Grand Chef recap Ep16 – THIS IS A COMPLETE RECAP, DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW.
Previously on Grand Chef. Jin-soo’s boss finding the article, magazines spinning through a printing press, Director Jang calling Bong-joo to yell at him; Bong-joo flipping through the magazine…”Kim! Jin! Soo!” Joo-hee turning away the reporters, Chef Oh and pottery man discussing the blow-up, B-J standing on the bridge, remembering Sung-chan’s questions about Rockhead’s assertions about the contest.
Min-woo complains. Min-woo (Bong-joo’s sidekick) asks what’s up with everything. B-J asks him, did you tell anyone about throwing out the ingredients for the contest? “Of course not!” declares the liar Min-woo, who then slanders Sang-chan and Jin-soo. “What will you do?” he asks. B-J asks him to make his assistant take the blame (the one who keeps trying to help Min-woo; these guys are priceless). Min-woo asks about the rumor that S-C is grandson to the great royal chef and says he’s sorry he entered the contest at all.
Kitchen gossip. All the chefs and chef-lings discuss who will inherit. Chief Choi (the evil butcher) wonders, what will become of meeeeeee? Min-woo comes in and discusses with his hapless underling (the fall guy) the discussion they had in the yard of U-A-J when Min-woo was drunk (and Jin-soo overheard). AGAIN, they are overheard, this time by Joo-hee. (Look around once guys, maybe you’ll see someone listening.) Joo-hee announces a press conference to the kitchen, in the meantime, everyone should just calm down and work as usual.
Cut to the chicken. (LOL). In a meeting, Chef Oh asks Bong-joo, “what is all this about the chicken?” (As I mentioned before, I think it was actually pheasant. But chicken is definitely funnier. Do I know comedy? I know comedy.) B-J throws Min-woo’s assistant under the bus and everyone expresses relief that it wasn’t actually B-J—rather as if they knew it could be. Joo-hee looks a little doubtful about this explanation. Joo-hee’s father, the porcelain maker, starts shrieking about all the people they need to sue. (That guy needs therapy.) Chef Oh looks deeply upset, Joo-hee doubtful and Bong-joo somewhat shifty. Bong-joo goes into his office and tries to call Sang-chan, but S-C’s phone is unavailable.
Babes in the wood. Sang-chan and Jin-soo are making some kind of mulligan’s stew in the wild wild outdoors when J-S’s phone rings. It’s U-A-J—she refuses to pick up. Why? “I don’t like them. I know they cheated. I was even going to write about it…” They make more food, eat the food, discuss its wonderfulness, talk about getting some soju. And then her phone rings again. It’s J-S’s mom, who is out in her orchard picking peaches. Kind of hilarious emotional blackmail conversation, and Mom faints, then hangs up (!!!!). J-S gets excited and accidentally answers a call from her boss. She makes a bunch of excuses for not coming back there, but he tells her she’s been working too hard and needs a break. Take some time off. Put your feet up. She is puzzled but not overly suspicious and decides to go help her mom out. S-C offers first to take her to the train station, and then once they are on the way, offers to take her to her mom’s house.
Joo-hee is suspicious. J-H thinks about the conversation she overheard earlier between Min-woo and his sidekick, talking about whether Jin-soo overheard them “that day.” She goes to Bong-joo’s office to discuss their Napa Valley dinner, and she suggests they cancel it in favor of the beef supply contract. He refuses because he’s in a mania of advertising U-A-J at every opportunity. He rises to leave. She asks where he’s going, but he basically says “somewhere.” She asks if there is anything else she doesn’t know about. He says, “What kind of question is that?” Then tosses off, “Oh, yeah, let’s get engaged next month.” I guess Mr. Romantic crawled away sneering up his sleeve now that he’s got what he wants.
Braggadocio. Jin-soo’s boss crows on the phone about the success of the article about U-A-J. Jin-soo’s friend comes in, disgusted, accuses him of thievery and disavows her involvement. He shows her a full-time contract for Jin-soo. He says he did everything for Jin-soo’s sake, that he forced his boss to hire her full time. Jin-soo’s friend goes off somewhat appeased, and Mr. Boss looks sneaky as she leaves. (I love the way this guy pushes up his glasses with his middle finger. I know it’s not on purpose, but it’s like he’s saying F-U to everyone and everything—and he is.)
Coffee laddies. Bong-joo and Jin-soo’s boss meet over coffee. They spar over truth, lawsuits and general averments of mutual cussedness. B-J says he’ll clarify everything in a press conference. B-J: “I’ll give you this chance to clarify everything or else.” J-S’s Boss: “Thanks.” (Sarcastic? Yep.)
Innocents at sea. Sang-chan and Jin-soo drive up to her mother’s orchard. J-S goes to the house, but S-C digs around his truck for a gift for her mother. Mother arrives and thinks S-C is one of the workers she hired that had refused to show up. He mildly protests, but she overrides him. Move it move it move it! is her attitude, and she puts him to work in the orchard. Meantime, J-S has come into the house (inside, it’s a very pretty, simple Korean small home, BTW—but outdoors, it’s kind of stacked with lumber and stuff). She can’t find her mom. Mom is in the orchard, scolding S-C, not letting him get a word in edgewise. He asks if she’s Jin-soo’s mom, surprising her. J-S shows up, her mother scolds her for having a boyfriend and J-S scolds her mom for misunderstanding and making him work. S-C just laughs and says he’ll work. Then the danged fool falls off a ladder.
Fish shake. Mom puts a bunch of fish into a blender, adds broth, cuts up veg and cooks up a soup. She carefully reads off a recipe pinned to the cabinet. While reading the recipe, in a Lucy-move, she accidentally pours about half a cup of salt in (then adds the ½ teaspoon called for). Tastes it and notices nothing amiss.
Disappointment of Bong-joo. B-J arrives at Director Jang’s office. Jang informs him that he’s not in the food business for profit, he wants to spread Korean cuisine and culture. He says he may have made a mistake getting so involved with U-A-J at the expense of other options. He may cancel the Napa Valley dinner. Get lost, I’m mad at you, is the gist. (BTW, my translator uses “you” all the time in this conversation, as though Jang is talking about B-J, but really, he keeps saying Un Ahm Jung, so he’s obviously saying U-A-J was a waste of his time--not Bong-joo.) B-J is stunned, for some reason--the guy’s thick.
In the orchard. Jin-soo follows Sang-chan around, nagging him to leave. S-C talks about how nice the peaches are, how difficult they are to grow, get away from me and do some work yourself. J-S’s mom calls, dinner is ready. They are excited out of all proportion--really, these two are Disney characters. J-S’s mom is wearing a hat and has a cake; turns out she faked an “illness” to get J-S to come home for her birthday. The soup looks delicious, the cake is beautiful, they light the candles and sing Happy Birthday (Illegal--LOL) as J-S blows them out. Mom jokes that S-C has to hurry up and eat because he has to pick lots of peaches. Then she finds out S-C’s name, and it turns out that jinsoo sungchan means “feast”—ha ha everybody have a laugh. “We’re made for each other.” They taste the soup, and J-S says it’s the best ever, but S-C looks a little disturbed by it. Mom gives him some wild herbs/vegetables, and he really likes those. But every time he takes a bite of the soup, he looks….oh, sad. Pained. Afterward there is one of those embarrassing bathroom scenes. Jin-soo inside, S-C outside screaming to get in. The salt did its work.
Mom gets crushed. While Jin-soo and Sang-chan fight over the bathroom, J-S’s mom gives some soup to her neighbor. The neighbor lady, in the tradition of all Korean TV neighbor ladies, does not mince words. The soup is disgusting, there is too much salt. “I knew this would happen. You are a terrible cook.” Mom goes into her kitchen, dumps out the soup and tears down all the recipes she has pinned to the cupboard doors, crying.
Why Jin-soo likes salt. J-S and Sang-chan walk in the orchard, discussing the beautiful evening. J-S thanks him for pretending to like the stew. She tells him her mother has no sense of taste. Her taste buds were killed by chemotherapy for tongue cancer. (Nice of her neighbor to allow for that.) J-S’s mother doesn’t know that J-S knows about this, and J-S tells S-C, “I love my mother’s cooking. It’s the best.” Sweet. J-S tells S-C that her mother enjoys food by reading about it; that’s why she wants to be a food journalist. He gives her a clover bracelet he made for her birthday.
Joo-hee, private investigator. Joo-hee has a conversation with Min-woo’s fall-guy sidekick, saying Bong-joo told her all about the contest, and could the boy please tell her what happened. He says, “But you know all about it!” She recovers and says she doesn’t want to blame him, but wants to hear the story from his mouth. He takes all the blame, saying he thought Min-woo would lose. Joo-hee wonders aloud what Sang-chan could have misunderstood about this. The boy chokes on his coffee. She is puzzled by his reaction.
Mom is sad. Sang-chan comes into his room at Jin-soo’s house. J-S’s mom has made up a bed for him, and she’s left him some plum tea…she knew he had a stomachache. In the living room, J-S comes quietly to bed, but her mother is still awake. She tells J-S to drink the plum tea and asks if she wants medicine. J-S tells her mom they got sick because of something they ate elsewhere, but Mom insists on talking about it. Why did they eat it? She’s embarrassed, she can’t even cook for her daughter. J-S tells her she really enjoyed dinner. Mom talks about how sad she is not to be able to cook, how she didn’t value her taste when she had it, all very touching. J-S keeps insisting, my mom’s cooking is the best and hugs her while they cry.
Sung-chan, medicine man. S-C searches for herbs and mountain vegetables. He makes one of those really beautiful court dishes. Jin-soo tells him, you don’t have to make this, she won’t cook more for you, don’t be afraid. He keeps cooking, wondering if her mom likes hot spicy food. “My mom can’t taste it.” He tells her, you taste food with your heart. He sets a huge table; then they bring out Mom. S-C feeds her a bunch of stuff, and she appears to be able to taste it. She tells J-S, I can remember how it’s supposed to taste from the smell and the texture. S-C tells Mom she must be crying because the food is so very spicy. Happy crying this time. Next, S-C puts J-S on the bus to Seoul. She makes him promise to visit her there so she can buy him lunch, to thank him. They agree to meet, a week from today at noon. (Shades of An Affair to Remember? Same Time Next Year? Midnight Cowboy?)
The “Ess” hits the fan. Joo-hee supervises packing table settings, but the head hostess brings a paper “from America”—it is entitled, “Cancel your contract is known that.” (Yeah, it doesn’t really look like a fax or a letter or anything legal, the first few lines appear to be an article about restaurants in someplace called Newquay.) Bong-joo comes in and Joo-hee demands to know what’s up. He tells her about Jang and also says to stop packing up, and goes to his dad. They argue about whether B-J should call the press conference right away or wait until they find S-C and get an explanation. B-J wants to press forward because things are falling apart. He doesn’t care that they are not descendants of the Royal Chef, as he and his family are the ones who kept the restaurant and tradition going. His father concedes that point, but… B-J says he’ll do the press conference no matter what.
Sung-chan called in. Here’s dumdum getting into his truck. Here’s dumdum turning on his phone at last. Here’s dumdum’s phone ringing—it’s Dad. Come home, dumdum, come home. Dumdum drives home, all oblivious.
Calm before the storm. Jin-soo, on the bus, pulls out the clover bracelet from Sang-chan, remembering more of their conversation that night when he told her she was a chef for helping her mother with articles about food. Good times. In front of her in the next bus seat, a man opens a paper on the front of which is a photo of U-A-J—“Oh Bong-joo and Un Ahm Jung in Crisis.”
The boys have a blow-out. Cut to the crisis-ee—Bong-joo reads the same article. Joo-hee rushes in. Call the reporters, B-J demands. NOW. Meanwhile, Sang-chan drives in the front gate. Seeing reporters, he concludes there is a celebrity in house. In the garden, Joo-hee chases B-J, demanding they talk before the press conference. But S-C shows up and B-J attacks him. Chef Oh intervenes. They show the article to S-C, who is stunned. He says he knows nothing of it, but B-J says only “we three” knew the truth (I assume S-C, B-J and Min-woo). Ergo, S-C must have told Jin-soo. Chef Oh says it’s entirely his fault, and the royal chef’s descendant needs to inherit U-A-J. Understandably, B-J is stunned, and so is S-C. B-J argues. Chef Oh dismisses him to talk with S-C. B-J leaves but announces he will not accept this.
Jin-soo walks into a lion’s den. Here comes dumdum #2, happy, happy, walking into the jaws of reporters hungry to rip her apart over the U-A-J story. Poor dumdum #2. Girlfriend rushes her outta there.
Chef Oh finds out. Chef Oh asks if the story about Bong-joo cheating in the contest is true. Sang-chan refuses to say anything. Chef Oh concludes it must be true. S-C apologizes. Chef Oh regrets making his sons suffer and hopes “it” does not happen again. He exhorts S-C to take his rightful place as head of U-A-J.
Jin-soo stymied. J-S rushes into her boss’s office (his name is, BTW, Mr. Han). He’s hiding out, he won’t answer her calls. She is very very upset, especially when she finds out her friend participated.
Sung-chan goes to Jin-soo. S-C speeds down the highway. He pulls up to Jin-soo’s office, just as she is hailing a cab. S-C looks po’d. Freeze frame.
Previously on Grand Chef. Jin-soo’s boss finding the article, magazines spinning through a printing press, Director Jang calling Bong-joo to yell at him; Bong-joo flipping through the magazine…”Kim!
