Well, I think that friends are always a good thing, Jolson.
And I'm sorry about all the cliff-hanging endings – I’m just reporting the episodes as they happen.
Only two more episodes left to go. Hope to have them done soon!
Love and Obsession – Episode 148
It’s been three months since their breakup, and Taeyun and Hongryeon are hesitantly meeting each other again for the first time. “What are you doing here?” a genuinely perplexed Taeyun asks.
“Janghwa was in trouble,” Hongryeon answers, with her eyes looking down towards the ground as she speaks. “She called me. I was with her when she gave birth.”
“It’s been so long . . . “ Taeyun says. He looks towards Hongryeon, but she quickly turns her head to avoid eye contact. “They asked for a guarantor for the baby to see the mother,” he continues, “so I came.”
”That’s good,” Hongryeon replies. “Everything will work out, if you’re the guarantor. I was on my way to tell her that she can see her baby now.”
*****
Hongryeon returns to give Janghwa the good news. But, she’s sleeping, so Hongryeon asks the restaurant owner to tell Janghwa that she can see her baby, just as soon as she wakes up. And, as she’s leaving, the owner asks Hongryeon, “How are you related? Are you sisters?”
Hongryeon looks back, gently smiles, and tells her, “We’re friends.” And Hongryeon walks out the door without a further word.
*****
Park Seokdu and his gangster buddy are hurriedly packing. The Mob Boss’s people are everywhere, and they have to keep moving. But, Seokdu asks his friend to wait outside, while he writes a letter.
It’s a letter to Gilran.
*****
Taeyun and Hongryeon meet again, this time at the hospital, and the conversation (again) appears uncomfortable for both parties. “You’re training overseas?” Taeyun asks her. “Congratulations.”
Hongryeon doesn’t directly reply. Instead, she responds: “You’re quitting your work?”
“I’m too exhausted to do anything with passion,” he replies.
“This is a little embarrassing,” Hongryeon continues, “but I liked you when I was in high school.”
Taeyun uncomfortably chuckles, and then says “A teenage girl liked me secretly. That’s romantic.”
“The moment I fell for you wasn’t so romantic,” Hongryeon confesses. “You broke your CDs the day your program had a fault. You broke a whole box of them.”
“How do you know that?” Taeyun responds, genuinely amazed that she’d know of such a thing.
Hongryeon sheepishly grins. “I was at school late. I thought you were a thief.”
Taeyun chuckles again, seeming to be just a bit embarrassed. “I can’t believe you saw that. I was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Why did you think of that?”
“You said you would never develop a program again. But, you didn’t give up, and you came this far. That awful moment was just a process, because you didn’t give up. It’s beautiful to go through a difficult process to gain fruits. Seeing you like that was touching.”
Hongryeon - without knowing anything – had almost perfectly rephrased the same words Taeyun’s mother had left him. And, though Taeyun didn’t say anything, her words seemed to leave an impression on him.
[And, with just two episodes remaining, how interesting to finally learn that Hongryeon has had feelings for Taeyun all along – even back when they were high school classmates!].

An alarm goes off in the hospital incubator room, and the nurses rush to summon doctors. Something’s gone terribly wrong with Janghwa’s baby, and the doctor quickly attaches a ventilator.
The baby, they determine, has a heart defect. They should operate, but the baby is too small, and he probably wouldn’t survive the operation. “The baby was born too early,” the doctor informs Taeyun and Hongryeon. “There was a low chance of survival. I’ve done everything I can. I’m sorry.”
Taeyun – the baby’s legal guardian – has the authority to authorize an operation (no matter how risky) so he begins the legal procedures.
*****
Suchan’s sister is happily making dinner for him (one of his last authentic Korean dinners, before he heads overseas with Hongryeon) when Mary comes rushing in with the news that Janghwa’s given birth.
“Wasn’t she living with Taeyun?” sister asks.
“They haven’t been together since the funeral. They didn’t even call. Rumors just spread because Janghwa disappeared.”
Suchan and his sister are genuinely stunned. All this time, they’d thought that Taeyun had been secretly caring for Janghwa. “What’s more shocking,” Mary continues, “is that the baby is dying, and that Mr. Kang and Hongryeon are trying to save it.”
Suchan leaves the room, and picks up the airplane tickets he’s recently bought – the ones for himself and Hongryeon, for overseas training. Holding the tickets, he looks up at the ceiling, and sighs.
*****
Taeyun receives the legal approval for surgery. “It’s too bad the mother didn’t see the baby,” the doctor tells him.
But, while this is happening, Hongryeon is in the incubator room, looking at Janghwa’s baby though a glass window. “Many people said to me that ‘it wasn’t meant to be,’” Hongryeon thinks to herself. “They told me we weren’t meant to be, and to give up.”
”I gave up,” she continues to herself, “but that baby could be different.”
And Hongryeon – having made her decision – rushes outside to speak with Taeyun. “Let’s trust the baby,” she tells him. “He came into the world with much difficulty. He’s hanging on to live. He could die on the operation table. Let’s trust the baby with all our hearts. If we trust the baby to live, and he hangs in, he could beat his destiny.”
Taeyun considers Hongryeon’s feelings, and he decides to follow her advice. “Okay,” he tells her, “let’s trust the baby. He’s a small and weak baby, but let’s believe he’ll beat his destiny.”
And the operation is called off.
*****
Janghwa is still weak and bleeding, but she just won’t stay home any longer. She departs the restaurant owner’s home, and starts heading for the hospital – collapsing in the street on the way. “My baby, wait for me. I’m coming,” she says. “Dear God, I’m sorry. Forgive me, and save my baby!”
And, back at the hospital, the smiling doctor comes rushing to Taeyun and Hongryeon. The baby has, amazingly, shown remarkable improvement, and he’s no longer in any danger.
*****
Aunt, for the first time, learns that Taeyun has gone to attend to Janghwa . . . and she’s furious. “He’s closing the vaccine center,” she hollers at Janghwa’s parents. “Do you know what that means? He’s tired of life, and he has no will to go on. Whose fault is that?”
Aunt answers her own question. “It’s all because he met the wrong woman! I’m so mad!”
Aunt is still fuming when she returns home, and she has a few tense words with Janghwa’s friend Sara (the beauty shop manager). “I don’t know what’s going on,” Sara tells her, “but we can be comforted that Hongryeon and Mr. Kang are there.”
“I didn’t think Mr. Kang wanted to start over,” Sara continues. “But, if he’s with Hongryeon, don’t you think he could gain some hope?”
Hard-headed Aunt doesn’t say anything – but it does seem as if Sara’s words had an impact on her.
*****
Taeyun and Hongryeon – again – meet outside the hospital. And Taeyun has been pondering Hongryeon’s words. “Even if it wasn’t meant to be,” Taeyun asks her, “can it come true, if we really want it?”
“It did today,” Hongryeon replies, “didn’t it?” But, even now, Hongryeon still isn’t able to look Taeyun in the eyes when she speaks. And Hongryeon gets up, enters a waiting taxi, and heads back home to the Dragon House . . . alone.
