saying he’s starting his business again and is going to a shadfish festival. She claims that’s where she was going anyway, so they take off in his truck together. They find a roadside restaurant, but it’s dirty and dilapidated. They start to take off, but the owner [played by Jang-geum’s foster dad] comes out. J-S, to “rescue” the situation, asks where they can find a different restaurant. [Presumably she names one.] He says, it’s two hours away and closed, get your arse in here. They try his signature dish, which is fantastic. He overhears them discussing the ingredients and gets all paranoid, and he is vindicated when he finds them snooping in the kitchen. Then S-C roots around in the trash, grossing J-S out. He finds a nearly empty bottle of the secret sauce, but the owner comes out with a vicious dog which he sics on them. J-S runs to the truck with the dog in pursuit, but S-C keeps rooting around. He finds a good bottle of the stuff, but the owner grabs it and tosses it into the air (to break); S-C makes a mid-air catch.
