Kim Seong-chan, aspiring chef, adopted by Chef Oh, has friends among the junior cookstaff who help him. (There's also an older woman, and an elderly man who may help him.) Oh Bong-ju, slightly older chef, son of Chef Oh (Oh Sook-soo) Min-woo, same chef cohort as Bong-ju, they're friends too, secretly and maliciously made sure Seong-chan wouldn't find his lost knives Kim So-yeon, woman (manager? assistant manager?), seemed very sympathetic to Bong-ju, but also encourages Seong-chan somewhat, although that may be professional rather than romantic. Bong-ju was jealous when So-yeon took SC for a drive (for work, although he didn't know that). Nam Sang-mi, woman, came for a meal for luck, before her exams but was turned away because the restaurant was closed to the public that day. She's the second woman, so we'll be seeing her again. Chef Oh Sook-soo has decided to retire and is holding a competition to find his successor. Bong-ju expected to be his father's heir to the restaurant. There's a photo of them here: www.hancinema.net/korean_drama_Gourmet.phpI tried but couldn't get it to copy in here.

I was surprised when Bong-ju said "Let's get married" to So-yeon. Then she said...uh, let's wait..., so their relationship is still a mystery to me. If they date, we haven't seen it. Maybe they don't have time to date.
So-yeon's father came to the restaurant, with special pottery dishes he'd made for the Grand Chef contest. He was one of the judges for the second contest. The old man (name?) deliberately broke Seong-chan's contest dish, and SC took the blame. Then he turned out to be the third judge, and his viewpoint was appreciated. He did confess to the other 2 judges that he was the one who broke the dish. Whew, it was looking very unfair on SC to be blamed again.
Sang-mi came back to the restaurant and ordered a huge meal, usually served to 2 people. She photographed all the dishes and told So-yeon that she's a reporter with her own column, then had to confess that it was an internet column and she isn't a professional. She ended up asking for a job there, doing anything, emptying trash, anything at all. Success, she got hired, then her grooming was criticized by a wait-person supervisor.
Min-woo urged Bong-ju to get his father to dump Seong-chan from the contest, but he didn't try.
We found out that Seong-chan was the grandson of an old friend of Chef Oh's. SC was taken in by Chef Oh at the age of 14, after his grandfather died. SC was apparently kind of a screw-up. Chef Oh said he wished that SC had started earlier to take cooking seriously.

Isn't the older chef (the hippie), being played by the actor that was the prime minister in Wang Guhn.? His choice of roles certainly run a wide range. Like this drama, but why must they have a goofy character: like the reporter.? She is smart and capable enough to record the competition, why hide her intelligence.

Which one is the "hippie", Master Chef Oh, with the ponytail? He looks familiar to me, but I don't remember from where. I think the reporter was goofy when she was introduced because she was nervous about her exam. Maybe she'll calm down as this goes on?

Well, that was a shocker, the fact that Chef Oh's family has been lying about their ancestor. They were not descended from the Emperor's chef. It's Seong-chan who is the descendant. It's a tough blow to the supposed heir Bong-ju. Wouldn't you think Chef Oh would tell SC? Oh, no, he has to be miserable and run away first. oy.

FYI, I'm about 13 minutes into Ep.4. What just happened is, Bong-ju overheard the old guys talking about making SC the chief because he's the descendant of the grand chef. The old man just took Bong-ju inside and is about to show him a box or a book or something. Also, the girl reporter (so very cute) has gotten her job at the restaurant, and two of the competitions are finished. I have to say, I feel sorry for Min-woo, even though he is kind of a jerk. I think he's an Eddie Haskell type, huh? Really capable--brilliant, apparently--but keeps doing bad stuff to people he thinks are weak or undeserving, such as SC. He seems to have been a little overbearing before, but I think the devil entered him when he kicked the knives into the bushes, that was when he lost his soul. I like the contrast between Bong-ju's girlfriend (the secretary) and the girl reporter. Smooth versus inept, sophisticated versus perky. I like those kind of contrasts. So far, I like this series very much. The story is fascinating, there's really good characterization, and I think the camera work is excellent, too. Fighting! Bo

Yes, I like the show. Don't you notice how everyone says "Figh-ting!" on the modern shows lately? Actually, I've been noticing it over the past couple of years. Sometimes in Korean, sometimes in Korglish. (That's my Korean version of Spanglish--there must be a better term lol...)
Does anyone have an idea of where this "fighting" thing came from?
