Hong Ryeon's life
She takes Gil-ran to her martial arts academy (and Ms. B is along to work out along with her). He apologizes to the head of the academy for being behind on the payments but promises to catch up. He warns her that it's a business, but she talks him into giving her a month's grace. Then she gets a call on her cell phone about there being a tent bar "without an owner" (manager?) that she can take over apparently without putting down any money. This seems like salvation for her.
Meanwhile, though, Su-ok comes by the Dragon House to rant at Hong Ryeon about how bad she is, getting money and seducing men. Park Gong-mi is there and takes the brunt of this. She charges that HR has seduced her brother and made him crazy, or why else would he be getting her a tent bar, and at length she totally just steals Gil-ran's school knapsack and takes it away to hold it hostage!
Su-chan gets home and is enraged at Su-ok for rifling his files, but she brings him up short with her accusation that he is interested in the woman who killed their father. "Did you have parents? Are you my brother?" He can't think of anything to say to her. Meanwhile, HR comes home and Gong-mi tells her what has gone on. HR tells Gil-ran that she'll buy her new books and a new bag! She tells Gong-mi about how racked with guilt she has continually been about the accident - she can't bring herself to ask anything from Su-ok.
However, Ms. B. then tells HR an inspirational little story about a dog she and her dad had named Jjong who protected her puppy from a fire, and how this is real maternal love. This inspires HR, anyway. She goes out and confronts Su-chan (we get a good on-location shot of his warehouse and trucking business) and asks him point-blank if he is interested in her, considering the bus ticket business and the tent bar business. Exasperated, he completely lies and denies it brusquely, telling her that "I don't even like you" and "I'm going to marry a fine woman, not a single mom." Good, says HR, let's not talk any more, and don't let your sister misunderstand things, and her next stop is to talk to Su-ok. "Do you have the right to talk to me?" Su-ok demands, but HR says that "I'm here not as Hong Ryeon but as Gil-ran's mom" and that she should leave Gil-ran alone in the future, and she snags back the bag, leaving Su-ok somewhat nonplussed.
That evening, Ms. B., who somehow seems to vaguely understand all this on some level, tells HR that she has a fine smart baby, and when HR cries, wondering what the future will bring, Ms. B. comforts her as if she is her baby, telling her everything will be all right.
Jang-hwa's life
I will mention here that while the main action is going on, Jeong-hae goes and visits YJH's health club, using her ID and having made herself up as her, in the search of eligible men. She finds some nice eye candy but they seem to all have wives or girlfriends (who are actually on hand). "Can't there be a virus to kill all the women?" she muses. Then Maeng Hyeongkyu carelessly bumps into her and she recognizes him as the guy she met in the singles' bar a week ago. (That's all for this side plot for now.)
But back in the main plot, the shady pawnbroker whom Tae-yun dug up in the last episode tells KTY that he doesn't remember who sold him Ms. B's jewels right then but if he gets some time then he probably will. KTY leaves him the first installment of the bribe, and when he's gone he immediately gets on the phone to corral the hoodlum in question, promising him some of the money. Meanwhile KTY has filled YJH in on things, and she turns to Im Hyeok for help. She knows he was in prison - though he says he's leading a straight life now - and she orders him to put some of his gang connections on the case and find out what they can about Ms. B. and the jewels. Hyeok promises that this guy Hong-su can find anything.
Hong-su is apparently able to find the fence anyway, because as the fence and the hoodlum are discussing things, in come a new set of gangsters who want their cut of the reward. The hoodlum of course doesn't want to admit to kidnapping and robbery, but the gangsters are insistent - "it's a tough economy" and they need the money. However, the hoodlum comes up with a plan. So when KTY goes BACK to Ulsan - wasting another whole day, I guess - a guy who is either the hoodlum's father or is posing as him tells KTY a tale about how the old woman had been down at the beach and apparently had leapt into the sea from a popular suicide location, leaving her jewels behind. They have some souvenir of Ms. B. that further identifies her, some flowery thing that must have been left in the car. KTY believes the story, and Hyeok believes it too when his sources report it back to him and he tells YJH about it. She seems a bit shaken by the finality of it all, and when KTY comes back to the house, distraught, blubbering, and holding the flowery thing to his face, she seems to shed a few tears of compassion or remorse. A rare occurrence.
